Questions for Adults • We live in a dangerous, sin cursed world. God is acting to rescue us through the mission of Jesus Christ. How do you feel about Jesus, that he would leave the glory of heaven behind and enter this dangerous world to rescue you? How should we respond to Jesus' rescue mission? • Read 1 Corinthians 15:26. Death is identified as an enemy. How can you relate to this description? What encouragement do you find in the statement that death will be destroyed? • Pastor John mentioned that Christians responded differently from their neighbors during the Cyprian Plague of 250-270 AD. How can Christians respond to the Corona virus pandemic day to love and serve our neighbors? Questions for Families with Students and Youth I want you to imagine with me that you are living in the Star Wars universe prior to Episode IV, A New Hope. The Empire’s reach knows no limitations. The universe is in turmoil and despair. The galaxy is hopeless. This is the world in which Princess Leia records a message in which she asks for help from an old Jedi (you know the line from the movie), “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.” • What about our world today? What are some things that make it seem that we are without hope? (think about top news stories) • The world is a mess, we are human beings full of sin and capable of hurting others. • However, Paul reminds us that we have something that has given us a hope greater than the sin and despair of this world we live in…what is it? hint- we just celebrated it (resurrection) Read 1 Corinthians 15: 30-33 in The Message Bible 30-33 And why do you think I keep risking my neck in this dangerous work? I look death in the face practically every day I live. Do you think I’d do this if I wasn’t convinced of your resurrection and mine as guaranteed by the resurrected Messiah Jesus? Do you think I was just trying to act heroic when I fought the wild beasts at Ephesus, hoping it wouldn’t be the end of me? Not on your life! It’s resurrection, resurrection, always resurrection, that undergirds what I do and say, the way I live. If there’s no resurrection, “We eat, we drink, the next day we die,” and that’s all there is to it. But don’t fool yourselves. Don’t let yourselves be poisoned by this anti-resurrection loose talk. “Bad company ruins good manners.” • What do you think are some of the dangerous things Paul faced as he went around speaking about having a relationship with Jesus? (death, imprisonment, beatings, plots against his life, and persecution) • Wow! Do you experience any of those things for Jesus? • Even if Paul had some fear about these things it didn’t stop him from talking about Jesus and serving people in Jesus’ name. What made it possible for him to do so? (resurrection power) • Why does the resurrection make Paul’s life different? (guarantees our hope in heaven, something great than this life) What about ours? • What does it empower him and us to be able to do? (change his life, his witness, his fears, etc) • Share one thing that you are finding hard to trust God with (what are you anxious and fearful about)? • How can the power of resurrection hope help you to trust God this week? • Find a way to sue that resurrection power to serve another person this week. Prayer you can use together: Yesterday I was Crucified with Him; today I am glorified with Him. Yesterday I died with Him; today I am made alive in Him. Yesterday, I was buried with Him, today I am raised up with Him. Let us offer ourselves to Him who suffered and rose again for us. Let us become divine for His sake, since for us He became human. Amen Excerpt from the Easter Oration of St. Gregory the Theologian Want to Dig Deeper? Imagine our country being attacked on our own soil. The invading military wipes out all forms of communication. Our military forces strategize together and strike hard against this enemy. After a long, difficult battle, our military wins the war. Communication has not yet been reestablished. You are assigned to an elite team of messengers that spreads the word that we are no longer slaves and captives of our enemy. Do you go out embarrassed, quietly muttering about victory and freedom? No, you proclaim it! • What is one way this week you can do the same with the hope and freedom we find in Jesus? (Remember, it is our joyous task to proclaim) Questions for Families with Children • The apostle, Paul, is the writer of the book of 1 Corinthians. Reread 1 Corinthians 15:22 in your children’s Bible. Who is Paul talking about when he says “Adam”? • What happened to Adam and Eve in the Garden? Why was it bad that they ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil? (Because God told them not to and they weren’t following His commands) • What is it called when you do something that God doesn’t want you to do? (sin) Is everyone sinful? • Why did we celebrate Easter last Sunday? (to celebrate Jesus' resurrection; if your child is younger, use this word and talk about what it means) Jesus was blameless and without sin, so whose sin did Jesus defeat by dying on the cross? (ours) • What is the gift we can receive if we follow Jesus? (eternal life) What are some things you can do to keep sin from taking over your life? (follow God's commands, pray/talk with God, etc.) • Challenge: Here's a fun activity for your family to do to help reinforce the good news of the Gospel and our wonderful gift of eternal life. The only materials you'll need are Playdoh, a wire or plastic hanger, a hammer, a bag of candy, a ruler, and a small wrapped gift. • Eternal Life Scavenger Hunt https://www.kidssundayschool.com/gradeschool/activities/eternal-life-scavenger-hunt.
