OPENING KEYNOTE PRESENTER 0810-0845 Rail’s Role in Accessing the Market

Keynote Speaker: Keith Chiasson Executive Vice President Downstream, Cenovus Energy Inc.

The number one issue facing Canadian heavy oil producers remains lack of adequate takeaway capacity for the sector’s growing oil production. This is impacting cash flow not just for producers but also for provincial and federal governments and is hurting the Canadian economy. While building new pipelines is the key solution to this problem, rail also has a role to play, even in times when pipeline capacity is at sufficient levels. Keith Chiasson, Cenovus Energy’s Executive Vice-President of Downstream, will talk about the benefits of moving oil by rail, as well as how we can overcome some of the challenges that created the market access problem. After over 12 years of orderly development, the Enhanced JetShear™ (EJS) partial upgrading technology, is ready for deployment at commercial scale. The technology dramatically reduces the viscosity of bitumen resulting in a reduction of approximately 50 vol% of diluent required to meet pipeline specifications and 100% of diluent for rail applications. PRESENTATION 3 Impacts of the IMO Sulphur Regulation on the Canadian Crude Oil Market

Dinara Millington, Canadian Energy Research Institute

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is enacting a regulation to limit sulphur in bunker fuel to 0.5% by 2020. This more stringent regulation restricting emissions from ships plying international waters could significantly change the crude oil landscape at regional and global levels. CERI’s study 175 analyzed the impact of the IMO standard on demand for and price of produced in Canada. This presentation will cover the findings of that research. More specifically, it will address how will the changes in the bunker market affect crude oil differentials and valuations and what volumes of Canadian heavy production will be affected by the IMO spec change in 2020.

1500-1700 SESSION 4: PROJECT UPDATES AND FIELD DEMONSTRATION PILOTS

Session Chairpersons: Sara Lagos, Devon Energy David Vu, CNOOC International Farid Ahmadloo, Canadian Natural Resources Limited

PRESENTATION 1 Operational Updates and Development Trends

Jared Wynveen, McDaniel & Associates Consultants

SAGD performance and recovery has improved drastically over the past decade as a result of new technologies, making it a more competitive Canadian resource. This presentation will cover the most recent development trends in the SAGD world including a broad overview of current producing projects, as well as key technologies that have become game changers in industry. Topics of discussion include: infill wells, non-condensable gas injection, flow control devices, and extended reach horizontal wells. Other project updates pertaining to significant operational progress will also be discussed.

PRESENTATION 2 Devon Manatokan East Post-CHOPS Methane & Propane CSI Pilot Results

Mark Anderson, Devon Canada

This talk will review the design, operation, and performance results of a methane and propane cyclic solvent injection scheme operated by Devon in a post-CHOPS reservoir located near Bonnyville Alberta. Lab testing was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of and screen various solvents to reinvigorate post-CHOPS wells in the Colony heavy oil formation. Field testing was used to confirm reservoir containment and reservoir properties prior to the pilot. A number of simulation studies were used to predict and later history-match the performance of the CSI scheme using a 3D geostatistical model. The field pilot operated for approximately one year with active cycling and another year of blowdown. All injection and production streams were monitored and sampled, as well as some downhole measurement to observe the scheme performance. Injected fluid composition and operating pressure were modified during the pilot to evaluate different operating conditions. Rapid 1 month cycling with methane & propane CSI was effective in returning two depleted CHOPS wells to their previous peak CHOPS oil rates and confirmed multiple recovery mechanisms are at play including re-establishing foamy oil drive, viscosity reduction, and pressure drive. Water and sand production rates were significantly altered during cycles compared to base CHOPS production. There was a 50% improvement in oil recovery after one year of cycling and one year of blowdown. SPE/CHOA Slugging it Out Conference
