The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath.

    Western Europe GREAT BRITAIN q PERIOD from July 1, 1954, through June 30, 1955, was an eventful one JL in Great Britain. It saw the dissolution of Parliament, accompanied by the retirement of Sir Winston Churchill and his replacement as prime min- ister by Sir Anthony Eden. Matters of special concern to British Jews were, internationally, Great Britain's relations with the Arab states, the trials of Rumanian Zionists, and the rearmament of Germany. On the domestic front, British Jewry combatted a parliamentary campaign against Shechita, the Jewish method of slaughter. In the general election of May 1955 the Conservative party increased its majority from seventeen to sixty. It polled 906,000 votes more than Labor, obtaining successes even in Lancashire where foreign competition in the textile industry was causing considerable anxiety. Of the seventeen Com- munist candidates, none were elected; fifteen lost their deposits by not se- curing one-eighth of the total votes cast in the constituencies in which they ran. Of the fifty-six Jewish candidates, thirty-nine were Labor, ten Conserva- tive, five Liberal, and two Communist. All the sixteen Jewish members in the last House of Commons were re-elected. There were now seventeen Jewish Labor members and one Conservative. The government had two Jewish members, both in the House of Lords—the Marquess of Reading, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Lord Mancroft, Undersecretary at the Home Office. The only anti-Jewish incident during the election was the painting of some slogans on walls in the Aston Division of Birmingham where there was a Jewish candidate, Julius Silverman.

As news of Nazi horrors passed unfiltered over the English Channel in real time, Britain’s Jews lived behind Allied lines, powerless to stop the atrocities unfolding on the Continent. Anglo-Jewry was precariously perched on the edge of Nazi-controlled Europe, witnessing the Holocaust as bystanders trapped between awareness and helplessness. This proximity brought urgency, compelling Britain’s Zionists to face the reality of the extermination of European Jewry, while this distance created the physical and intellectual space for Nazism and the Holocaust to be considered at an ideological level.

GREAT BRITAIN By JOSEPH LEFTWICH1 Twelve months ago Anglo-Jewry was celebrating the overthrow of Hitlerism and holding thanksgiving services. During the war the Chief Rabbi had each year asked for prayers for "release from terror and oppression to our har- assed brethren and a victorious peace to the Forces of Free- dom." Now in his thanksgiving prayer the Chief Rabbi reminded us that if England had not stood firm when she stood alone against Hitler we should now be "travelling in death-trains to one or other of the slaughter-camps. "Great indeed," he said, "should be our joy that God has preserved us." "For years every week's Jewish Chronicle read like Foxe's Book of Martyrs," the Jewish Chronicle recalled. The Board of Deputies of British Jews turned its meeting into a thanksgiving meeting, and the ordinary business was sus- pended. Professor Selig Brodetsky, the President, said that it was a great deliverance from one of the most serious at- tacks ever made on humanity. Then came the arrests of Streicher, Ley, Rosenberg, Goering, Frank and other leaders of the German anti-Jewish murder policy, the trial and execution of the Beast of Belsen, the arrest and execution of James Joyce, John Amery and other British collaborators of the Nazis, and the Nuremberg trials, in the course of which Ley committed suicide leaving a note recanting his anti-Semitism, a recantation in which he was followed by Rosenberg and Frank ("A thousand years will pass and this guilt on Germany will still not be erased," said Frank.

    Tittle-tattle Tom Easton Friends of ‘the Friends’ in the North Watching the coverage of the Scottish referendum campaign from south of the Border made me wonder if this is what it must have felt like during the EEC vote in 1975 – the privately- owned media majority marching in one direction alongside the BBC and the big noises of politics, capital and the state. In this case it wasn’t fearful warnings about ‘missing the European boat’, but other terrors – including more real terrorism to come, according to Lord Robertson of Port Ellen – if the Scots voted to let go of nanny London and inch towards the removal of Trident from Holy Loch.1 The ex-NATO Secretary General, UK Defence Secretary and founding figure of the British American Project (Lobsters passim) chose to issue his warning to referendum voters not from his home country, but just down the road from the offices of the William Cohen Group in Washington DC where he works as ‘senior counsellor’ to the weapons and security consultants. Cohen was Robertson’s opposite number at the Pentagon during the Clinton administration.2 Reporting on the referendum for the BBC from Glasgow was Sarah Smith, the former Channel 4 News Washington correspondent, who is the sister-in-law of Robertson’s son Malcolm.
