Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major op 61 Although Beethoven completed only one concerto for violin, he certainly began work on another. All that survives of the earlier attempt is the opening section of a first movement in C major, but the condition of manuscript is such that it is entirely possible that the rest once existed, but has since been lost. The fragment probably dates from the early 1790s and reveals a confident treatment of the soloist, and a penchant for the upper reaches of the instrument’s range that anticipates one of the notable features of the masterpiece that was to follow more than a decade later. The exact circumstances of the D major Concerto’s commissioning are not known, but it was evidently written for Franz Clement, a very distinguished Viennese conductor (notably at the Theater an der Wien) and violinist. -

Recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and Gilmore Young Artist Award, Albright won the Ruhr Klavier Festival Young Artist Award presented by Marc-André Hamelin (Germany) and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In addition to performing, Albright is sought after as a speaker, masterclass instructor, teacher, and competition judge. Performing Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 13 and Schubert’s Quartet in D minor, D.810 Death and the Maiden, the Emerson Quartet will perform these works in which the Quartet has received rave reviews for its New York performances this past spring. The evening’s honorees are Mollie and John Byrnes. Concert Only Tickets are $95. On Saturday, June 7 at 8 pm, violinist Stefan Jackiw and pianist Anna Polonsky perform Mozart’s Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 454, Lutoslawski’s Partita for violin and piano, Saariaho’s Nocturne (in Memory of Lutoslawski) and Brahms’s Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108. Jackiw is hailed by the Washington Post as “talent that’s off the scale” and Polonsky was a recipient of the 2003 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and the 2011 Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. We are writing to ask the Council to make authorization of buoy gear a high priority and initiate this process early in 2016, so that West Coast fishermen can start fishing with buoy gear as soon as possible. As an organization that works to create a more knowledgeable constituency for ocean conservation and assesses the sustainability of seafood species, we are always thrilled to hear of innovative ideas that could improve the way we fish. This is why we are so excited about deep-set buoy gear. We believe that buoy gear is a viable alternative to the currently used drift gillnets in the U.S. West Coast swordfish fishery, and could help make the fishery more sustainable. Experiments conducted with buoy gear off the West Coast have found that this fishing method catches high numbers of marketable swordfish and minimal amounts of non-target species, like sea turtles, whales, and bluefin tuna. This fishing method also results in a higher quality swordfish product, similar to harpoon-caught swordfish; this means fishermen get a higher price for their catch and consumers get a tastier product. -
