Brasov’s historic coat of arms is a royal crown placed on the cut trunk of amountain oak (sessile) extended in 13 strong roots. Ever since the Middle Ages, throughout Europe, the oak symbolizes solidity, strength, longevity and height, both in the spiritual and in the material sense. It has always and everywhere represented both moral and physical strength. Also, through its crown, the oak is a symbol of hospitality and it represented the equivalent of a temple in the European art. It is the oak that the people of Brasov have chosen in 2015 as a symbol to define the past, present and near future of the city they inhabit. 3 Introduction – General considerations Brasov has chosen to grow through culture! • Romania - Adopted on 22 June 2017 Published on 16 February 2018
ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE FRAMEWORK CONVENTION FOR THE PROTECTION OF NATIONAL MINORITIES ACFC/OP/IV(2017)005 Fourth Opinion on Romania - adopted on 22 June 2017 Published on 16 February 2018 Summary The authorities in Romania promote respect and understanding in society and representatives of most national minorities report an overall embracing attitude prevailing between the majority and the minorities. The authorities have made efforts to promote minority cultures and education, and particular steps which have been taken to facilitate representation of national minorities in parliament are widely recognised and appreciated. The Law on Education remains the main legislative basis for teaching in and of national minority languages. A consolidated and coherent legal framework related to the protection of minority rights is lacking and the draft Law on the Status of National Minorities, proposed in parliament in 2006, has still not been adopted. Existing legislation regulating different aspects of national minority protection is disjointed, piecemeal, full of grey zones and open to contradictory interpretation. A coherent policy to guarantee access to minority rights is still lacking and respect of rights of persons belonging to national minorities varies according to local conditions and the goodwill of the municipal or regional authorities. Persistence of negative attitudes and prejudice against the Roma and anti-Hungarian sentiment is of considerable concern. Despite the resolute stance of the National Council for Combating Discrimination, court rulings and statements from the authorities, racist incidents continue to be reported. The revised Strategy for the Inclusion of Romanian Citizens Belonging to the Roma Minority – 2012-2020, adopted in 2015, sets targets in the key areas of education, employment, health and housing and addresses also promotion and protection of Roma culture and participation in public and political life.

  • Ecclesiastical Monuments of Brașov/Kronstadt/Brassó and the (Imagined) Topography of a Transylvanian City in Late Medieval and Early Modern Times
Ecclesiastical Monuments of Brașov/Kronstadt/Brassó and the (Imagined) Topography of a Transylvanian City in Late Medieval and Early Modern Times Liviu CÎMPEANU Institutul de Cercetări Socio-Umane, Sibiu Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities, Sibiu Personal e-mail: [email protected] ECCLESIASTICAL MONUMENTS OF BRAŞOV/KRONSTADT/BRASSÓ AND THE (IMAGINED) TOPOGRAPHY OF A TRANSYLVANIAN CITY IN LATE MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN TIMES Abstract: By definition, a monument has extraordinary features that mark landscape and human minds alike. Without any doubt, the Medieval and Early Modern World of Europe was marked by ecclesiastical monuments, from great cathedrals and abbeys to simple chapels and altars at crossroads. A very interesting case study offers Braşov/ Kronstadt/Brassó, in the south-eastern corner of Transylvania, where historical sources attest several ecclesiastic monuments, in and around the city. Late medieval and early modern documents and chronicles reveal not only interesting data on the monasteries, churches and chapels of Braşov/Kronstadt/Brassó, but also on the way in which citizens and outsiders imagined those monuments in their mental topography of the city. The inhabitants of Braşov/ Kronstadt/Brassó and foreign visitors saw the monasteries, churches and chapels of the city, kept them in mind and referred to them in their (written) accounts, when they wanted to locate certain facts or events. The present paper aims in offering an overview of the late medieval and early modern sources regarding the ecclesiastical monuments of Braşov/Kronstadt/Brassó, as well as an insight into the imagined topography of a Transylvanian city. Keywords: Middle Ages, Ecclesiastical Topography, Historical Sources, Brasov, Transylvania.

Back then I was interested in material culture, focusing on late medieval tableware and import pottery in Transylvania. Arriving to CEU and having the opportunity to work with József Laszlovszky opened up new research possibilities and my interest in the field of landscape archaeology. First of all, I am thankful for the constant advice and support of my supervisors, Professors József Laszlovszky and Katalin Szende whose patience and constructive comments helped enormously in my research. I would like to acknowledge the support of my friends and colleagues at the CEU Medieval Studies Department with whom I could always discuss issues of monasticism or landscape archaeology László Ferenczi, Zsuzsa Pető, Kyra Lyublyanovics, and Karen Stark. I thank the director of the Mureş County Museum, Zoltán Soós for his understanding and support while writing the dissertation as well as my colleagues Zalán Györfi, Keve László, and Szilamér Pánczél for providing help when I needed it.

Abstract: Road development, traffic intensification, and collisions with wildlife represent a danger both for road safety and species conservation. For planners, deciding which mitigation methods to apply is often problematic. Through a kernel density estimate, we analyzed 715 crossing locations and wildlife–vehicle collisions (WVCs) involving brown bears, lynx, wolf, red deer, roe deer, and wild boar in the Southeastern Carpathian Mountains. We identified 25 WVC hotspots, of which eight require urgent mitigation of existing infrastructure. Moreover, many of these hotspots are in Natura 2000 sites, along road sections where vegetation is in close proximity, animal movement is the highest, and driver visibility is low. Our study is the first in Romania to recommend practical solutions to remediate WVC hotspots and benefit sustainable landscape management. Mirabilia 10 A Idade Média e as Cruzadas La Edad Media y las Cruzadas – The Middle Ages and the Crusades Jan-Jun 2010/ISSN 1676-5818 Between the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and Burzenland in Medieval Hungary – The Teutonic Military Order status and rule in the poles of Christianity Entre o Reino Latino de Jerusalém e a Depressão dos Cárpatos húngara medieval (Burzenland ) – o status e Regra da Ordem Teutônica nas fronteiras do Cristianismo Shlomo LOTAN 1 Abstract : The 800 th anniversary of the Teutonic Order's occupation of Burzenland (Barcaság) in the eastern part of the medieval Hungary (in the Braşov region in Transylvania – Romania) will be marked in 2011. It is significant because of the role of the Teutonic Military Order as defenders of the Hungarian borders from the invasion of the Cumans heathen tribes into the western part of Hungary. Another issue of significance is the relationship between the role of the Teutonic Order located in Burzenland and their presence in the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem during the thirteenth century, where they held their central headquarters and defended the Kingdom from its enemies. This article will emphasize the idea that the presence of the Teutonic Order in eastern Hungary, in Burzenland, had not been an attempt to divorce itself from the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, where it had its centre which continued to region the Order’s activities. It did serve the Military Order in furthering its institutional authority and standing amongst its membership. It also contributed to their image as defenders and promoted of the Christianity borders and it had reinforced their settlement in Eastern Europe.
