The high mountain peaks of western North Carolina, in particular, have attracted interest due to their resemblance of forest communities in NeW England and Canada and to their high species diversity. From the middle of the 19th century, Grandfather Mountain has been a destination for famous botanists conducting research in the region. -

Department of Botany The University of Georgia Athens, Georgia ABSTRACT Keys, distribution maps, habitats, references, nomenclature, and notes are given for some 16 families of monocotyledons occurring naturally or naturalized in Mississippi. These families all contain one or more species which are found in aquatic or wetland habitats. They are: Alismataceae, Araceae, Cannaceae, Haemodoraceae, Hydrocharitaceae, Juncaginaceae, Lemnaceae, Marantaceae, Mayacaceae, Najadaceae, Pontederiaceae, Potamogetonaceae, Rug piaceae, Sparganiaceae, Typhaceae, Zannichelliaceae. INTRODUCTION The primary aim of this paper is to improve our knowledge of the aquatic and wetland plants of Mississippi. In studying a number of families for the Mississippi Flora project, I became aware of the limited collections available for study of many aquatic and wetland species. -

Families included in this treatment are: Acoraceae, Araceae, Alismataceae, Tofieldiaceae, Hydrocharitaceae, and Potamogetonaceae. Identification keys, photographs, maps of occurrence in northern Alabama, habitats, flowering and fruiting times, distributional data, pertinent synonymy, and comments are provided for each taxon. Flowering plants (angiosperms) have historically been separated into two distinct groups, distinguished by characteristic differences such as leaf venation, organization of floral structures, and the number of cotyledons (embryonic seed leaves). Dicots or dicotyledons are plants having leaves with netted venation, tetramerous or pentamerous (four or five-parted) flowers, and two cotyledons. Monocots or monocotyledons are plants having parallel venation, grass-like leaves, trimerous (three- parted) flowers, and a single cotyledon. -

Austin Prater III All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT The vascular flora of the Lula Lake Land Trust (LLLT) atop Lookout Mountain in Walker County, Georgia was surveyed from 2012 to 2014. A total of 60 collecting trips were made with 672 species and lesser taxa documented. Twenty-eight rare species of conservation concern were documented including the federally endangered Spiraea virginiana and four species previously unknown from the state (Calamovilfa arcuata , Chelone lyonii, Populus grandidentata, and Solidago arenicola ). This inventory along with the vascular flora of Little River (Cherokee/Dekalb counties, AL) were added to the legacy database of the lab of Joey Shaw (UTC) and used to generate a species-area curve representing the full extent of the Cumberland Plateau. -

Significant progress has been made in understanding biological invasions recently, and one of the key findings is that the determinants of naturalization and invasion success vary from group to group. Here, we explore this variation for one of the largest plant families in the world, the Araceae. This group provides an excellent oppor- tunity for identifying determinants of invasiveness in herbaceous plants, since it is one of the families most popular with horticulturalists, with species occupying various habitats and comprising many different life forms. We first devel- at University of Stellenosch on March 29, 2016 oped a checklist of 3494 species of Araceae using online databases and literature sources. We aimed to determine whether invasiveness across the introduction–naturalization–invasion continuum is associated to particular traits within the family, and whether analyses focussed on specific life forms can reveal any mechanistic correlates. -
