CATALOG SPRING/ SUMMER 2018 S18_Cover_Alt.indd 2 8/30/17 11:13 AM WHEN THE WORLD SUDDENLY CHANGES “Give him to us! We will kill him!” About one hundred belligerent men had gathered in front of the tent, calling for me. Greg Vernovage, an American mountain guide, and Melissa (Arnot) guarded the tent and tried to keep the Sherpas at bay. A lone Sherpa, Pang Nuru, was standing next to them. He had nothing to do with us but was obviously perturbed by the situation and knew that this was just not right. I could hear a fierce discussion. The Sherpas ordered me to come out. I would be the first they would beat to death, and when they had finished with me they would go for the other two. I felt powerless and could not see a way out. How could we possibly turn the situation into our favor? What would happen to us? It was over. I couldn’t do anything. My hands were tied. I thought about how ridiculous the situation was. How many expeditions had I been on and then come back from in one piece? How many critical situations had I survived? And now I was crouching in a tent on Mount Everest, just about to be lynched by a mob of Sherpas. This was impossible and the whole situation so absurd that I had no hope. The Sherpas were incalculable, but I would probably not survive. I started to imagine how my life would end by stoning. —Excerpt from Ueli Steck: My Life in Climbing MOUNTAINEERS BOOKS is the publishing division of The Mountaineers, a nonprofit membership organization that has been a leader in outdoor education for more than 100 years. NEW LEGENDS & LORE WITH KARIN STEINBACH FOREWORD BY STEVE HOUSE UELI STECK TRANSLATED BY BILLI BIERLING MY LIFE IN CLIMBING UELI STECK WITH KARIN STEINBACH AFTERWORD BY STEVE HOUSE TRANSLATED BY BILLI BIERLING UELI AVAILABLE IN JANUARY STECK MY LIFE IN CLIMBING An insightful memoir from one of modern alpinism’s greatest athletes • Steck is considered by many to be one of the strongest climbers who ever lived • The holder of six amazing speed-climbing records • The first and only English-language book by this much loved alpinist A climber of incredible strength, Ueli Steck set climbing records for speed and endurance that no one had previously thought possible. This deeply personal and revealing memoir, Ueli Steck: My Life in Climbing, is the Swiss climber’s only book published in English. In 2016, Ueli established a new speed record on the Eiger’s North Face—beating his own record! That same year he climbed all 82 four-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps within 62 days (traveling between the peaks by bicycle), and summited Annapurna’s south face in 28 hours. But the dramatic events of the previous two years—the internationally reported conflict with Sherpas at Mount Everest, and the discovery of Alex Lowe’s body on Shishapangma—changed him and made him rethink his approach to the mountains. After withdrawing from the sport for a period, Ueli rediscovered his love of climbing, and in this memoir he explains how his perspective changed. While his drive to achieve in the mountains hadn’t diminished, evaluating his experiences helped him find a new way to process the emotional and mental challenges that shaped his athletic outlook. Structured around key climbs, Ueli Steck: My Life in Climbing provides the history of each mountain and route, Ueli’s reasons for attempting it, what happened on each climb, and what he learned from the experience. It also includes some fascinating insights into his training regimen. Ueli infuses his story with the joy and freedom of climbing and running. He is honest and direct. Ultimately, his experiences brought him to a place of self-awareness, and he was no longer the same climber who first set the speed record on the Eiger’s North Face. Ueli was determined that he would take only acceptable risks. Unfortunately, Ueli’s bar for risk was still very high—he died while on a training climb on the Himalayan peak Nuptse on April 30, 2017. Ueli Steck was born in 1976 and has been considered one of the world’s best extreme climbers, and the single most successful climber ever from Switzerland. At the age of 17, he mastered the highest rating of difficulty in climbing (9th level in UIAA), while his most spectacular achievement was perhaps the ascent in record time of each of the three most difficult north faces of the Alps. In 2008, Steck received the Eiger Award for his mountaineering achievements, and he was twice awarded the Piolet d’Or, the “Oscar of Mountaineering”: first in 2009 and again in 2014 for his first solo ascent of Annapurna. 1 1 224 pages, 5 ⁄2 x 8 ⁄2, paperback, $21.95, ISBN 978-1-68051-132-1 (ebook 978-1-68051-133-8). Throughout the 2016 wildfire season, journalist Heather Hansen witnessed firsthand the heroics of the Station 8 crew in Boulder, Colorado. In Wildfire, she tells that story, layered with the added context of the history, science, landscape, and human behavior that, year-by-year, increases the severity, frequency, and costs of conflagrations in the West. She examines the changes in both mindset and activity around wildfires and tracks the movement from wildfire as something useful, to something feared, to something necessary but roundly dreaded. Also by Heather Hansen Wildfire shares the drama, hardships, and experiences of the firefighters who try, sometimes (see page 55) in vain, to prevent destruction when a spark flares out of control. Hansen tells the rich and frightening stories of the firefighters themselves and the challenges they face: a safety system struggling to keep up with fire seasons that are lengthening, fires that are becoming more extreme, and agencies that are struggling to cover the bills. Heather Hansen is an award-winning reporter, specializing in environmental and travel journalism. Her work has appeared in High Country News, Men’s Journal, Coastal Living, National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, Outside, and other publications, and she is the coauthor of the award-winning Disappearing Destinations: 37 Places in Peril and What Can Be Done to Help Save Them. Her book, Prophets and Moguls, Rangers and Rogues, Bison and Bears: 100 Years of the National Park Service, published by Mountaineers Books, won the Colorado Authors’ League General Nonfiction award and was a finalist for the Colorado Book Award.
