Review of structures Yealm Community Energy (NDSF + future projects) Profits Reports Newton & Noss Community Fund Environmental Group Grants Reports Parishes of Brixton, Holbeton, N&N, Wembury, & Yealmpton Scope of projects 1 alleviation of energy poverty 2 low carbon initiatives 3 support for environmental improvements, improving climate change mitigation or adaptation 4 benefits for younger people in the community, including practical and support for education concerning the environment, health, healthy living, risk, and individual and public safety 5 other purposes may include, but are not limited to, education, health, and general welfare Judging process Closing date midnight Sept 30th Considerable interaction with applicants to make applications the best they could be Detailed analysis and checking of applications Judging panel met in early November Five members – directors from Brixton, Holbeton, N&N, Wembury, plus Judge Paul Darlow Post-judging analysis of processes and records Funding requests Amount requested by applicants for each category, and number of applications in each category Total requested £34,395 (of total project value £150,000) Categorisation by first category 1 to 5 (number of applications in each category) Social impact Applicants have 6-month and 1-year follow up and reports YCE and Community Fund have to report on the social impact of projects YCE funders also have to demonstrate that their activities are doing good works in the community, with community benefits and social impact The award winners South Dartmoor Community Energy Warm and well Yealm £2541 To reduce the local carbon footprint and fuel poverty by helping local people to save energy and money in their homes and enabling them to get more involved in renewable energy projects Warm and Well Yealm Aim of project: to reduce fuel poverty through providing a free and impartial home energy advice for local residents through events, advice sessions and home visits. Key elements of project; • Advice on reducing fuel bills, help with switching to cheaper tariffs and the support from energy companies • Advice on heating controls and reducing damp and condensation • Referrals for energy efficiency improvements for appropriate households. • Referrals onto other support organisations including the Fire Service for Home Safety Visits, Devon Carers and local voluntary groups • Service to run over winter 18-19 to the end of March 2019 Freephone advice line: 0800 112 3044 Newton & Noss Village Hall Solar panels £4000 Installation of solar panels on Newton & Noss Village Hall, a listed building donated to provide educational, recreational, and leisure facilities for the communities of Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo, Holbeton and the surrounding hamlets Marine Biological Association of the UK Life on the Yealm £905 Celebration of wildlife that lives in and around the Yealm Ist Yealm Brownies Help save the bees £247 Learning how to help save the bees; educational and environmental project around bees Yealm Brownies has members from across our local community, including Yealmpton, Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo and Brixton Ist Yealm Rainbows Help reduce plastics £145 We would like to use the grant to enable us to provide a range of activities to raise awareness and educate the girls about how the planet earth is being affected by plastic. We want the girls to seek out small, manageable changes that can make a big difference. Yealmpton School Reinstating pond £1092 Reinstating a larger pond, involving preschool, afterschool club, rainbows, brownies, beavers, cubs Yealmpton Primary School Wildlife Area Benefits of developing a wildlife area Providing habitats for wildlife and thereby encouraging greater biodiversity. Children have first-hand opportunities of learning about wildlife around them. Building a connection with wildlife and the natural environment. Outdoor learning and conservation. Working with the community – other members of the community including pre-school and brownies will be able to use the area. Before The plan Clear the area of rubble etc. Reline the pond. Plant the pond and margins with native pond plants to encourage wildlife. Encourage wildflowers and plants. Create a seating area/benches for children to use when studying the wildlife . Develop the area to make it more wildlife friendly ( bird- feeders, hedgehog, & minibeast habitats.) So far………….. The funding from Yealm Community Energy ( in response to a submission from FYVS) has enabled us to clear the rubble, reline the pond and place slabs around the edge. The Marine Biological Association has provided a fantastic set of pond-dipping nets through the Life on The Yealm Bioblitz. Yealmpton wild flower project Wildlife-friendly areas £1750 We aim to create various pollinator and wildlife- friendly areas within Stray Park and other community spaces around the Village of Yealmpton in order to promote wildlife conservation and provide an educational resource for the primary school students and residents of the village. Brookings Down wood Tree safety measures £1200 The trees along the bank by Middlecombe Lane, are mostly tall sycamores overhanging the road and are potentially dangerous. It is recommended that we should coppice them. The telephone cable running along Middlecombe Lane means we need a professional. Injury Minimisation and Prevention (IMPS) IMPS £820 IMPS is a charity running for 20 years from the JRH in Oxford. This initiative is to begin an implementation project in parts of Devon, starting with NFPS. This exemplar will be used to spread IMPS through other schools in the federation to which NPPS belongs, other schools in the Yealm, and beyond. IMPS website Newton & Noss Community Housing Community Housing £1250 Create a legal community entity to engage with local affordable housing for local people following adoption of the Local Plan in 2018. The plan called for a CLT to be established and identified an urgent requirement to meet local needs and encourage the re-balancing of the existing community River Yealm Regatta Renovation of 4 crabbers £1250 Renovation of four traditional crabber rowing boats. Rock up and Row introduced 50 people who had never before rowed on the Yealm to these and other boats, under experienced supervision. Yealmpton Cricket Club Towards purchase of roller £800 We are developing our facilities and encouraging new members to play and become social members. We have three junior sides and a senior section playing midweek and weekends. We have members from several parishes within the South Hams, most notably Newton Ferrers, Noss mayo and Holbeton. Wembury Memorial Village Hall Floor renovation £2500 The Hall provides a venue for community activities for Wembury villagers. It is used for meetings, lectures and classes, and for other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation. Holbeton Bells Towards bell tower removation £1250 The restoration of the bells and the tower in All Saints church Holbeton, a Grade 1 listed building. We are also updating the ringing room by installing a simulator, so we can teach new ringers with disturbing the village. Over £50,000 has to be raised.
