Woods will be joined that day by rising PGA star Rickie Fowler and NFL quarterbacks Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) and Sam Bradford (St. Louis Rams). Woods, the most recognizable name in golf and winner of 14 majors and 71 titles on the PGA Tour, last appeared in Vernon in August 2009, when he competed in another NB3 event.     COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.

    TICKET TO RIDE: CASEY MARTIN v. PGA TOUR, INC. Daniel Bryant I. Introduction On January 11, 1998, Casey Martin became the first person to win a professional golf event while using a cart1. Martin rode a cart in the Lakeland Classic, the opening event of the Nike Tour season, thanks to a stipulation between Martin and the PGA Tour2. The agreement allowed Martin the use of a cart in the first two events of the Nike Tour season, after which Casey’s fate would be in the hands of a United States District Court3. The stipulation created a media firestorm unlike anything the Nike Tour, which functions as golf’s minor league, had seen before. More than eleven thousand spectators turned out to see Martin’s first round4. As he stepped to the first tee, Martin was keenly aware of the pressure and thought, “don’t shank it. Don’t shoot 90 with all these people watching”5. Martin did not shank his first shot, but instead birdied three of his first four holes, racing to a first round score of 66, only one shot off the lead6. Martin followed up his excellent first round with a second round score of 69 and a third round score of 657. His inspired play continued into the fourth and final round, landing him in a tie for the lead with 3 holes to play. Martin played the final 3 holes in one shot under par, securing a two stroke victory and his place in history8. Although Martin was extremely proud of his victory, he expressed sadness that he was unable to win while walking.

Tiger Woods recorded a season-high five victories and the lowest stroke average on TOUR and garnered a fifth consecutive Player of the Year honor. Davis Love III won a career-high four times, includ- ing THE PLAYERS Championship, making 2003 the first time in 30 years where three players won four or more times in a season.     MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER This past year witnessed a new evolution in the Notah Begay III Foundation’s (NB3F) fight against Native American childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes and for Native children’s health. In Native American communities, younger and younger children are being diagnosed with the preventable diseases of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes and are on a trajectory that could lead to shortened lifespan, kidney failure and dialysis, heart problems, nerve damage, blindness and even amputations. We at NB3F are proving that this situation does not have to be the “new normal.” I’m very pleased to share with you in this annual report NB3F’s exponential growth as a significant player in the field of Native American children’s health. Building on our successes and lessons learned in numerous Native communities, we launched the Native Strong: Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures program. Native Strong will build tribal communities to prevent childhood obesity and will support those communities with research, advocacy, communications and evaluation. Native Strong represents the future for NB3F and for Native children. Through this program, NB3F offers the irreplaceable gift of health and helps Native American youth to reach their potential. Native Strong is already making a difference. NB3F’s Board of Directors, the staff and I thank you for sharing in our achievements.
