Speech Day – A Celebration of Success SATURDAY 4th JULY 2020

1 “Find your Passion1 in Life” Welcome

It is the warmth of our community that is the fundamental reason why we are getting through this unprecedented global . No one predicted that our 90th anniversary year would take the path it has, with over a term of the school site closed and developed as an outstanding distance learning school for our community. We begin our day virtually together in the Blackburn Chapel & Theatre, a place so integral to the community spirit of Prestfelde School, it is where we can celebrate and enjoy special memories from the year, followed by the opportunity for us to enjoy less formal, but equally important moments of festivity virtually with our friends and families – we do hope you will all enjoy the Prize Giving and celebration of our 2020 Year 8’s. Of course no such day can take place without the dedication and hard work of an incredible team and I am enormously grateful to everyone involved in the planning and preparation. We have enjoyed a very successful year in progress and achievement across the school. From our outstanding Early Learning goals to our 100% pass at Common Entrance and Scholarship achievements. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been so incredibly supportive throughout. This team has given so readily of their time, truly demonstrating selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability and leadership. To our parents I would like to thank you for trusting us and working with us, your support has been invaluable in the success of our distance learning. We have all learnt a great deal about ‘learning’ styles, barriers to learning and children’s independence. To the pupils, you are quite simply – brilliant, thank you for inspiring us all. You have been dedicated, supportive, resilient, challenged and hard-working. I am extremely honoured to lead such a truly fine community through a year when we have all had to adapt and build resilience. As we celebrate together today, let us enjoy the fellowship of our friends, colleagues and families.

8 9 Sports Highlights 2019/20

This time last year, our U 13 boys cricket team were about to travel to Oakham School to play in the National Final against Millfield Prep School. An outstanding performance saw our boys win the match in convincing fashion to be crowned national English Schools Cricket Champions. Nearly a full year on, the school has received numerous accolades, not only for this achievement, but the overall provision of Physical Education. Recently the school was placed 59th in the top 100 Independent Schools for Sport by ‘School Sport Magazine’. Although much of this year has been affected by the partial school closure, many fixtures and tournaments lost, Physical Education remains as important as ever for our pupils. It has been inspiring to see such enthusiasm and commitment during this difficult time, with endless photographs and videos evidencing sporting activities being undertaken at home.

12 13 Extra-Curricular Activities 2019/20

The school continues to add to the variety and depth of after-school clubs and co-curricular programmes available to the children; these additional activities play an important role in the development of the all- rounded character of Prestfeldians. The programmes allow learning to be delivered in a different context and environment. The pupils increase their repertoire of skills and build resilience in challenging activities. This year we have continued to grow the breadth of clubs on offer. The Drama club has become very popular, the production of The Tempest was superb and demonstrated the level of talent and commitment present in our children. The Dance club has again been strongly supported by all year groups and the improvements have been enjoyed in many assembly performances. The STEM club has attracted both Senior and Middle school pupils; its popularity meaning we have had to rotate pupils each half term in order to ensure everyone has an opportunity to attend. The Chess club under the guidance of Mr Evans has also seen increased participation. Aikido, Journalism and Dodgeball have remained popular amongst the children. The Saturday morning progamme of activities has seen strong attendance for Football, Lacrosse/Netball and Rugby. In the Rugby season we hosted a session with Newport and Rugby Clubs which was very well received by both players and spectators; its success should lead to this occurring more frequently. Undoubtedly the highlight of the Saturday sessions was the invitation to parents to attend a coaching/match lesson in both Netball and Lacrosse with their children; it proved to be a very competitive affair. Our Saturday Cookery class has seen our budding chefs produce a wide range of savoury and sweet dishes. The John Muir Award has gained further momentum throughout Middle and Senior school. In Middle School the children have been working towards their Discovery and Explorer awards. The Year 6, as our first ever John Muir group have started the top Conserver award which will be completed throughout their Senior School years. Finally, can I say a very big thank you to all the pupils, parents and teachers for their participation and effort in all our varied activities. I hope that everyone has found something to enjoy, learn and be challenged by.

12 13 Music Review 2019/20

No House Music, no “Olivia!”, no Annual Concert, no external concerts in Abbey or St Alkmund’s, no Speech Day at school due to lockdown. ABRSM exams in Spring and Summer Terms were also abandoned. The most unusual year and quite unexpected for my final one! Peripatetic lessons have been taught successfully through remote access during the lockdown and continues possibly till January 2021. Music teaching online has (within limitations) proved very successful, with almost all peris teaching in this way, and some excellent class work has been presented to Mr Lund via video, mp3 and pictures too – especially from a most promising Middle School. Peripatetic team – lost Mrs Clare Horgan, replaced her with Mrs Julia Hargreaves, wife of John. Some good young violinists coming up through the school. Jessica Weaver leads the way at present having completed on average 12 significant practices a week since the start of lockdown in March. Ms Esther Beard returned as Mrs Esther Randall after the summer, having married singing teacher (Andrew) at Shrewsbury School. Congratulations! Carol Service in December in Shrewsbury School Chapel. Largest senior choir ever. Stand-out piece “Hark how the Bells”. Edward Key sang solo part of “Three Kings” in Carol Service – exceptional quality of voice, gives the lie to ‘boys don’t sing’. They do at Prestfelde – and very well! Ben Farquharson took the difficult solo in “Longfellow’s Carol”, one of two items written by a certain prominent local composer. Orchestra Concert deferred to January to preserve the sanity of the top year – included Jurassic Park (with an exposed and brave solo opening on French horn from Fergus Scholes-Pryce) Awarded internal music scholarships at 11+ to Benedict Farquharson (oboe, violin, voice) and Barney Welch (trombone, piano, drums, voice) Oliver Connell top music scholarship to Shrewsbury School on trumpet, piano and also voice. Woodard Young Musician of Year – four entered and Oliver Connell was selected for Final, held in May. Should have been in Birmingham, but was ultimately conducted online. Oliver learned a Grade 8 piece and performed remotely for this competition. He was commended, but not placed in first two. Appointment as Director of Music from September of Mr Adrian Kindred, former Cathedral chorister and Old Salopian, a clarinettist and saxophonist. Mr J. Lund, Director of Music

14 15 From the Art Department

Although this term has looked very different for our artists at Prestfelde, there has been no shortage of creativity to celebrate across every year in the school. Pupils continue to demonstrate exceptional progress and individuality, particularly during a season of remote learning with more limited resources available. At the start of the academic year, our Senior School pupils continued to impress me with the quality of the work they produce, both in 2D and 3D forms – proving that if you don’t put a ceiling on a pupil’s ability to create, then the sky really is the limit! Particular congratulations go to Charlotte Taylor, James Boughey and William Venezia, who have all been awarded Art Scholarships to their Senior Schools. Charlotte Taylor (Art Scholarship to Shrewsbury School), produced a varied portfolio of work that demonstrated a strong understanding of colour and form in her work as well as an outstanding use of a range of mediums to bring her work to life. James Boughey (Art Scholarship to ) demonstrated huge creativity, experimentation in his portfolio. His passion and enthusiasm for art is evident in every piece he produces, with a particular strength in his use of tone, colour and proportion. William Venezia (Art Scholarship to Wrekin College) produced a superb portfolio of work, showing his flair for drawing. He uses tone, texture, highlights and shadows to create realistic and detailed sketches. Where he adds colour to his work, William does so with precision and a creativity. Pupils are recognised for their progress, ability, and talent through the ‘Artist of the Week’ awards, which are given to pupils each week in celebration chapel, chosen from both Senior School and Middle School lessons. More recently we have had a ‘Weekly Isolation Art Challenge’ running for the past 12 weeks. This has highlighted how Art really is for everyone and that creativity can come from anywhere. We have had responses from pupils in Little Prestfelde, all the way through Middle School and Senior School, as well as staff, parents and people in the wider community! With over 60 entries every week, Prestfelde continues to enable creativity to take an important place across school life, providing opportunities for pupils to extend their learning and love of Art further. Mrs H. Allen, Head of Art

14 15 Drama 2019/20

The actor Willem Defoe said: “With Theatre, you have to be ready for anything.” Well, I don’t think any of us, however skilled in the world of theatre have been ready for what has hit us this year. What a year we have had and a real shame that performances were cancelled or not even begun as a result. Having said that, there has been a wealth of creativity and drama in different forms, and at the start of the year when all was “normal,” the Year 8s treated us to a magical and enchanting performance of The Tempest. Many of these pupils had last year performed in Hard to Swallow and Two Weeks with the Queen. It was great to see them back in full swing, as well as welcoming some newcomers. It seemed that the cast were even more professional this term with a few plays behind them, able to take bold risks and work as an ensemble. We made a few tweaks to the original casting of the play; I am hopeful that The Bard will forgive us for this and hope that he approves of our decision in order to let everyone have a go! So this made for 3 Calibans hiding in the large laundry basket - a bit of a squeeze but worth it for a laugh! We had 3 Prosperos too and 2 Aerials dancing around with grace. Lots of fairy lights and wonderful costumes and set thanks to Karen Hartnell-Beavis, Mrs Wynne’s creations from past productions and the Prestfelde site staff. Great too to have some live musicians playing for us. Well done all! It was also a pleasure to take many Year 8s to Theatre Severn to watch a fantastic performances of An Inspector Calls. Sadly, the Drama Showcase was cancelled due to Lockdown. Pupils had been rehearsing some excellent scenes both in Drama Club and in lesson time - many were going to share with you their work on using physicality within performance and creating inanimate objects such as toasters, blenders, Alexa as well as some interesting events that happened when these sorts of machines go wrong. Had we known what we were in for, we should have also created ZOOM and LOOM scenes too! Many Year 7 pupils loved their Musical Theatre day at Shrewsbury School; this was great to see them in action trying new things singing, dancing and acting. Saturday Drama was also a hit with some amazing improvisations - Year 5 were among the newest and very enthusiastic attendees - raiding the props and costumes cupboard for all sorts of treats to engage and inspire their improvisations. Congratulations to those pupils who worked hard for Drama Scholarships, be it All-Rounder or full Scholarship. Many were successful in All-Rounders and congratulations to those and to all who tried for them. Well done of course to Clara Garavini for her Drama Scholarship to Shrewsbury School, to Eve Mooney for her Drama Exhibition to Wrekin, and Clem Graham for his Drama Scholarship to Wrekin. Drama Challenges in Lockdown gave birth to a range of heartfelt lockdown monologues, virtual teacher puppets, excellent costume challenges and interpretations of Macbeth. Lots of pupils took up the Virtual Shakespeare day set up by Shrewsbury School too. Well done all for your creativity and self-expression. Good Luck to Year 8’s and I wish you well for your future schools. Annabel Scott, Head of Drama

16 17 English 2019/20

Though the Summer term has been challenging for our whole school community during these unprecedented times, our Prestfeldians have continued to show an outstanding attitude to learning in English. I am incredibly proud of the amazing progress our pupils have made throughout the year, particularly during our distance-learning programme; they have each demonstrated resilience, perseverance and enthusiasm whilst getting to grips with our new virtual classrooms, and have developed new skills that I have no doubt will continue through into our curriculum as we return to school. Due to our unexpected school closure, many of our English events, trips and competitions have not been able to go ahead, namely our annual Year 6 ESB exams (which, upon consultation with both pupils and parents, will now take place in Year 7), our Year 8 trip to the Royal Shakespeare Company, various writing competitions and our planned debate competition at Wrekin College. However, we were still able to fit in some exciting events during the Autumn and Spring terms. One of our highlights in English was taking part in Shrewsbury Bookfest 2020, where Year 6 pupils had the privilege of reading six fabulous shortlisted novels and vote for their favourite book. As part of the project, pupils also competed in the Bookfest film trailer and Art competitions. We are thrilled to announce that, out of hundreds of applicants, one of our Year 6 film trailer teams were awarded the runner up prize for their beautifully produced and directed trailer for the book ‘What’s that in Dog Years?’ The author, Ben Davies, sent messages of thanks to our pupils for their sensitive and engaging interpretation of his book. We were also announced as finalists in the Art competition, where one of our Year 6 pupils achieved a prize for their visual interpretation of ‘Eagle Warrior’. Though we were unable to attend the Theatre Severn Bookfest award ceremony in April, our pupils got together virtually to watch the awards, which was a unique and fun experience. Though I am immensely proud of our pupils’ awards and accolades during Bookfest, the biggest success for me was their engagement in reading, particularly some of our pupils who had previously been reluctant to read, yet through the programme have developed a love for books. We couldn’t ask for more. I would like to congratulate our Year 8 pupils for their fantastic Common Entrance and Scholarship results in English, which demonstrate outstanding progress from every single pupil since the start of the year. These results are testament to the hard work, commitment and dedication each pupil has shown throughout the year, but also in the face of adversity. Mrs. Dale and I are incredibly proud of you all. I would also like to thank our Year 8 parents for the support you have given your children at home throughout the distance learning programme; I have no doubt that your unwavering support has contributed to the outstanding results they have achieved. Finally, a huge thank you to Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Scott for their excellent English teaching and the support they have given me and our pupils throughout the year. It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Mrs. Dale, who has been on maternity cover this year, but who has become a valued and loved member of our community. Mrs. Dale is an outstanding teacher and will be greatly missed; I wish her every success for the future. We also welcome back the wonderful Mrs. Martin from maternity leave with her beautiful son Freddie, and we look forward to having you back in the Prestfelde family. Mrs Keogh-Jones, Head of English

16 17 Science 2019/20

Despite the unprecedented of the Summer term, we have had a fantastic year in Science with pupils continuing to develop their extensive knowledge and understanding as well as their investigative skills. All year groups have taken part in a wide range of practical activities inside the lab, out in our exceptional grounds and further afield. Recently, I have been delighted to see how well pupils have engaged with our rigorous approach to distance learning. I am sure we have all learnt new skills which will serve us well in the future, while making exceptional progress. The Science department is very proud of the results achieved by the outgoing Year 8 at both Scholarship and Common Entrance level. These included superb Academic Scholarship performances at Shrewsbury School and . While not completed in standard fashion, the Common Entrance results were outstanding with many pupils demonstrating fantastic progress and attainment. Overall, this has been a hugely rewarding year built on hard work, perseverance and determination where pupils have embraced challenge and overcome obstacles to reach their potential. We are delighted by the attainment and progress demonstrated by Year 6 and 7 and look forward to further success in the years to come. While some activities had to be curtailed there has still been a wide range of highlights this year. Stand outs included the performances in the Shrewsbury School Darwin Science competition and the STEM Faraday Challenge at . Personally, I enjoyed the Juno helicopter visit from RAF Shawbury. Piloted by Prestfelde parent Wing Commander Mike Jordan, this was a real treat for the pupils. It was particularly uplifting for our Physics forces curriculum! We have been lucky enough to visit the Biology department at Shrewsbury School where we took part in a fascinating practical activity looking at the heart rate of water fleas. Year 6 enjoyed a fascinating, and not at all scary, visit from ‘The Animal Man’. We continue to strengthen our links with leading Senior Schools in order to access the best opportunities available. The pupils are always superb ambassadors for a Prestfelde education and routinely receive praise for not only their knowledge and understanding but also their politeness, work ethic and enthusiasm. Thank you to Mr Newey and Mr Granger from myself and the pupils for their excellent teaching and superb support this year within the department. Of course, I must also thank our exceptionally supportive parent body who do so much to ensure all pupils reach their potential. I always look forward to receiving responses to the Science Question of the Month from across the school community. It is a pleasure to hear about the Science discussions occurring at home. I look forward to another superb ahead with Year 6 and 7 and wish Year 8 well in their Senior School. Mr J. Peakman, Head of Science

18 19 Maths 2019/20

It has been a most challenging year, nevertheless, Ms Cook and I have been delighted by the efforts made by the children during their studies. Little did we realise what changes were in store when we arranged competitions, activities and trips. I am pleased to report that last September, our new intake into Year 6 were able to compete in the Wrekin College Year 6 Maths Challenge before lock down (over 70 teams competed on the day). In addition, Ms Cook was able to accompany Years 7 and 8 to a series of lectures at Shrewsbury School called ‘Magical Maths’; our links to both schools being greatly valued by all. Unfortunately, our booked outings to Concord College (for their Maths Challenge) and Ellesmere College (for Maths activities) and Birmingham for the National UKMT team competition were unable to proceed due to the lock down, but we look forward to re-establishing our links to these institutions next year. On a brighter note, the Junior Maths Challenge (UKMT) – an individual mathematics competition sat by over 270,000 pupils from across the UK in which we always participate has, at the last minute, moved online. I am therefore delighted that pupils are being given the opportunity to participate, with assessments taking place as from 15th June. Any certificates (Gold, Silver and Bronze are available) awarded will be forwarded to pupils during the holidays if the UKMT has not distributed them before the end of term. Common Entrance and Scholarship Exams I have been delighted by the standard achieved in the final Common Entrance exams. Special mentions to James Boughey, Oliver Connell, Taliesin Constandinou-Williams, Freya Cooper, Joe Datnow, Timothy Giles, Annabel Jarvis and Dom Taylor who all achieved Grade A’s in both papers. The Scholars also had another excellent year with all pupils achieving either an A or B in all Scholarship papers. Working with Gabe Downes, Clemmy Sowden, Nikhil Atreya, Freddie Allwood, Noah Murray and Fergus Scholes- Pryce has been a complete pleasure, and I have no doubt that they will impress at their Senior Schools. I would like to take this opportunity to state that as from September 2020 our current plan is that both Ms Cook and I will be running Maths Clubs / interventions. Therefore, if your child is struggling with any concept, or if they simply wish to learn some more advanced skills, we will be pleased to help. Mr A. Anstey, Head of Maths

18 19 A warm welcome from the Language Department

Firstly, Madame Bedson and I would like to say thank you to all our pupils who have continued to work hard and be engaged in our language lessons. We are also very thankful to the support we have had from our parents in helping their children at home during this very difficult time. As a department, we have tried our very best to interact and entertain our pupils online and it has been a great learning curve for all of us. We would like to congratulate all our Year 8 Common Entrance and Scholarship pupils who have worked extremely hard towards their examination. They have met all the challenges presented to them and have developed competencies in all four skills. It is a great shame they were not able to demonstrate them in listening and speaking for Scholarship and Common Entrance. They will move on to their future schools as competent linguists, who should be very proud of their achievements. As a department, we would normally offer an amazing French experience to Normandy, but unfortunately, due to unexpected circumstances, this beautiful trip had to be cancelled. I am sure our pupils and parents will at some point discover parts of France as a family and I know that our younger linguists will show interest in the culture as well as the language. Our Senior School pupils are so enthusiastic about speaking the language in class, I have no doubt they will showcase their skills abroad. This year, we purchased a new online course called Dynamo and it has been a great success for the children to work online with. We will continue to use this extra resource at school as it offers a great deal of activities in all four skills. Madame Freddie Harvey

20 21 Tribute to our retiring teachers who have given outstanding service to Prestfelde School

Mrs Suzanne Evans ( 2000 - 2020) A long standing member of staff who has for the last twenty years added to the Prestfelde common room in so many ways. Initially a Little Prestfelde class teacher, then a Middle School teacher, then an English teacher in Senior School and finally as a specialist learning support SENCO. Mrs Evans has developed her career at Prestfelde and developed her skills accordingly. Her wealth of experience and loyalty to Prestfelde must be recognised on her retirement. She will be missed by all as a caring and knowledgeable individual who has the ethos of Prestfelde – heart, mind and soul at the top of her list!

Mr Jeremy Lund (1987 - 2020) For thirty-two years Mr Lund has been responsible for the Musical growth and development at Prestfelde School. He has inspired children as singers and instrumentalists through his own outstanding musicianship and teaching expertise. The musical reputation of the school is widely known, and Mr Lund has dedicated his time to nurturing enjoyment and opportunity through music. We are enormously grateful to Mr Lund, he has been a most highly respected colleague, and Director of Music. Mr Lund always has the words for any occasion, an excellent speaker, compere for events and through his written word. ‘Once a Prestfeldian always a Prestfeldian’

Mrs Charlotte Kaye ( 2012 – 2020) Mrs Kaye started teaching at Prestfelde in 2012, with her three children as Old Prestfeldeians, she knows it well and has enhanced the experience for so many young pupils. Thank you for being that specialist who supports children in removing any barriers to their learning – you have unlocked so many doors for so many children and really made a difference for them.

20 21 A message from the Head

For many pupils and staff this day signifies the last major school event before the next stage of life. Our message to Year 8 pupils: we hope you enjoy this event and I hope you have really enjoyed life at Prestfelde School, for many of you ten years has been a long time and so much of your development has been within our family. Your foundations are strong, go on your journey being brave, feeling inspired and follow those dreams. Growing Up and being ‘grown up’ takes time, patience and experience, what is important is that you find your passion doing what excites you and what you love doing and you will flourish in life.

Thank you to all our parents who make this special community one of love and nurture, your support is always there. Our longest serving parent awards go to joint first Mr & Mrs Daly and Mr & Mrs Cooper, joint second is Mr & Mrs Hoyland and Mr & Mrs Downes. A huge congratulations and a big thank you for supporting us throughout.

Finally, on this day of reflection and celebration, I would like to take the opportunity to recognise the dedicated work of our Prestfelde staff and Governors who give their time to guide and support us in being the outstanding school we are.

We wish you all a safe and happy summer.
