DENBY POTT 'RY Same Location ;~ .....,.- for 50 Years! Historic Route 66 stretches across the U.S. from Chicago to Los Angeles. Along the way, in Lebanon, is a growing popular landmark stop for any history enthusiast, tourist, or local Ozark resident. Shepherd Hills Factory Outlets started in the outlet business in 1972 as an outlet for locally made Walnut Bowls. Ida and Rea Reid, founders, began their entrepreneurship operating a motel in the 1960's called the Capri Motel which was located right along Route 66, known today as Interstate 44. ' They sold the Capri Motel in 1966 and along with their sons, Rod and Randy, started a new business in 1972 called the Shepherd Hills Gift Shop which was leased as a part of the Shepherd Hills Motel and happened to be located in virtually the same spot as the Capri Motel.

Later, as they began expanding, they bought a portion of the motel as well as the gift shop and began construction of their current building in 1999. In the meantime, Shepherd Hills added additional locations including those in Osage Beach, MO, Branson, MO, and Eddyville, KY, and brought in other quality products to the lineup including Chicago Cutlery, Denby Pottery, and of course Case XX pocketknives--making the latter also available through catalog mail order and eventually on the web at www.CaseXX.com. SPRINGFIELD CVB OFFICE GETS 66 LOOK PHOTO AND STORY BY DAVID J. ESLICK

The Springfield, Missouri Convention and Visi- tor's Bureau office on St. Louis Street has a new look and a new name. On Thursday, August 9, a grand opening was held for The Route 66 Infor- mation Center. The new look includes one side with an old gas station feel, complete with a old phone booth just like the kind that Superman changed in. The other side is a 1950's diner with black & white tile floor and chrome tables and chairs. This was the work of Steve Ross, a Route 66 Author from Oklahoma, who also served as the graphic designer for the information center. The photo shows the CVB staff showing their enthusiasm for the new look.

The Ra66it Ranch was built in 1992 to look like a 1930s or 1940s gas station. Rich and Linda Henry built this to be a visitor's center and a gift shop when there was not much of either one along old Route 66. The station looks so genuinely old that the EPA stopped in one day to find out where the old gas tanks were buried. Rich had a tough time convincing them there never had been tanks - it had never been a real gas station at all! Rich added a collection of the Campbell's Tractor Trailers (The Humpin' To Please on Route 66) who's mascot was "Snortin orton" the camel with the big "66" on its side. The majority of Lindbergh Boulevard replaced Denny Road, and the decision to rename Denny was very con- troversial. Opponents pointed out that Lindbergh came to St. Louis in 1925, while the Denny family had lived here for generations. An attorney for one property owner called it a "tin can" road that would be used by gangsters to dump the bodies of their victims.By 1933, over 1,000 people had signed a petition asking the county to change the name back to Denny Road. But the petition was refused. The name Lindbergh disappears from the road within the Kirkwood City limits. That's in part because one of Kirkwood's founders was also a partisan politician. Pro- moters Hiram Leffingwell and Richard Elliot named the new town's streets after presidents from Washington to Fillmore, leaving out John Tyler and James K. Polk. Their names were substituted with those of Senators Daniel Webster and Henry Clay. Leffingwell was a Whig Party supporter, and the Whigs were angered after Tyler was elected as a Whig and changed his allegiance to the Dem- ocrats. The Whigs weren't fond of Polk either, because he narrowly defeated the Whig candidate, Senator Clay. So the main North-South Street in Kirkwood would be named Webster. That caused confusion with travel- ers trying to find the nearby suburb of Webster Groves, so the name was changed to Kirkwood Road in 1915. When the county changed the name of Denny Road, Kirkwood didn't want to go along. So it's Kirkwood Road to this day between Manchester Road and 1-44. On June 17, 1935, federal highway officials desig- nated the section ofMO 77/Lindbergh from the Chain of Rocks Bridge to the new Watson Road as US. 66. In 1936, the American military attache in Berlin asked Lindy to report on Germany's air force, the Luft- waffe. While touring the country again in 1938, Lind- bergh accepted a medal from Luftwaffe Commander Herman Goering. I ONCE SHOWED MY BROTHER A PHOTO OF MY 2002 CHRYSLER PT CRUISER PARKED IN FRONT OF TH E MUNGER MOSS MOTEL SIGN AT LEBANON, MISSOURI. • HE IMMEDIATELY ASKED, "WAS THAT PLACE ONCE A HOLIDAY INN?" IT WAS A LOGICAL QUES- TION TO ASK SINCE THE SIGN DEFINITELY RESEMBLED THE FAMILIAR OLD GREEN AND YELLOW MARQUEES FOUND ALONG THE MOTHER ROAD IN ITS TWILIGHT YEARS. BUT THE MUNGER MOSS MOTEL HAS NEVER BEEN PART OF THE HOLIDAY INN FRANCHISE.

olidayInns were the dream of Kem- mons Wilson of Memphis. On a Hfamily road trip to Washington, DC, he was upset to find that quality of motels along the roadside varied widely. He envisioned a chain of standardized motels that would be clean and family friendly. The first location opened in August 1952 at 4941 Sumner Avenue on the main route between Memphis and ashville. Architect Eddie Bluestein coined the name after the 1942 musical "Holiday Inn," starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Franchised locations began opening in 1957 and there were 1,000 locations nationwide by 1964.

THE ART DECO DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURE WITH ITS ROUNDED CORNER MARQUEE DOES OCCASIONALLY DRAW THE EYE OF ARCHITECTURAL BUFFS AND SOME MIGHT NOTICE A PLAQUE IDENTIFYING THE STRUCTURE AS THE FRANK HARDT MEDICAL BUILDING. FEW KNEW THE COMPELLING STORY BEHIND IT UNTIL COLUMNIST BILL MCLELLAN OF THE POST-DISPATCH TOLD THE SAD FACTS.

It is a great place to start your Lake of the Ozarks Vacation resulting from the collapse of old caves, which created at least one trip, and a place where, like their 20-year-old visitors, you can go natural bridge. There are numerous trails, which will take you past "just to relax"! and through numerous geological formations, caverns, sinkholes, and lush forests. When we got back to the Motel, we got a chance to take a boat ride with Bob and Robin, who took us from the western end of the lake all the way to Bagnell Dam. The lake is like its own highway, with a multitude of resorts, condominiums and getaways built along its banks, as well as restaurants, convenience stores and gas stations built right on the water. We all found the multitude of condomini- ums and expensive houses interesting, especially those that were only vacation properties. These places have totally changed the landscape of the lake, and not for the better in our view. The older vacation homes like Robins lakeside cottage are becoming more and more like an endangered species.

(THEN) Looking south on Lindbergh Boulevard from US 40-61 (now 1-64) in 1959, the Heintz Service Station and King Brothers Motel are at right. To the south of King Brothers, at the intersection with Clayton Road, is an old schoolhouse building that housed an art and antiques gallery at the time. The Bettendorf-Rapp Supermar- ket is at left. •

(NOW) The King Brothers Motel later acquired a bit of a taw- dry reputation. In 1974, de- veloper Donald Breckenridge incorporated part of the mo- tel into his Breckenridge Inn, now the Hilton St. Louis- Frontenac. The old school building still stands and has housed a series of businesses, but it was vacant as of this past summer. Schnuck's took over the Bertendorf-Rapp locations in 1970.
