By Eyal Press October 19, 2020 Even if Joe Biden wins, Scalia’s deregulation blitz will likely take years to reverse. Illustration by Paul Sahre. Photographs: Yuri Gripas / Bloomberg / Getty (Scalia); Getty (Workers) On February 24, 2010, during a show at SeaWorld Orlando, a trainer named Dawn Brancheau was reclining on a platform in the middle of a stadium pool when Tilikum—the park’s largest killer whale—pulled her into the water and thrashed her around until she drowned. Her death was initially reported as an accident, but a subsequent investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration revealed an “extensive history” of incidents exposing SeaWorld trainers to serious hazards. (It turned out that Tilikum, along with two other whales, had previously drowned a trainer at another park.) OSHA fined SeaWorld seventy‐five thousand dollars for three violations and ordered it to either install barriers or keep trainers Page 1 of 20 https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/10/26/trumps-labor-secretary-is-a-wrecking-ball-aimed-at-workers at safe distances during shows. SeaWorld contested OSHA’s actions, and, in 2013, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals heard the case. The lawyer representing SeaWorld argued that OSHA, a division of the Labor Department, had improperly threatened the premise of the marine park’s business, which, he claimed, required close contact between trainers and killer whales.

Secret Societies That Threaten to Take Over America Rise of 4th Reich J. Marrs INTRODUCTION PART ONE - THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE THIRD REICH PART TWO - THE REICH CONSOLIDATES PART THREE - THE REICH ASCENDANT Epilogue INTRODUCTION ADOLF HITLER’S THIRD REICH ENDED IN BERLIN ON APRIL 30, 1945 Thunder reverberated from a storm of Russian artillery that was bombarding the ruined capital. The day before, along with the incoming shells, came particularly bad news for the fuehrer, who by this late date in World War II was confined to his underground bunker beneath the Reich chancellery. Hitler had learned that two days earlier his Axis partner, Italy’s Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, had been captured by paramilitary Italian resistance fighters. Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were executed and their bodies were left hanging from lampposts in a Milan piazza. This news was especially worrisome to Hitler because only hours earlier he had married Eva Braun in a small civil ceremony inside the Fuehrerbunker. Hitler had previously vowed never to be captured alive, and reiterated to his entourage that neither he nor his new bride would be made a “spectacle, presented by the Jews, to divert their hysterical masses.” He made obvious preparations for the end of his reign. He handed out poison capsules to his remaining female secretaries and had Blondi, his favorite Alsatian dog, poisoned. Two other house hold dogs were shot. Dictating a last will, he stated, “I myself and my wife—in order to escape the disgrace of deposition or capitulation—choose death.” He ordered that their bodies be burned immediately.

The Honorable Donald J. Trump The Honorable Mike Pence President of the United States Vice President of the United States 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. Chair of White House Coronavirus Task Force Washington, D.C. 20500 Eisenhower Executive Office Building West Executive Ave N.W. Washington, D.C. 20500 April 10, 2020 Dear President Trump and Vice President Pence: We write to urge the Administration and all underlying agencies to produce, distribute, and make publicly available materials and resources related to the COVID-19 health emergency and the implementation of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act in Spanish and other languages spoken throughout the country. As a matter of public health and safety for all, English-language proficiency should not serve as a barrier to obtain or distribute vital information from the Federal government. To meet the tremendous needs during this unprecedented crisis, the federal government has expanded health and testing options, provided grants and loans to big and small businesses to keep their workforce, and bolstered federal assistance programs like unemployment insurance and nutrition assistance. Unfortunately, much of the public safety guidance, benefit eligibility requirements, and application materials are being distributed in only English. We understand that federal agencies are working hard to implement guidance and programs as quickly as practicable, but many of those most in need may not understand guidance and miss out on life-saving guidance for these benefits because English is not their first language. Failing to immediately provide guidance in Spanish and other languages will jeopardize the health, safety, and economic stability of millions across this country, including small businesses, the workers they employ, and the families they support, as well as everyone else they reach by extension.

  • We Understand That the U.S. Department of Labor Announced a Proposed Rule That Would “Update and Clarify” the Department of Labor’S Investment Duties Regulation
July 26, 2020 Office of Regulations and Interpretations Employee Benefits Security Administration, Room N-5655, U.S. Department of Labor 200 Constitution Avenue NW Washington, DC 20210 Attention: Financial Factors in Selecting Plan Investments Proposed Regulation. Document Citation: 85 FR 39113 Page: 39113-39128 (16 pages) CFR: 29 CFR 2550 RIN: 1210-AB95 Document Number: 2020-13705 Dear Sir/Madam: We understand that the U.S. Department of Labor announced a proposed rule that would “update and clarify” the Department of Labor’s investment duties regulation. According to the news release issued announcing this proposed rule, “Private employer-sponsored retirement plans are not vehicles for furthering social goals or policy objectives that are not in the financial interest of the plan,” said Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia. “Rather, ERISA plans should be managed with unwavering focus on a single, very important social goal: providing for the retirement security of American workers.” We are writing to provide comments on this proposed rule. Background The core idea behind the work of William Michael Cunningham at Creative Investment Research is the recognition that mainstream market-based solutions do not maximize social return. This leads to an underappreciation for the value of human life. We develop market-based innovations to counter this. The elevation of “Chicago-school” economic theories has led to a focus on celebrity and money worship. These magnify and worsen the misallocation of economic resources identified above. Our development of social return investment technologies and the subsequent rise of social entrepreneurs are the methods we have used in this effort. We have radically augmented the development of new investment theories that are the key, we believe, to a higher level of human development.
