Morph rated it it was ok Shelves: comics-read-in OK, look, I love Ms. Marvel and I have been a big fan of everything Saladin Ahmed has written up to this point, but this Ms. Marvel run is getting a big thumbs down from me. In the last volume, Kamala went to an alien planet and obtained a 'smart-costume' with a bunch Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 swanky new features that responded to her thoughts. If you'd care t OK, look, I love Ms. Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 you'd care to find my review of that volume, I cried 'foul' then, but was happy to dismiss it out of my love for the character and the writer. With THIS volume, however, the swipe becomes even more blatant when Kamala's new costume turns out to be sentient and attacks her! Swipes just don't get more blatant than that. It didn't help that Kamala's dad being sick and Kamala being torn between tending to her sick father and fighting the bad guy ALSO felt like a complete swipe of what it basically a Spidey trope. I mean, Saladin, if you really wanted to write Spider-Man, I'm sure you'll get your chance eventually but, for now, could you quit it Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 the 'homages', please? View 2 comments. At its best, this is passable but unremarkable modern Marvel with occasional glimmers of topicality a villainous tech-bro buying Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 town and turning the residents into employees into zombies; a neat paralleling of monopoly capitalism with Kamala's father's cancer. Nothing to compare with the Willow Wilson run, or Ahmed's other Marvel stuff, but acceptable in a forgettable sort of way. At its worst During which story she risks her dad's life in the course of saving villains? Plus, it reminded me that Marvel had been just that Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 bit early with deploying a villain called Lockdown. Who's only a minor technologically-augmented authoritarian, when really the name should have been reserved for a Dementor-esque embodiment of despair who slowly destroys everything but with whom the heroes still somehow find themselves allied. Jun 29, Panda Incognito rated it it was ok Shelves: superherographic-novelsscience-fictionyoung-adult. This story had some very interesting elements, but it was too Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 and preachy, and parts of the story were rushed and cluttered. I'm not ready to give up on this second series yet, since I've so deeply enjoyed previous Ms. Marvel books and care about the characters. Still, I miss the previous creative team, and I'm not sure how long I'll continue with this series. I'll have to wait and see how it develops. Jul 08, Beelzefuzz rated it liked it. I am still salty over the first volume in this run, and had a hard time stopping myself from screaming at the book that it was still just a Spider-man story. It was enjoyable in places and had the best visual gag I have seen in a long time. I laughed out loud when she revealed her "mask. Marvel battles Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 enemies and new friends yep in this second Magnificent volume as Saladin Ahmed picks up on lingering G. Willow Wilson plotlines Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 drive his own story forward. The opening two issues are fun, giving Kamala a bit of a roadtrip only to have Discord and Lockdown ruin it. I feel sorry for both of these characters to different degrees, and I'm glad Ahmed chose to revisit them. Kamala doesn't have a lot of recurring foes of her own, so keeping them around is a good choice, and Ms. Kamala Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 have a lot of recurring foes of her own, so keeping them around is a good choice, and helps keep the consistency between this run and the previous. The main Ms. Marvel: Vol. 2 is of course the Stormranger story, which is essentially Kamala's Venom story. Once I realised what Ahmed was doing with this arc I was even more on-board with it, and the way he manages to balance Kamala's superheroics and the effect it has on her civilian life is so quintessentially Spider-Man that it made me gasp at how perfectly he executed it. Joey Vasquez handles the art on the two-parter, and Minkyu Jung returns for Stormranger proper, so the series is in very well-versed hands when it comes to Kamala, with Vasquez hot off that ill-fated Ms. Marvel Team-Up book and Jung of course the regular artist from last volume. Ahmed hits it out of the park with this second volume; his Kamala really is living up to the Magnificent moniker so far. Aug 06, Ray Smith rated it it was ok. Let me preface this review by stating that I have been a fan of the new Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan ever since they announced the character back in And her series hasn't really disappointed.

  • DIVERSITY and DE-MONSTERIZATION of MUSLIM IDENTITIES in MS. MARVEL (2014–) Anja Borg Andreassen
YES, WE KHAN— DIVERSITY AND DE-MONSTERIZATION OF MUSLIM IDENTITIES IN MS. MARVEL (2014–) Anja Borg Andreassen (Tromsø Public Library and City Archives) Abstract: In 2014, Marvel comics introduced a new character to take over the mantle of the superhero identity Ms. Marvel. The new heroine is Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old girl born and raised in New Jersey. Khan is Marvel’s first Pakistani-American, Muslim superhero to headline her own comic book; as such, she represents a move towards diversification in a historically conservative, white and masculine genre. In addition, Kamala Khan comes into existence in a political and social context where the 9/11 attacks, the ‘War on Terror’, and Islamophobia continue to reverberate. This article explores how the Ms. Marvel comic functions as a critique of the ways in which social norms, stereotypes and prejudices have monsterized multicultural, Muslim identities, especially in the years following 9/11. Conducting analyses of Khan’s conflicted relationship to her own identities and issues concerning visibility and concealment, I explore how these negative framings affect her self-perception, and in turn her self- representation. Lastly, I aim to illustrate the ways in which the comic challenges monolithic and monstrous representations of Islam through its depiction of diverse, multicultural, Muslim identities. Keywords: comic books; superheroes; identity; monsters; Muslim-Americans; de- monsterization. Introduction For a long time, comics were regarded by the academic field as a mass-produced form of easy entertainment. During the last decades however, the medium’s potential to tell complex literary and visual stories has caught the interest of academics and readers alike.

The TSR-produced miniatures sets are likewise not listed, because why the heck would you need to look those up? The index will eventually include fan-made material that follows the same system, as relevant to the Marvel canon.
