Colby-Curtis Museum — Summer 2010 Exhibitions Memphremagog : Leisure & Cruising upon the Lake 19th century cruises and marine activities for lakeside residents on Lake Memphremagog. An impressionistic overview of nautical activities on the Lake, as practised by lakeshore residents from estates in Georgeville, as well as by tourists on the cruising boats that plied the waters of Lake Memphremagog, from Magog to Newport, up to the first decades of the 20th century. A look into leisure boating, and upon the commercial steamers — the Mountain Maid, the Lady of the Lake, the Anthemis and many others —, but also on canoeing and other lakeshore pleasures that summer residents sought upon the lake. An exhibition made possible with the support of Nicole and Robert Gratton Steamers on the Lake Steam navigation ventures by Georgeville summer residents Mainly based on the Murray Collection of Mr Jacques Valiquette, gardian of the archives and artifacts of the Murray family of Georgeville, this exhibition focuses on the commercial and technological activities that a few generations of Murrays pursued, around steam navigation in the 19th century. W.A. Murray experimenting with steam engines and boats on Lake Memphremagog, the engineering and marketing for steam engines ventured upon by associates Murray & Williams, the servicing of passenger steamships by the Beaver Line on the Atlantic — many fascinating and little known topics that this exhibition deals with, taking advantage of an extraordinary collection of technical objects and documents. The exhibition will also recall the importance of maritime activities in other families of summer residents in the area, namely the Allans and Molsons, which were involved like the Murrays in steam navigation on Lake Memphremagog and on the St. Lawrence River, as well as in international shipping lines.
