RUFF

Ruff is one of the most successful coaches in NHL history, ranking third in wins among active coaches and sixth all-time. He is also fourth among active coaches in games coached and seventh all-time. In parts of 19 NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres (1997-98 to 2012-13) and (2013-14 to 2016-17), Ruff has compiled a career coaching record of 739-556-78-126=1,682 points (.561 points percentage) in 1,499 career regular-season games. He has posted nine 40-plus win seasons, including a career-high 53 wins in 2006-07.

In 2006, he won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top coach, and finished second in 2007 and third in 2016. Lindy Ruff is the first coach Jack Adams award winner to coach the Devils since Pat Burns.

Jack Adam Award Winner to Coach NJD franchise (Year Won Award):

Lindy Ruff (2005-06) Pat Burns (1997-98, 1992-93, 1988-89) (1993-94, 2002-03) Don Cherry (1975-76) (Colorado Rockies)

In addition to an appearance in the 1999 Final with Buffalo, he has posted a 66-54 record (.550 winning percentage) in 120 Stanley Cup Playoff contests. He joins the Devils after spending the past three seasons as an Assistant Coach with the New York Rangers, working under Alain Vigneault (2017-18) and David Quinn (2018-19 &2019-20).

Lindy Ruff became the seventh head coach in NHL history to coach 1,500 games, joining active coaches Joel Quenneville (1708), Barry Trotz (1680), and Paul Maurice (1607) and former coaches Scotty Bowman (2141), Al Arbour (1607), and Ken Hitchcock (1598).

ZAJAC

Travis Zajac (997) needs three games to become the fourth player, and third skater, to play at least 1,000 regular season games with the franchise; he would join (1,283), Martin Brodeur (1,259) and Patrik Elias (1,240). Zajac will become the 66th player in NHL history to play 1,000 games with one team. With Zajac reaching 1,000 games played, the Devils will become the seventh NHL franchise and second non-Original Six member to have at least four players skate 1,000 or more regular season games with the club. *credit NHL Stats

Zajac (197) needs five goals to tie Bobby Holik (202) for third place in franchise history, behind Elias (408) and John MacLean (347)

Zajac (337) needs one assist to overtake Scott Stevens (337) for sole possession of fifth place on the all-time franchise list. A 25-assist campaign would put Zajac ahead of MacLean (354; 4th) and Scott Gomez (361; 3rd).

Zajac (53) needs one power-play goal to tie Pat Verbeek (54) for fourth place in franchise history; Elias (113), MacLean (92) and Kirk Muller (69) hold the top three spots.

HOT HOT HOT

Jack Hughes, Miles Wood, and Ty Smith all have recorded eight points through nine games. Hughes, Wood and Smith became the sixth three or more players to record eight or more points through the teams first eight games dating back 2000-01 season

TY SMITH

Jan. 26, 2021, Ty Smith’s franchise record setting point streak came to an end. Smith became just the sixth defenseman in NHL history to record a point streak of five games or longer to start a career.
