The virtual opens for everyone in virtual-only model approach chosen by SCS was one of several options considered by the district to get students back to a learning environment. Todd Shaffer, Winridge Elementary principal, said his students were excited to learn remotely and most were on time. “It’s shaping up to be a normal day, but a differ- ent setting,” he said, later adding virtual learning excited students. “This generation, they’re so tech savvy, I think they’re just kind of enjoying it.” The halls were much emptier than normal and the absence of students was felt. “I’m definitely a student principal,” he said. “I’m all about interacting with students, but I also look at the safety aspect. I’ll sacrifice interaction for safety. … When it’s safe for them to come back, we’re going to throw a party.” Madeline Meadows, a Winridge kindergarten teacher, and the class pet guinea pig named Dixie, sat together in her empty classroom. “I miss them all being here, and I miss the noise,” she said. “I know this is what we have to do, and I know this is going to be the best thing for us right now. We’re going to take it one day at a time, and we’re going to do our best and be committed to this until we get to all be together.” In the spring access to technology was an issue. Now, they all have access. “I think that also helps the enthusiasm,” she said. The day wasn’t without its hitches. Valisa Bankhead’s ninth-grade daughter, Amarie Bankhead may have to get a job. Falling back to our comfort zone is a very dangerous and non-creative state of mind, but we already know that, don’t we! This list of tips will hopefully help us all get out of this rut that we sometimes get ourselves into.
