Technical information Please make sure you comply with the following technical requirements to ensure good video and audio quality – otherwise it will not be possible for your contribution to be interpreted. - Use a stable LAN internet connection with sufficient bandwidth of at least 10 Mbit/s (please do not use a wireless network). - When you take the floor during the conference use a high-quality external microphone, for instance in the form of a headset. Please do not use the built-in microphones on your laptop or PC, as these do not ensure sufficiently good audio quality. - Sit in an evenly lit, bright place. - Position your camera so that there is a good view of you in the video window that the other participants will see. The camera should be roughly at eye level. The background should be tidy and not distracting. - Device for participating in the Webex conference: laptop or PC with built-in or external HD webcam, or a dedicated Webex device. To listen to the original audio (floor), you will need internal or external speakers. - If you want to listen to the simultaneous interpreting, you have to open an additional window for the Interprefy platform in your internet browser (see below). - Please do not log out during the break. Mr President of the European Parliament, Dear David Sassoli, Since March, when the outbreak of COVID-19 intensified in Europe, the functioning of the European Parliament (EP) has changed dramatically, due to the sanitary measures applied. We understand the inevitability of the contingency plan, taking into account the need to prevent infection and the spread of the virus and to protect the health and lives of people. Six months later, the functioning of the EP is gradually returning to normal. However, there are services whose unavailability seriously impairs parliamentary work, namely the interpretation service. The European Union (EU) has 24 official languages and all deserve the same respect and treatment. We recognize that the number of languages available in committee meeting rooms has been increasing, but even so, more than half of the languages still have no interpretation. Multilingualism is a right enshrined in the Treaties that allows Members to express themselves in their own language. Now, that is not happening and we are concerned that the situation will continue, even taking into account the expected workflow in the commissions after these atypical six months. In this sense, we appeal, once again, to you, the President of the EP for the application of the letter and the spirit of the principle of multilingualism, finding solutions that respect this principle and that allow the use of any of the 24 official languages of the EU. The expression of each deputy in her/his own language is a priority so that there can be conditions to fully exercise the mandate for which she/he was elected and a condition of respect for the citizens who elected her/him.

    THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. MEPs also elected 14 Vice-Presidents (VPs): Mairead McGuinness (EPP, IE), Pedro Silva Pereira (S&D, PT), Rainer Wieland (EPP, DE), Katarina Barley (S&D, DE), Othmar Karas (EPP, AT), Ewa Kopacz (EPP, PL), Klara Dobrev (S&D, HU), Dita Charanzová (RE, CZ), Nicola Beer (RE, DE), Lívia Járóka (EPP, HU) and Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) were elected in the first ballot, while Marcel Kolaja (Greens/EFA, CZ), Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL, EL) and Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI, IT) needed the second round.

    Brussels, 24 February 2021 Declaration from Members of the European Parliament to urge the Commission and Member States not to block the TRIPS waiver at the WTO and to support global access to COVID-19 vaccines We, Members of the European Parliament, urge the European Commission and the European Council to review their opposition to the TRIPS waiver proposal at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), which serves to enable greater access to affordable COVID-19 health technologies, including vaccines, in particular for developing and middle income countries. This call comes in view of the European Council meeting of 25 February 2021 and the crucial decision to be made by all Member States at the WTO General Council on 1-2 March 2021. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the need to ensure global open access to COVID-19 health technologies and to rapidly scale up their manufacturing and supply has been widely acknowledged. However, despite efforts and statements made by the European Commission and several heads of state in support of treating COVID-19 medical products as global public goods, this has not yet translated into actionable realities. In this context, the EU’s open opposition to the TRIPS waiver risks exacerbating a dangerous North-South divide when it comes to affordable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, personal protective equipment, treatments and vaccines. The WTO decision on a potential waiver offers a crucial and much-needed act of effective solidarity, as it is an important step towards increasing local production in partner countries and, ultimately, suppressing this pandemic on a global scale.

Women’s rights activists often face arrest and detention without charges. While the Saudi Government has lifted the ban on women driving, since 2018 more than 30 activists, both men and women, have been arrested and often tortured, often without any formal charges. Among them, Samar Badawi, Nassima Al-Sada and Loujain Al-Hathloul, women who fought against the male guardianship system or even dared to run for office. Saudi Arabia is a member of the UN Human Rights Council, 36 of whose member countries publicly criticised it for its human rights records in March 2019. Against this backdrop: 1. Is the VP/HR committed to calling, at all diplomatic levels, for the Saudi authorities to release women’s rights activists, withdraw the charges against them and end all human rights violations, arbitrary detentions and torture? 2.

    MEPs join a new Interest Group to tackle Antimicrobial Resistance Brussels, 21 November 2019 – Today sees the launch of a new MEP Interest Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) to help address this global health threat under a multi-sectoral 'One Health' approach integrating its human, animal, and environmental components. The World Health Organization has identified AMR as one of the top ten global health threats. If no effective action is taken, AMR could push 24 million people into extreme poverty globally by 2030 and cause the death of 10 million people every year by 2050. The European Parliament can play a key role in boosting actions on AMR at EU level to ensure that the Commission and Member States deliver on their commitments and implement effective policy responses to the AMR threat. The European Court of Auditors’ Special Report on EU Action on AMR released last week concluded that to date, the European Commission's support to strengthen national policies resulted in little progress in reducing AMR. This demonstrates the need for a dedicated parliamentary group to help ensure that more concerted action is taken at EU and national level to tackle AMR within a 'One Health' perspective. "The setting up of a new MEP Interest Group on AMR during the World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2019 is a real milestone - ensuring that AMR remains high on the EU policy and political agenda. It is a strong signal towards finding real solutions to tackle one of the most serious health threats of our time, impacting the lives of many Europeans" said Ann Marie Borg, Coordinator of the AMR Stakeholder Network.

We, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, urge you to drop your opposition and to actively support the adoption of the proposal for a temporary ‘Waiver from certain provisions of the TRIPS Agreement for the prevention, containment and treatment of COVID-19. According to the data from the WHO there have been 154,815,600 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 3,236,104 deaths1. There is an urgent need for strong international collaboration to speed and scale up manufacturing, to expand the supply of effective medical technologies and to work with governments and manufacturers to ensure fair and equitable allocation of the vaccines for all countries so that everyone, no matter where they live, is protected. We are experiencing shortages of supply and few wealthy countries were able to secure the biggest share of vaccine doses, leaving a majority of the global population living in low-and-middle income countries without any opportunity to receive vaccine 1 https://covid19.who.int/ (6. May 2021) doses. At the same time pharmaceutical companies approach to intellectual property remains business-as-usual, limiting manufacturing and supply capacities. While we fully support the European Union’s financial contributions to the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator and its vaccine pillar the COVAX Facility for the purchase of potential COVID-19 vaccines, it is simply not enough.
