Galaxy S10: Specification Overview Introduction

This paper discusses an overview of the and hardware specifications of the S10. The Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s latest flagship phone sporting Android 9.0 (also called ) with the One UI (Samsung’s very own custom interface). It was launched under high expectations in response to Apple’s revolutionary iPhone X. It is impressive how much technology is crammed inside the Galaxy S10. Priced at $900, it packs more features than any other phone in the same price range. The new Samsung Infinity-O notch is sleeker and less distracting than the Apple iPhone X notch. It is available in a wide range of striking colors including Prism Black, Prism White, Prism Blue, Flamingo Pink, Prism Green, Canary Yellow, Ceramic Black, and Ceramic White. It boasts a dynamic AMOLED display, which has been rated as the best display on a phone yet. Body and Display

Samsung has implemented many major and critical changes in the body and display of the S10. It has dimensions of 149.9x70.4x7.8 mm. Weighing at just 157g, it is extremely thin and light, but feels sturdy. The glass and aluminum builds make the device durable. The back glass has been upgraded to 6.

Infinity-O Display

As mentioned in Figure 1, the new Infinity-O display that features a hole punch notch in the upper left corner has been facing a hoard of mixed reviews. Although this is the case about the notch, there is a lot more space on the device for the actual screen. The bezels at the top and bottom have shrunk down to the edges, giving more viewing area for customer convenience. With about 88% screen-to-body ratio, this is the highest that Samsung has even gone.

Touchscreen

The display features a Dynamic AMOLED capacitive (the latest display in the market) with 16M colors and a stunning 1440x3040 count, i.e., about 550 ppi density. This display has been rated as the best ever by the screen-testing experts at DisplayMate. In comparison, the iPhone X has an OLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors and an 1125x2436 pixel count. This is a very large difference and can be seen if the two devices are kept next to each other. It supports HDR10+ content (enhanced images in each scene or shot), with a display that can push at over 1,200 nits (a unit of measure of intensity of visible light) in certain circumstances. The whole display is protected by the incredibly strong Corning Gorilla Glass 6.

Fingerprint Scanner

This new device comes with a fingerprint scanner (Figure 2) hidden under the display. This feature has also been seen in devices made by other manufacturers such as OnePlus. There is a designated area towards the bottom of the screen where the finger can be placed to unlock the device. An image of a fingerprint indicates this region on the screen. The S10 is the first device to use Qualcomm’s ultrasonic sensing technology which creates a 3D model of the fingerprint. This makes the S10’s scanner faster and more secure. Platform, Memory, and Features

The S10 comes built-in with the latest technology. As previously mentioned, it has Android 9.0 with the new Samsung One UI. This software has already been released in other phones, like the Galaxy S9+, and has gained success. The version of the One UI on the S10 includes some interface improvements and bug fixes. These make the buttons and icons easier to reach one- handed. This software gives the previous Samsung UI a complete makeover with more vibrant colors.

CPU and Battery

There is not much of a difference when it comes to the CPU. The S10 has the Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 chipset, similar to its predecessor. This phone boasts an Octa-core CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage standard. This places the phone 15 to 25 percent higher than even the fastest last-generation Android devices. The S10’s battery life stays on par with the new and improved battery life of the S9+. The phone clocks at about 12 hours and 35 minutes.

Overall Features

This phone comes packed with more features than any other phone on the market. It has an in- built fingerprint scanner, an accelerometer, a , a proximity sensor, a compass, a barometer, a heart rate sensor, and SpO2 among other incredible technology. After Siri became a success, Samsung launched their own voice-command program called . Although Bixby is still not used much and is found as more of an inconvenience, it still remains on the device.

Samsung PowerShare

An incredible new feature of the S10 is its wireless PowerShare feature. With this, the phone becomes a portable wireless charger for other devices. It can transfer about 5-watts of power. This is the lowest amount of power found in a portable charger. The use of this is more convenience-based than it is emergency-based. Cameras

Every premium phone should have triple rear cameras. These cameras are standard (the regular camera found on most ), ultra-wide, and telephoto (this is an old feature that helps with autofocus). Samsung’s setup of its 12MP triple cameras on the S10 is the best yet. Samsung has added an ultra-wide lens to their previous dual rear cameras. The ultra-wide lens is a new lens which gives the camera the power of fixed focus. This has been seen before in other phones by mobile manufacturers LG and (the LG V40 and the ). All three of the cameras are very sharp. But the ultra-wide angle suffers from slight distortion around the edges. The S10’s camera falls short of what some other phones on the market offer in terms of image quality.

Samsung also updated the phone’s scene optimizer. It intelligently detects various objects and environments to help optimize the camera settings. If the phone detects something wrong, it automatically enhances the image. However, these changes cannot be implemented manually. This creates a problem for Bright Night mode. Even in low-light situations, unless it is completely dark, it does not activate. Galaxy Buds

Galaxy Buds (Figure 3) are the new addition to the Samsung family. These wireless earbuds are Samsung’s response to Apple’s AirPods. They were provided free of cost with the cellphone. They are comfortable and fit securely in the ears. They have a stylish design and are very easy to use. These earbuds are manufactured by Samsung and tuned by audio experts AKG. The housings on the outsides of the buds act as a touch control. The charging case is very compact and slightly similar to the case for the AirPods. Something special about these buds is that they can be wirelessly charged on a charging pad from the case. The buds connect to the S10 immediately out of the box without any problems.

Conclusion

Samsung has, once again, set the bar for smartphones. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ were solid hits, and the S10 has made important improvements to stand out on top. Although the new cameras have some small problems, they can be quite easily fixed in upcoming models. The displays are still the best in the industry. Battery life has taken a huge leap since the S9+ released, and it is just going higher. As a phone, the Samsung Galaxy S10 comes very close to fulfilling the promise of being the best phone for the widest range of people in the world – provided that they are able to pay $900 or more for a phone.
