Reflections Development Annual Report 2013

Blayke in Woman’s NICU Mission To improve the health of women and infants Vision Together we are building a patient-centered community of extraordinary people and exceptional care Values Excellence Continually improving everything we do Commitment Showing pride in, loyalty to, and ownership of the mission of Woman’s Innovation Securing our future through creating new dimensions of performance Mutual Respect Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you Stewardship Carefully and responsibly managing the resources of Woman’s Sound Judgment Making timely decisions based on the information available Dear Friends, If I were to sketch a timeline of my life, Woman’s Hospital would invariably be there for many defining moments – my pregnancies and the births of my children, the compassion and assistance provided to me during my medical challenges, the education of my adolescent boys about their changing bodies, holding the hand of a friend through cancer, critical care, the many celebrations of friends and family – I truly consider Woman’s and its employees as family. Now, I’m proud to serve Woman’s as Chief Development Officer. Thus far, I have been blessed with a long, rewarding career in fundraising. On the outside, I have seen Woman’s good work reflected in my personal experiences. But on the inside, I now see the success of Woman’s programs reflected in our community, from the sick baby who survives and thrives thanks to our Human Donor program to the sexual assault survivor who is now a community advocate. I look forward to working with an organization that has made and continues to make a difference in this community, and I know we can accomplish so much with such giving and generous volunteers and donors. I am tasked with carrying on the amazing work that Lynn Weill, who retired in December 2013, has accomplished. Under her tutelage, the Office of Development raised approximately $6.9 million to support Woman’s community programs and services, established the Woman’s Family Tree Program, and launched Woman’s first-ever Radiothon with Guaranty Broadcasting. I thank Lynn for her efforts, and I’m honored to continue the work she’s done. 2014 is going to be a very exciting year. Please take a moment to reflect on a few of our patients and donors’ experiences – as they look within, as they look back, as they look ahead – and how Woman’s has impacted their lives. I look forward to working with you to make a positive impact on the lives of women and babies in our community. Sincerely,

Beverly Brooks Thompson, CFRE Chief Development Officer

Woman’s Development Report 2013 1 Emily’s Story: From Victim to Survivor

Emily* is now able to recount the “worst day of her life” with unwavering courage and strength in her voice. One night, after falling asleep on the sofa, Emily woke to the sound of her window breaking. Startled, she walked into her bedroom to investigate. Climbing through broken glass and pushing over the dresser in front of her window was a man – with “superhuman” strength fueled by drugs – whose eyes locked on hers. Emily immediately knew she was prey. “I tried running away, and just like in a movie, I got to my kitchen door and couldn’t open the locks,” Emily said. The screaming and fighting continued for more than half an hour. Emily repeatedly yelled “help!” and “rape!” to no avail. She told him firmly, “This is not going to happen.” Then her attacker pulled out a knife, held it to her throat and said, “This is going to happen.” And that’s when Emily made the decision to survive. Countless women can tell Emily’s same story of being sexually assaulted. But unfortunately, far fewer can say they received treatment with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Evidence collected at Woman’s for forensic Emily was taken to Woman’s, where the Care for Victims testing increases the odds for rape conviction. of Sexual Assault program exists to ensure that victims receive comfort and compassion. “I didn’t know that I was going to be taken to Woman’s, but it was such a blessing,” Emily said. “They gave me strength. When I left the hospital, I felt empowered to press charges.” At Woman’s, a victim won’t wait in the emergency room; a healthcare provider will bring her to a designated sexual assault exam room and begin the forensic exam as soon as possible. She must leave her clothes and undergarments for evidence, but she won’t go home in a hospital gown; Woman’s provides her with a fresh set of clothing. She won’t have to wait until she gets home to shower; Woman’s provides toiletries as well as a place to shower. “When I took that first shower at Woman’s, that was huge,” Emily said. “All I wanted to do was scrub him off of me.”

2 *Name has been changed. Woman’s Development Report 2013 Furthermore, the victim’s interview with police won’t take place in an emergency room surrounded by eavesdropping patients and their families. She will share her account of the assault with a police officer in Woman’s private consult room designated specifically to interview sexual assault victims. While the Assessment Center’s design at the new campus is ideal, Emily emphasizes compassionate care as being crucial. Emily will never forget the care she received at Woman’s. How the staff made her feel important when she felt so insignificant. How her nurse, Shannon Messina, held ice lightly against her cheek because her face was beaten so badly. Or how Dr. Randall Brown, one of the country’s first board-certified forensic OB/GYNs, was so meticulous and thoughtful in collecting evidence. “Dr. Brown completed all 14 steps in the rape kit. He told me that we were going to do everything we could to catch this guy.” That diligence can make the difference between a conviction and an acquittal – and other women being assaulted in the future. The evidence collected at Woman’s helped put Emily’s attacker behind bars. He is now serving a life sentence at State Penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Emily’s experience inspired her to give back as a hospital survivor advocate with the Baton Rouge Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR) Center. In the future, she hopes that philanthropic support could fund a full-time patient advocate at Woman’s dedicated to sexual assault survivors. As an advocate, Emily stresses the importance of education not only for the community, but for examiners as well. “I’ve seen the horror stories in how patients are treated,” Emily said. “Whether you can see physical trauma or not, caregivers must be perceptive and sincere.” In fact, Emily was recently with a survivor in the Assessment Center at Woman’s who had just finished her forensic examination with a doctor. “The girl said, ‘Wow, he was so kind.’ I told her he must have just finished training with Dr. Brown.” It’s Emily’s goal for all sexual assault survivors to be treated as she was. “At Woman’s Hospital, you’re not just a number, you’re a name. You’re a face. And they’re with you, by your side, 100 percent. The staff that I had at Woman’s Hospital and STAR, they’re the ones who showed me that light. That there was hope. That things could be better.”

Woman’s Development Report 2013 3 Blayke’s Story: A Little Baby’s Big Fight

The earliest age at which a baby has at least a fighting chance at survival is 24 weeks gestation. Baby Blayke Williams was born at 24 weeks and one day. “Being pregnant was such an easy task at first. I told my husband that I could do this 10 more times. My pregnancy was perfect. Until it wasn’t,” Blayke’s mother, Brittney, said. Starting at 20 weeks, Brittney’s blood pressure began to rise. She was referred to Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Woman’s, where it was determined that her baby’s amniotic sac was not filled with enough amniotic fluid, meaning that her baby didn’t have enough room to move around and develop muscle tone. For the next three weeks, Brittney followed her doctor’s orders to stay off her feet and drink plenty of water. But during a follow-up ultrasound, Brittney’s pregnancy took a drastic turn. Sensing that something was terribly The greatest gift of all wrong, Brittney’s husband, Bobby, squeezed her hand tight and whispered in her ear, “I love you Brit!” A tiny tear rolled down Brittney’s cheek. Brittney’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine doctor met with the Williamses in a conference room. Brittney was admitted to Antepartum, where high-risk pregnant women stay before giving birth, for bed rest. During Brittney’s stay, her condition quickly began to deteriorate. Her blood pressure was steadily rising, and the protein in her urine was increasing to the point that her whole body became toxic. Doctors explained to the young couple what could happen next; seizures or a heart attack were likely. “I put everything in God’s and my deceased older sister’s hands. The neonatologist explained that I needed to hold on until 24 weeks gestational age.” Brittney did just that – plus one day – giving her unborn baby a 30 percent survival rate. Five days after she was admitted to the hospital, Brittney began experiencing excruciating pain. She was rushed into the operating room, where her blood pressure spiked to 210/110 mmhg. Blayke was born by cesarean section at 12:45 AM, weighing only 16 ounces. “The only contact I was able to have with my daughter was to touch her tiny hand and for her to finally touch Mommy,” Brittney said. Brittney spent four days in Woman’s Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU), and Blayke was taken to Woman’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

4 Woman’s Development Report 2013 Because of her extreme prematurity, Blayke experienced myriad complications, including infection, delayed neurodevelopment, chronic lung disease and more. “All I could do was sit in a rocking chair for 15 hours a day, praying and thinking if I could have done anything differently,” Brittney said. “I begged and pleaded and prayed out loud at times to take me instead, spare my beautiful baby girl and give her the life that she was entitled to have.” At the time, Brittney was still in critical condition. Due to the medicine she was receiving, Brittney was unable to breastfeed. “I always planned on my child, and when I couldn’t, I was devastated. With defeat written all over my face, I just knew Blayke’s tiny body would not respond well to formula. This is when I learned about the Human Donor Milk Program,” Brittney said. Woman’s began its Human Donor Milk Program in 2011 to accept human donor milk from several licensed human milk banks across the country. Sick and premature babies have better outcomes when fed . Only breast milk – not any other mammal’s milk or formula – can colonize a baby’s intestines with healthy bacteria, which help absorb nutrients and develop the immune system, as well as prevent the growth of pathogens. Furthermore, breast milk protects against necrotizing enterocolitis, a severe, often fatal illness that affects premature babies’ small intestines. The cost of Christmas 2013 human donor milk is not covered by insurance or Medicaid, and current philanthropic funding allows Woman’s to provide human milk for the first month of life for all infants who weigh less than two pounds, ensuring they get the nutrition they need to thrive. “Human donor milk gave Blayke’s body a chance to fight off the three blood clots in her heart. It gave her the vitamins, antibodies and the nourishment she needed to overcome all the obstacles she faced,” Brittney said. “This program gave my husband and I the greatest miracle of all.” Slowly but surely, Blayke’s condition steadily improved. Brittney and Bobby could finally hold her delicate body after one month, and soon, the day Brittney and Bobby dreamed of finally arrived. As the Williamses left the hospital after five long months, their NICU “family” threw a going home party and showered Blayke with gifts, love and kisses. “Bobby and I were so overwhelmed with joy and happiness, but with a side of deep sadness to leave our family at Woman’s Hospital,” Brittney said. “Each staff member treated Blayke as if she was one of their own. They would call Christmas 2013 and check on her on their days off. The kind words, funny jokes, hugs and kisses meant the world to Bobby and me.” To Brittney, the span of one month – the month Blayke received human donor milk – made it possible for Blayke to now be a happy, healthy two-year-old. In that time, Blayke has gone from 16 ounces to 16 pounds and 8 ounces. “This milk saves the lives of our truly miraculous babies,” Brittney said.

Woman’s Development Report 2013 5 Joey’s Story: Changing the World, One Jar at a Time

Munching on an afternoon snack, legs dangling from a barstool that dwarfs his uniform-clad frame, Joey Roth doesn’t look like the typical nonprofit founder. It’s a normal weekday afternoon for the young philanthropist, tallying donations and giggling at the sound of his brother singing in the shower. Though the entrepreneurial 7-year-old won’t graduate high school until 2024, he already has big plans to raise millions: “I’m trying to change the world.” Joey explains that he has always had a knack for change on the ground and loves to scour check-out lines and parking lots during family grocery store trips. He decided to turn his skill into an opportunity to help others by donating his collections to Woman’s Hospital to “help the babies.” With his project, “Jar for Change,” he is asking others to collect money in their own jars and to place jars in libraries, schools, grocery stores and other public places. His goal? “Collect everyone’s change to change the world.” With his parents’ help, Joey has created a starter kit for supporters, including customizable jar decorations, step-by- step instructions and prize incentives for top fundraisers. “I’m going to tell everyone I know, and then I’m going to tell them to tell everyone they know… and on and on,” he explained. “They’re going to put (the jars) in all different places.” In selecting the name for his project, Joey used his initials, J.A.R., his idea to collect “change” in “jars,” and his ambition to make an impact on the world. Joey started collecting money during the summer of 2013, and he has already raised more than $3,000. Joey said people are often willing to donate their change collections to his cause. His donation will honor Dr. Ann LaFranca, the OB-GYN who delivered him at Woman’s. Joey’s father, Michael Roth, said Joey has heard stories of how Dr. LaFranca’s skills kept him out of harm’s way during his delivery.

6 Woman’s Development Report 2013 “Jar for Change” donations will also purchase iPads to be used for Baby Time, a program that allows new moms to visit with their babies and the medical team over a secured internet connection. So, even if a mom is not able to walk after delivery due to a cesarean section or complications, she can see her newborn in the NICU. Deborah Sternberg Roth, Joey’s mother, said his philanthropic inclination likely stems from his upbringing in the Jewish faith, where tzedakah, or charity, is common. “They’ve grown up giving tzedakah weekly at Sunday school,” said Deborah. “Joey’s certainly more about the bigger picture and giving and collecting money for causes.” “It was a natural response when we said, ‘What are you going to do with the money you found?’ He said, ‘I’m going to give it to tzedakah’,” Michael said, adding, “It doesn’t surprise us because he’s unusually kind.” Joey said fundraising is “pretty hard work,” but he thinks it’s worth it. Deborah said Joey has learned about the importance of giving back and helping others throughout his young life. “It’s never too early to give back, and it doesn’t matter how much money you have or how much money you can give. The smallest amount is meaningful,” she said. “It’s important to teach children and to learn as adults that any amount makes a difference.” Joey built support for “Jar for Change” with a presentation to his fellow students in grades Pre-K through 12 at Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge. Presenting his fundraising idea to students twice his age didn’t faze the young founder at all. Joey expertly navigated explanations of his vision as he practiced his presentation for his parents. “People everywhere need our help,” he urged. Woman’s Development Report 2013 7 William’s Story: Helping Others Live

Though breast cancer claimed the life of his wife, Lynn, in 2011, William Dickerson is inspired to help other women battling the disease. “She told me, ‘I hope one day they’ll find a cure for this terrible disease, even though it’s too late to benefit me.’ That was Lynn. She wasn’t selfish. She just wanted other folks to live,” William said. William is carrying out Lynn’s wishes, giving other women a chance at life through a generous gift that will benefit Woman’s cancer services program. William sponsors the Woman’s Victory Open golf tournament, which is held annually during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Funded through events such as Woman’s Victory Open as well as through continued philanthropic support from the community, Woman’s Mobile Mammography Coach travels to 76 locations throughout a 15-parish area and provides lifesaving mammograms to approximately 5,300 women annually. As a result of Woman’s efforts, 25 to 30 cancers that may have gone undiagnosed are discovered each year. Mary Lobos, Lynn’s longtime friend, recalls forming an instant friendship the moment they met. “We met at dinner, which was around 7:00 p.m. Afterward, we chatted until one in the morning. We felt like we knew each other forever.” Mary also remembers Lynn for her beautiful smile, joyful spirit and loving nature. Mary and three friends sponsored a Woman’s Victory Open golf tournament team in Lynn’s honor. “Lynn had a strong desire to help others, serving as a board member for several organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge, the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce and the Baton Rouge chapter of the American Heart Association,” Mary said. Lynn was also actively involved with the Baton Rouge Links organization, which provides wigs to cancer patients who cannot afford them. Lynn came up with an idea for Wigs, Martinis & Bow Ties, an annual fundraiser for the organization. She passed away before the inaugural event, which recently marked its third year. And though Lynn didn’t play golf, both William and Mary know she would have been thrilled that a team played in her honor. “I know Lynn was watching us play golf in the tournament from above,” Mary said. “And having a laugh at us of course. We were terrible!”

Woman’s Development Report 2013 17 New Campus Gifts

New Campus Gifts Woman’s New Campus Gifts Initiative was established to seek philanthropic support from the community to add several critical components back into the new replacement hospital to further enhance technology, provide an unprecedented patient experience, and, more importantly, help save lives. In 2008, when construction on the new campus was halted due to the economic downturn that affected the nation and our state, fiscally prudent changes through rescaling were made to the size and scope of Woman’s original vision to reduce the project budget. Generous philanthropic support has allowed us to restore a number of these elements that add to the healthcare delivery system for women and babies now and in the future.
