The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins
Journal of Social Change 2017, Volume 9, Issue 1, Pages 1–3 ©Walden University, LLC, Minneapolis, MN DOI: 10.5590/JOSC.2017.09.1.01 Book Review The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, by John Perkins. Oakland, CA: Berrett-Koehler, 2016, ISBN: 978-1-62656-674-3, 353 pp. $12.20, paperback. Reviewed by Natalie Disque Walden University Author John Perkins writes a bold, yet compelling, account of his personal experiences as an economic hit man (EHM), involving manipulating data and foreign government officials, deception, lies, sex, assassinations, and attempted murder. His true story recounted in the book The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man is an eye-opener for those who are unaware of the underpinnings of the government’s ability to bully other countries into large debt to benefit American multinational corporations and secure our place as the sole superpower. Dodging the Vietnam draft, Perkins took an opportunity with the Peace Corps where he and his wife Ann were placed in Ecuador to help local Incan brick makers improve their rudimentary methods and sales. Due to his sympathies with the indigenous people, John helped them to do whatever it took in order to prosper. This led to the forming of a co-op, enabling the brick makers to work together to make money. While in Ecuador, he met a businessman from an international consulting company called MAIN who saw John’s ability to understand the natives and probed John on his thoughts regarding whether or not he thought the World Bank, which funded MAIN, should lend Ecuador billions of dollars for infrastructure projects. -

Sure the author has started a non-profit or two, but he still hasn't really done much to create real change except for talking and no doubt getting speaker fees from about how terrible of a person he was. He would overinflate his figures to encourage the developing company to overextend themselves into debt. So what to think? Out of Many, One. He also disputes Perkins' claim that 51 of the top world economies belong to companies. I guess that's human nature, but man did it get annoying to hear him feel bad for himself over and over. Malone Submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for The Master of Arts in Sociology The University of Toledo August 2008 This thesis is a critical examination of U.S. foreign intervention from 1948 to 2008. Using a comparative/historical analysis of seven cases—Iran, Guatemala, Indonesia, Chile, Nicaragua, Panama, and Iraq—this study finds patterns of U.S. state/state-sponsored terror and intervention. Using world-system theory and G. William Domhoff’s class-domination theory of power, this study explains how and why the U.S. government, the U.S. military, the CIA, and U.S. corporations participate in economically motivated terrorist acts to support the capitalist mode of production, U.S. investments, and access to markets and natural resources. Finally, this study reveals patterns (in addition to the use of terror) that the U.S. government follows while intervening in the affairs of foreign nations. ii Dedication This thesis is dedicated to my parents. While they may not always agree with what I say or write, they have always been supportive of my education and my goals. -

Debt and Deception: Review Essay on John Perkins, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (San Francisco: Berrett-Koehler, 2004) and Noreena Hertz, The Debt Threat: How Debt is Destroying the Developed World . and Threatening Us All (New York: HarperCollins 2004) for Business Ethics Quarterly These are two interesting, controversial, complementary books. The authors are of different generations. John Perkins is sixty (2005). He was a college student during the Vietnam War who came to oppose the war, then joined the Peace Corp to avoid the draft. Noreena Hertz is thirty-six. She is an academic/activist, a professor of political economy who was tear-gassed at the massive Global Justice protest in Genoa (2001) at which hundreds were beaten by the Italian police and one protestor killed. Their backgrounds are different. Perkins is an American who grew up in rural New Hampshire and attended the Tilton School, a prep school at which both his parents taught. Finding himself between two worlds, the "townies" with whom he had attended grade school and the children of affluence who were his high school cohorts, he compensated (he tells us) by excelling at everything: athletics, academics, school politics. He was offered an athletic scholar to Brown and an academic scholarship to Middlebury College. At his parent's insistence, he chose the latter--then rebelled, dropped out, moved to Boston. He eventually got an undergraduate degree from Boston University. Hertz is British, the daughter of fashion designer and feminist activist Leah Hertz. (Hertz describes her mother as "a cross between Mother Theresa, Superwoman and Cher."1) She was precocious--school at three, A levels at sixteen, a graduate of University College London at nineteen. -

Wagenhofer looks behind the scenes of the colourful backdrop of banks and insurance companies. What does our pension provision have to do with the property blow-up in Spain? We don’t have to buy a home there in order to be involved. As soon as we open an account, we’re part of the world-wide finance market – whether we want to be or not. The bank enters our account into the global money circuit. Possibly banks or pension funds lend our money to speculators. We customers have no idea where our debtor lives and what he does to pay our interest fees. -

Research Journal of English Language and Literature (RJELAL) Vol.5.Issue 1. 2017 A Peer Reviewed (Refereed) International Journal (Jan-Mar) http://www.rjelal.com; Email:[email protected] RESEARCH ARTICLE THE NOVEL FORM OF ENSLAVING THIRD WORLD NATIONS IN THE GUISE OF CORPORATOCRACY: A STUDY OF THE CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMIC HIT MAN AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE BY JOHN PERKINS Dr.R.SIVADITHYA Faculty member, PG Centre, Gadwal, Palamuru University Mahabubnagar & A life member of Osmania University Centre For International Programs ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to show the existence of slavery in a different light and as a worse form than chattel slavery in the guise of corporatocracy which is the result of globalization. Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown Virginia. The traditional form of slavery was called chattel slavery because the African Americans were treated as the personal property of the owner and were purchased and sold like commodities. The slave population increased considerably from 1600 to 1800. During the era of globalization, slavery assumed a new form which is radically different from chattel slavery. The modern form of slavery is not based on racial discrimination but is related to economic disparities between the developed and the developing nations. This article argues that modern day slavery is the result of the practices of globalization. The practices of body shopping and the concepts of developmental projects proposed by the first world nations to the third world nations are promoting financial dependence of third world nations. -
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man [John Perkins describes himself as a former economic hit man—a highly paid professional who cheated countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. 20 years ago Perkins began writing a book with the working title, “Conscience of an Economic Hit Men.” Perkins writes, “The book was to be dedicated to the presidents of two countries, men who had been his clients whom I respected and thought of as kindred spirits–Jaime Roldos, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama. Both had just died in fiery crashes. Their deaths were not accidental. They were assassinated because they opposed that fraternity of corporate, government, and banking heads whose goal is global empire. We Economic Hit Men failed to bring Roldos and Torrijos around, and the other type of hit men, the CIA-sanctioned jackals who were always right behind us, stepped in’’. John Perkins goes on to write: “I was persuaded to stop writing that book. I started it four more times during the next twenty years. On each occasion, my decision to begin again was influenced by current world events: the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1980, the first Gulf War, Somalia, and the rise of Osama bin Laden. However, threats or bribes always convinced me to stop.” But now Perkins has finally published his story. The book is titled Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. John Perkins recently spoke with Amy Goodman of ‘Welcome to Democracy Now’ at their Firehouse studios. Excerpts:] AMY GOODMAN: John Perkins joins us now in our firehouse studio. -

The impact of these adjustment loans is widely criticized due to the negative effects observed. Our purpose is to investigate in depth why these adjustment programs have not delivered the expected results. We’ve found that there exist some undesirable consequences following SAP implementation that has a hindering effect on growth. These, combined with the complicate context in which the IMF and World Bank operates can be seen as the explanation for the adversity experienced. Acknowledgement We would like to thank our supervisor Christos Papahristodoulou for his guidance. Table of Contents 1.
