Eric James Davidson New Showcase York 2017 Introduction A very warm welcome to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s annual New York Showcase. I am delighted to welcome you on behalf of all of the staff and students on our Acting and Musical Theatre degree programmes. The students performing today are all US or Canadian citizens, keen to share the fruits of their studies from our unique, Scottish institution. As a national institution, the Royal Conservatoire has students from some 52 countries working and learning together in a close-knit, multi-disciplinary environment. RCS has strong and active links with a wide range of Scottish and UK organisations including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Citizens Theatre Glasgow, BBC Scotland and many others. We are very proud of our reputation for producing generations of successful artists, such as James McAvoy, Alan Cumming, Denis Lawson, Alexandra Silber, Rebecca Faulkenberry, Laura Fraser, David Tennant, Sam Heughan, Billy Boyd, Laura Donnelly, Robert Carlyle, John Doyle and Richard Madden. We hope you enjoy the performance as a new generation of talented and committed artists take some of their first steps into the profession. Please don’t hesitate to come and talk to me and my colleagues (as well as our students!) after the performance. ‘A PRINCESS FOR CHRISTMAS’ CAST BIOS SIR ROGER MOORE (Edward) – Born in Clapham, London in 1927, the son of a London policeman, Sir Roger Moore attended Hackford Road Elementary School and then Battersea Grammar School. Evacuated to Worthing at the outbreak of World War II, he returned to London in 1943. After leaving school, Moore worked as a tracer/filler/office boy with the animation company Publicity Picture Productions. He was fired after a short time, and in 1944 he was accepted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and attended for three terms. He then joined the Cambridge Arts Theatre Repertory Company. In 1945, Moore was called up for National Service and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and then promoted to Captain in the Combined Services Entertainment. At the end of his Army service he worked as an assistant stage manager at the BBC Studios at Alexander Palace and supplemented his salary by working as an advertising model. Then came a small part in the West End stage production of Mister Roberts and an understudy role alongside David Tomlinson in The Little Hut. His American debut followed, and he appeared in A Pin to See the Peepshow on Broadway. It was then that Hollywood beckoned with an MGM contract. In 1957, he played the title role in "Ivanhoe," returning to England for a total of 39 episodes. When Moore returned to Hollywood in 1958 he was put under contract by Warner Bros. and starred in the TV series "The Alaskans” and "Maverick.” In 1962, Moore got his big break when he was cast as "The Saint,” the most successful TV series at that time.

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • Teaching About Scotland
Fiona Ross – FindYourFeet.de Teaching about Scotland This is one of a series of units for teaching about Scotland in German Secon- dary schools. All the materials were created by very motivated students in my Area Studies Scotland class, some with experience of teaching in a “Gymna- sium“. The materials can be tried out as they are, or altered as desired. They can also be combined. One basic idea behind them all is that both the teacher and the learners can develop the materials themselves, according to their own interests, and then even offer them to another class. For some of these units printed information material is needed, for example ferry timetables, but if you don’t have this, it is no problem to print it out from the Internet. Useful websites are given. Scottish Actors, Films and Directors Target group and Aim. The unit can be used with intermediate learners. The goal is simply to show youngsters that Scotland is more present in the film world than they probably think. Laura thought that about 50 minutes would be enough. This unit was created by Laura Lourdas, an Erasmus Exchange student from Paris.
