The Sonoran Desert is so important to the natural heritage of the United States and Mexico that both countries are vested in conservation lands and programs and on a joint mission to preserve it. “A border wall,” says one conservation coalition leader, “harms our mission” (Campbell 2017). Enhancing the IUCN World Heritage Programme II – Focus Europe 7-11 November 2013, Vilm, Germany 37th World Heritage Committee Session Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 16-27 June 2013 Boris Erg IUCN The 37th Session of the World Heritage Committee took place in the Kingdom of Cambodia, in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap-Angkor, from 16th to 27th June 2013. It was organized by UNESCO and the National Commission of Cambodia with the support of the Office of the Council of Ministers. World Heritage Committee The Committee is a governing body responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention. It decides on new inscriptions on the World Heritage List. It examines State of Conservation reports and also decides on the inscription or deletion of properties on the List of World Heritage in Danger. World Heritage Committee (ctd.) The 21 States Parties of the current World Heritage Committee are the following: Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Mali, Mexico, Qatar, Russian Federation, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, and United Arab Emirates. During the 19th session of the General Assembly (19-21 November 2013), 12 seats will have to be filled. Outgoing members in 2013 are: Cambodia, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Russian Federation, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, United Arab Emirates. IUCN’s advisory role Ahead of the annual World Heritage Committee meeting, IUCN submits its recommendations regarding the inscriptions of new sites following a rigorous evaluation process through which it works with members on the ground, scientific experts, independent feedback and desk reviews. IUCN also submits “state of conservation” reports for sites under threat or sites that are already on the danger list or that it considers should be. -

Report prepared by The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico and Arizona. 85 p. i Executive Summary Sky Island grasslands of central and southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico form the “grassland seas” that surround small forested mountain ranges in the borderlands. Their unique biogeographical setting and the ecological gradients associated with “Sky Island mountains” add tremendous floral and faunal diversity to these grasslands and the region as a whole. Sky Island grasslands have undergone dramatic vegetation changes over the last 130 years including encroachment by shrubs, loss of perennial grass cover and spread of non-native species. Changes in grassland composition and structure have not occurred uniformly across the region and they are dynamic and ongoing. In 2009, The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) launched its Sky Island Grassland Initiative, a 10-year plan to protect and restore grasslands and embedded wetland and riparian habitats in the Sky Island region. The objective of this assessment is to identify a network of priority grassland landscapes where investment by the Foundation and others will yield the greatest returns in terms of restoring grassland health and recovering target wildlife species across the region. -

Changes in the Pinacate Reserve Ecosystems: Invasion of Non-Native Plants Denise Z. Avila-Jiménez Centro de Datos para la Conservación (CDC), Instituto del Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de Sonora (IMADES), Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico Abstract—Over the years, humans have modified the Sonoran Desert by introducing invasive plants that prosper in disturbed and non-disturbed habitats. These invaders modify the dynamics and structure of populations and the composition of communities, which in turn can result in radical changes in wildlife habitat. The natural landscape of the Sonoran Desert is characterized by extensive valleys with parallel and discontinuous arrangements of narrow ranges (Shreve and Wiggins, 1964). Within this ecosystem is the heart of the Sonoran Desert called the Pinacate Reserve (Reserva de la Biosfera El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar). The Pinacate Reserve registers 97 invasive plant species, of which 18 are altering the natural ecosystems. In 2002 the Sonora Conservation Data Center (CDC) started this area, the Reserve personnel, students, and social workers a project to identify and map invasive species in Sonora and have made some first attempts to control the Sahara mustard implemented a pilot program in the Pinacate Reserve. Intestinal bacteria are an important indicator of the health of their host. Incorporating periodic assess- ment of the taxonomic composition of these microorganisms into management and conservation plans can be a valuable tool to detect changes that may jeopardize the survival of threatened populations. Here we describe the diversity and abundance of fecal bacteria for the black–tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), a threat- ened species, in the Janos Biosphere Reserve, Chihuahua, Mexico. We analyzed fecal samples through next generation massive sequencing and amplified the V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene using Illumina technology. The results were analyzed with QIIME based on the EzBioCloud reference. We identified 12 phyla, 22 classes, 33 orders, 54 families and 263 genera. -

While impacts of this loss on maintenance of grassland biodiversity have been widely documented, much less is known about the consequences on the supply of ecosystem services. Here we assessed the effect of prairie dogs in the supply of five ecosystem services by comparing grasslands currently occupied by prairie dogs, grasslands devoid of prairie dogs, and areas that used to be occupied by prairie dogs that are currently dominated by mesquite scrub. Groundwater recharge, regulation of soil erosion, regulation of soil productive potential, soil carbon storage and forage availability were consistently quantitatively or qualitatively higher in prairie dog grasslands relative to grasslands or mesquite scrub. Our findings indicate a severe loss of ecosystem services associated to the absence of prairie dogs. These findings suggest that contrary to a much publicize perception, especially in the US, prairie dogs are fundamental in maintaining grasslands and their decline have strong negative impacts in human well – being through the loss of ecosystem services. -
