Next Meeting

All APS, Jallukar LCG and WAMA members How to get to Grannes Western StawellHighway and supporters are invited to a combined meeting on Tuesday 21st June at Glenda Lewin’s property ‘Grannes’ at 7.30 pm. Jess Gardner of Greening Australia who is in charge of the huge ’Habitat 141’ project. (Check out the Habitat 141 website for more info.) will speak on the subject of Habitat 141 as well as the re-creation of native grasslands and how our three groups can be involved. Pomonal Road Jess works with GA to create native grasslands in areas where they once occurred such as on Pipeline track parts of the WAMA site, where there would have once been grassy woodland areas. Grannes WAMA would love to establish an area of * native grasslands (probably somewhere in the modified covenant area, on far side of wetland). To achieve this we will need a large nursery site, glasshouse etc. Discussions with Phil Williams indicate that he is only too happy to allow the use of his facilities for this purpose. Come along and hear a most interesting presentation about these two important topics, and what we can do, as a community to assist.

Australian Plants Society Grampians Newsletter 2 Grampians Flora Botanic Garden Halls Gap Report

There’s a mix of good news and bad news. To start with the bad news first, we’ve had several very large and heavy branches fall, one wrecked the garden near the information shelter knocking over the pergola and killing several plants. Another came down near our wetland area, where some of us had been working not that long before. And quite a few smaller plants have not survived the prolonged dry. But no-one was hurt, several of us have our firewood supplies at home replenished and we had an excellent bonfire in the drizzle on 11 May. Now for the good news. Firstly, also on 11 May we put in quite a few plants propagated for us by you folk and managed to burn all the woodpiles without bringing the fire brigade out. We’ve made a new bed along the main path, and filled in some bare patches in other areas. Despite the dry, we are still getting good comments about the garden. And back in March the Playgroup held a Teddy Bear’s picnic in the garden which was great fun. Next working bee is 8 June (always the second Wednesday of the month). Start about 9.30, finish at lunch time. Newcomers very welcome.

May 29 has been pronounced Botanic Gardens Open Day across Australia. We in Halls Gap are not doing anything special but many other gardens are having events. Maybe take a day off and enjoy our peaceful spot or visit another garden somewhere? Melton has a beautiful new garden, with many Australian natives. Margo
