CALIBRATING DETERMINACY STRENGTH IN LEVELS OF THE BOREL HIERARCHY SHERWOOD J. HACHTMAN Abstract. We analyze the set-theoretic strength of determinacy for levels of the Borel 0 hierarchy of the form Σ1+α+3, for α < !1. Well-known results of H. Friedman and D.A. Martin have shown this determinacy to require α+1 iterations of the Power Set Axiom, but we ask what additional ambient set theory is strictly necessary. To this end, we isolate a family of Π1-reflection principles, Π1-RAPα, whose consistency strength corresponds 0 CK exactly to that of Σ1+α+3-Determinacy, for α < !1 . This yields a characterization of the levels of L by or at which winning strategies in these games must be constructed. When α = 0, we have the following concise result: the least θ so that all winning strategies 0 in Σ4 games belong to Lθ+1 is the least so that Lθ j= \P(!) exists + all wellfounded trees are ranked". x1. Introduction. Given a set A ⊆ !! of sequences of natural numbers, consider a game, G(A), where two players, I and II, take turns picking elements of a sequence hx0; x1; x2;::: i of naturals. Player I wins the game if the sequence obtained belongs to A; otherwise, II wins. For a collection Γ of subsets of !!, Γ determinacy, which we abbreviate Γ-DET, is the statement that for every A 2 Γ, one of the players has a winning strategy in G(A). It is a much-studied phenomenon that Γ -DET has mathematical strength: the bigger the pointclass Γ, the stronger the theory required to prove Γ -DET. -

Is Shapley Cost Sharing Optimal?∗ (For the special issue in honor of Lloyd Shapley) Shahar Dobzinskiy Aranyak Mehtaz Tim Roughgardenx Mukund Sundararajan{ August 29, 2016 Abstract A general approach to the design of budget-balanced cost-sharing mechanisms is to use the Shapley value, applied to the given cost function, to define payments from the players to the mechanism. Is the corresponding Shapley value mechanism \optimal" in some sense? We consider the objective of minimizing worst-case inefficiency subject to a revenue constraint, and prove results in three different regimes. 1. For the public excludable good problem, the Shapley value mechanism minimizes the worst-case efficiency loss over all truthful, deterministic, and budget-balanced mechanisms that satisfy equal treatment. This result follows from a characteriza- tion of the Shapley value mechanism as the unique one that satisfies two additional technical conditions. 2. For the same problem, even over a much more general mechanism design space that allows for randomization and approximate budget-balance and does not im- pose equal treatment, the worst-case efficiency loss of the Shapley value mecha- nism is within a constant factor of the minimum possible. ∗The results in Sections 3{5 appeared, in preliminary form, in the extended abstract [8]. Procacciae 1.1 Computational Social Choice at a Glance Social choice theory is the field of scientific inquiry that studies the aggregation of individual preferences towards a collective choice. For example, social choice theorists|who hail from a range of different disciplines, including mathematics, economics, and political science|are interested in the design and theoretical evalu- ation of voting rules. Questions of social choice have stimulated intellectual thought for centuries. Over time the topic has fascinated many a great mind, from the Mar- quis de Condorcet and Pierre-Simon de Laplace, through Charles Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland), to Nobel Laureates such as Kenneth Arrow, Amartya Sen, and Lloyd Shapley. Computational social choice (COMSOC), by comparison, is a very young field that formed only in the early 2000s. There were, however, a few precursors. For instance, David Gale and Lloyd Shapley's algorithm for finding stable matchings between two groups of people with preferences over each other, dating back to 1962, truly had a computational flavor. And in the late 1980s, a series of papers by John Bartholdi, Craig Tovey, and Michael Trick showed that, on the one hand, computational complexity, as studied in theoretical computer science, can serve as a barrier against strategic manipulation in elections, but on the other hand, it can also prevent the efficient use of some voting rules altogether. Around the same time, a research group around Bernard Monjardet and Olivier Hudry also started to study the computational complexity of preference aggregation procedures. -

Some allocation problems are solved by the price system: high wages attract workers into a particu- lar occupation, and high energy prices induce consumers to conserve energy. In many instances, however, using the price system would encounter legal and ethical objections. Consider, for instance, the allocation of public-school places to children, or the allocation of human organs to patients who need transplants. Furthermore, there are many markets where the price system operates but the traditional assumption of perfect competition is not even approximately satis…ed. In particular, many goods are indivisible and het- erogeneous, whereby the market for each type of good becomes very thin. How these thin markets allocate resources depends on the institutions that govern transactions. This year’s prizewinning work encompasses a theoretical framework for analyzing resource allocation, as well as empirical studies and actual redesign of real-world institutions such as labor-market clearinghouses and school ad- missions procedures. The foundations for the theoretical framework were laid in 1962, when David Gale and Lloyd Shapley published a mathematical inquiry into a certain class of allocation problems. -

Noncooperative game is used to get the equilibrium solutions from each payoff matrix. From the solutions, the values then be used as characteristic functions of Shapley value solution concept in cooperative game. In this paper, the sectors are divided into three groups where each sector will have three different stocks for the game. This study used the companies that listed in Bursa Malaysia and the prices of each stock listed in this research obtained from Datastream. The rate of return of stocks are considered as an input to get the payoff from each stock and its coalition sectors. The value of game for each sector is obtained using Shapley value solution concepts formula to find the optimal increase of the returns. The Shapley optimal portfolio, naive diversification portfolio and market portfolio performances have been calculated by using Sharpe ratio. -

In particular we mainly study the Stable Marriage problem (sm), the Hospitals / Residents problem (hr) and the Student / Project Allo- cation problem (spa), and some of their variants. In some of these problems the aim is to find a stable matching which is one that admits no blocking pair. A blocking pair with respect to a matching is a pair of agents that prefer to be matched to each other than their assigned partners in the matching if any. -
3 Nobel Laureates to Honor UCI's Duncan Luce
3 Nobel laureates to honor UCI’s Duncan Luce January 25th, 2008 by grobbins Three recent winners of the Nobel Prize in economics will visit UC Irvine today and Saturday to honor mathematician-psychologist Duncan Luce, who shook the economics world 50 years ago with a landmark book on game theory. Game theory is the mathematical study of conflict and interaction among people. Luce and his co-author, Howard Raiffa, laid out some of the most basic principles and insights about the field in their book, “Games and Decisions: Introductions and Critical Survey.” That book, and seminal equations Luce later wrote that helped explain and predict a wide range of human behavior, including decision-making involving risk, earned him the National Medal of Science, which he received from President Bush in 2005. (See photo.) UCI mathematican Don Saari put together a celebratory conference to honor both Luce and Raiffa, and he recruited some of the world’s best-known economic scientists. It’s one of the largest such gatherings since UCI hosted 17 Nobel laureates in October 1996. “Luce and Raiffa’s book has been tremendously influential and we wanted to honor them,” said Saari, a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Luce said Thursday night, “This is obviously very flattering, and it’s amazing that the book is sufficiently alive that people would want to honor it.” The visitors scheduled to attended the celebratory conference include: Thomas Schelling, who won the 2005 Nobel in economics for his research on game theory Roger Myerson and Eric Maskin, who shared the 2007 Nobel in economics for their work in design theory. -

Matching with Externalities Marek Pycia and M. Bumin Yenmez* June 2021 Abstract We incorporate externalities into the stable matching theory of two-sided markets. Ex- tending the classical substitutes condition to markets with externalities, we establish that stable matchings exist when agent choices satisfy substitutability. We show that substi- tutability is a necessary condition for the existence of a stable matching in a maximal- domain sense and provide a characterization of substitutable choice functions. In addition, we extend the standard insights of matching theory, like the existence of side-optimal sta- ble matchings and the deferred acceptance algorithm, to settings with externalities even though the standard fixed-point techniques do not apply. 1 Introduction Externalities are present in many two-sided markets. For instance, couples in a labor market pool their resources as do partners in legal or consulting partnerships.
