Jie to ir neband ė neigti. Šis ryšys ypatingas savo laisve ir įsipareigojimais be oficialum ų. Prasminiai žodžiai: Jean Paul Sartre‘as, Simone de Beauvoir, b ūtis Kitam, Kitas, santykis su Kitu, objektas, subjektas . 3 Summary Two chosen French philosophers Jean - Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir describes in detail the problem of understanding of the Other. They both have similar, but at the same time also very different solutions to this problem. The topic of this paper is to review their ideas about relationship with the Other and to compare it. Sartre distinguishes two modes of consciousness – being-in-itself and being-for-itself. The latter is related to the self and self-awareness, which is impossible without the Other. Therefore, being-for-itself is impossible without being-for-others. Sartre presents the Other as necessary to me, to my perception of myself, but at the same time as the enemy, denying me. The situation is shown by such negative examples as shame or anger. I perceive the Other as an object, but he, himself being the subject, perceives me as an object and in such way he tries to take away my subjectivity. Sartre in philosophy of the Other emphasizes struggle and conflict, a closed circle in which each seeks to remain a single subject and tries to change the Other to be the object. Beauvoir agrees with Sartre that a man can not understand himself without the Other. She complements Sartre‘s perception of the Other, telling that woman is always the one who is formed as the Other in our society. She describes the negative aspects of it, and also propose a decision how to get out of this wheel of conflict represented by Sartre. Beauvoir solution is reciprocal understanding and recognition of Others freedom and subjectivity. Understanding of the Other as a competitor in Sartre‘s philosophy, in Beauvoir philosophy is changed to understanding the Other as the one who supplements my own understanding of the world. Sartre and Beauvoir had a long time mutual relationship, they both did a great influence to each other, and they do not deny it. This relationship is special because of its freedom and of its obligations, without official commitments. In this influence they have created their different philosophies. In this work I present the ideas of Sartre as exclusively male thoughts, and the ideas of Beauvoir - as exclusively female thoughts. Men goal is to become the absolute subject, to rule, to win, and the woman's goal is to adapt to the world, to reconcile, to live in peace. In my point of view, Sartre presents the fighting idea in relationship with the Other and Beauvoir tries to find the ways how to end that struggle and to live in harmony with the Other. She encourages to change the negative perception of the Other, as well as woman's perception as the Other, encourages to spread the female discourse, the one which will not outweigh the male discourse, but the one which will complement it and change it, in the same way as she is complementing and changing aspects in the philosophy of Sartre. Key words: Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, being-for-Other, the Other, the relationship with the Other, object, subject . 4 ĮVADAS Kasdien išgyvenu daugyb ę santyki ų su Kitu. Gender and Geopolitics in the Eurovision Song Contest Introduction Catherine Baker Lecturer, University of Hull [email protected] http://www.suedosteuropa.uni-graz.at/cse/en/baker Contemporary Southeastern Europe, 2015, 2(1), 74-93 Contemporary Southeastern Europe is an online, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary journal that publishes original, scholarly, and policy-oriented research on issues relevant to societies in Southeastern Europe. For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.contemporarysee.org Introduction: Gender and Geopolitics in the Eurovision Song Contest Catherine Baker* Introduction From the vantage point of the early 1990s, when the end of the Cold War not only inspired the discourses of many Eurovision performances but created opportunities for the map of Eurovision participation itself to significantly expand in a short space of time, neither the scale of the contemporary Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) nor the extent to which a field of “Eurovision research” has developed in cultural studies and its related disciplines would have been recognisable. In 1993, when former Warsaw Pact states began to participate in Eurovision for the first time and Yugoslav successor states started to compete in their own right, the contest remained a one-night-per- year theatrical presentation staged in venues that accommodated, at most, a couple of thousand spectators and with points awarded by expert juries from each participating country. Between 1998 and 2004, Eurovision’s organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and the national broadcasters responsible for hosting each edition of the contest expanded it into an ever grander spectacle: hosted in arenas before live audiences of 10,000 or more, with (from 2004) a semi-final system enabling every eligible country and broadcaster to participate each year, and with (between 1998 and 2008) points awarded almost entirely on the basis of telephone voting by audiences in each participating state.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.
