2018-2019 Annual Report Annual Report2018 - 2019 Letter From the Board Chair Board of Directors 2018-2019 I’m humbled to have the honor of leading Benilde-St. Margaret's as the new Board of Directors Chair as we enter Corrina Colwell Conley '79 the 2019-2020 academic year. As I reflect on this past year, Meghan Lind DesLauriers ’99, Secretary it is difficult to imagine the school being in a better position than we are. Adam Ehrmantraut, Ed.D, President Susan Eich In January 2019, we completed Phase I of our Imagine. Inspire. Brother Michael Fehrenbach, FSC Innovate. capital campaign. The new space opened to our Red Sheila Folkestad Knight community, just in time for the second semester of the Maureen Grazzini '86 year. The Atrium, an amphitheater-style collaboration space, and three new, state of the art, science labs are awe-inspiring and have invigorated an already strong sense of community within our school. Father James Liekhus '97 Tom Lynch '85 In February, our Board adopted our new strategic plan: Rich History. Radiant Future. The plan is built Nadia Martyn '05 upon four core pillars - Exceptional Academics, Being Catholic in the World, Vibrant Community, Jason Matz and Investing in the Future. Fran McCloskey, Treasurer Penny Meier The fiscal year ended in June with a strong enrollment pipeline and generous donor support—both Biz McShane Murphy '96 key financial drivers. We have sound financial management and clear goals for the future. With the settlement of the Archdiocese bankruptcy case in 2019, we were offered a unique opportunity to acquire Sister Joan Mitchell, CSJ the land on which our school was built. I’m proud to report that Benilde-St. Margaret’s now operates as a Jeff Olejnik '86 completely independent financial entity. We are in a position of strength. Laura Portz Ann Ruff '73 Our enrollment is remarkably strong, with wait pools in five of our six grades as we looked to Mark Scherer '86 the start of the 2019-2020 school year. As many Catholic high schools around the country are struggling to attract students, our Twin Cities community continues to value the exceptional John Theisen '06 education and spiritual foundation BSM provides. We continue to be a school where everyone is Jim Vogl, Vice-Chair welcome. To support that goal, your generous gifts fund tuition assistance for 20% of our students, John Vonhof '86 totaling approximately $1.7 million in support. On behalf of our entire community, thank you. Your Shay Wyley, Chair time and treasures bridge the gap between our tuition revenue and the cost of our programs. Looking forward, we are excited to launch Phase II of our Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. capital campaign. This second phase will focus on a new center for innovation, discovery, and collaborative Table of Contents learning. Our teachers are already engaged in curriculum enhancements, with a focus on our ability to provide a relevant learning experience to our students for the future. Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. • 1968 Soit Le Troisième Concours Eurovision Organisé Par La B.B
Lieu : Royal Albert Hall de Londres Orchestre : Norrie Paramor’s ( Royaume-Uni ). Orchestra. Présentation : Katie Boyle. Date : Samedi 6 Avril.

  • The Eurovision Years
THE EUROVISION YEARS The North West’s love affair with the Eurovision Song Contest began in Vienna, Austria, in 1967 when Phil Coulter, with his writing partner Scot Bill Martin, composed Puppet on a String for Sandy Shaw. The song won and the local connection with the contest began. The following year they nearly completed the double when, at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Cliff Richard performed their latest composition Congratulations. Unfortunately, the song came second, but both songs went on to sell millions of records worldwide. In Amsterdam in 1970, a local girl called Rosemary Brown, better known as Dana, won the Eurovision with All Kinds of Everything. The Phil Coulter song was arranged by Phil Coulter and went on to be a number one hit all over Europe. Charlie Sherrard and Josef Locke were two great Irish tenors of their era. Charlie was born and raised in William Street, Sandi Shaw a stone’s throw from Thundering Down, the street where Josef Locke was born and raised as Joseph McLaughlin. Charlie’s son, Sean Sherrard, followed in his father’s footsteps. Sean took the stage name Johnny Logan and in 1980 composer Shay Healey wrote What’s Another Year which Johnny performed in The Hague in the Netherlands. The song went on to win and launched Johnny Logan onto the international music scene. The following year the contest was held in Dublin and the group Sheeba represented Ireland. Local girl Frances Campbell was a member of the all- girl trio. Sheeba came fifth that year, finishing behind Bucks Fizz who won Dana with Making Your Mind Up.
