CARRIED RES.#7/12 PRESENTATION: Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Committee Moved by: Rosemary Keenan Seconded by: Doug McRonney RECOMMENDATION THAT the presentation by Janet Horner, Executive Director, Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Committee be received. CARRIED The GTA is home to the second largest food processing cluster in North America. Combined with the approximately one million acres of farmland in the Golden Horseshoe, which includes the GTA, Hamilton, Niagara and the Holland Marsh, the area is one of the foremost food and farming clusters in the world. Over the coming months and years, the GTA AAC will continue to work with the newly created Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance to implement the Action Plan. September 20, 2012 Etobicoke-Mimico Watersheds Coalition #4/12 H25 RES.#8/12 CITY OF BRAMPTON – CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES Moved by: Leo O'Brien Seconded by: Adam DeSouza RECOMMENDATION THAT the report regarding the City of Brampton current environmental initiatives be received for information by the Coalition; AND FURTHER THAT the Coalition continue to provide input and support the efforts of the Brampton Environmental Planning Advisory Committee. CARRIED Current strategic projects that are underway and that will be seeking stakeholder or community input include: Brampton Grow Green: Brampton’s vision as a sustainability leader in areas of municipal responsibility related to public health and safety, corporate operations and services, community planning and services, and environmental protection and conservation. Sustainable Community Design Guidelines (SCDG), Phase 1 – will guide the planning and design of sustainable developments at a range of scales from Secondary Plan Areas to large scale community plans (Block Plans or Tertiary and neighbourhood plans) to site plans. SCDG, Phase 2, Measuring the Sustainability of Development – partnering with the City of Vaughan and Town of Richmond Hill, this phase focuses on the preparation of sustainability metrics (i.e., quantitative performance targets that new development applications will be reviewed against as part of the planning process) that quantify, where appropriate, the qualitative principles outlined in the SCDGs. Stormwater Management Retrofit & Enhancement Study – Planning, Design & Development Committee and Works & Transportation departments are preparing a city- wide strategy for retrofitting the City’s existing stormwater management facilities and development lands. The study is to identify opportunities to meet Provincial water quality targets as set out by Provincial policies and guidelines, and explore opportunities to work towards achieving a zero increase in mass loadings of contaminants of concern. Natural Heritage and Environmental Management Strategy (NHEMS) - will define a comprehensive environmental management framework to provide corporate, stakeholder and community direction by identifying goals, objectives and short, medium and long term actions to protect, manage and monitor the City’s Natural Heritage and Open Space Systems, Urban Forest and Green Infrastructure. Lakeshore Blvd In Etobicoke, at the present-day site of Marie Creek Curtis Park, it changed the very landscape when floodwaters came crashing through a housing Etobicoke Creek development located at the mouth of Etobicoke Creek. Over 56 cottages and houses were destroyed, 365 people left homeless and seven people died. The first permanent residents on the sand bars, or Etobicoke Flats, were Captain Oates and his wife, who built a cottage in 1921. By the late 1940s, at least 277 families were living in Marie Curtis Park, and the mouth of Etobicoke Creek at the Lake Ontario waterfront today (left) and in 1946 after a spring flood (above). this part of Long Branch. CCFEW (Citizens Concerned about the Future of the Etobicoke Waterfront) is a community, non-profit organization seeking to promote a healthy waterfront, preservation and expansion of parkland, citizen engagement and compatible development within our community. In 1997, we published a report, “Toward the Ecological Restoration of South Etobicoke”, still available online which contains many observations and recommendations still relevant to this study. We recently received the Urban Hero Award from the Etobicoke Guardian and have a long history of working with the City and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority towards these goals. In general, CCFEW is highly supportive of this initiative and appreciates the efforts being made by the City of Toronto. We understand that a number of solutions ranging from Wet Ponds to Storage Tanks to High Rate Treatment facilities are being considered. As an environment group representing south Etobicoke we are supportive of more natural processes rather than engineered solutions.     CITY CLERK Clause embodied in Report No. 2 of the Etobicoke Community Council, as adopted by the Council of the City of Toronto at its meeting held on April 14, 15 and 16, 2003. 9 Appointments to the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee and the Mimico Village Business Improvement Area (City Council on April 14, 15 and 16, 2003, adopted this Clause, without amendment.) The Etobicoke Community Council recommends that the resignation of Councillor Peter Milczyn, Ward 5 – Etobicoke-Lakeshore, from the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee and the Mimico Business Improvement Area be accepted and further, that the vacancies not be filled during the current term of Council. The Etobicoke Community Council submits the following communication (February 17, 2003) from the City Clerk, Nominations and Appointments: The City Clerk has received the attached communication (December 30, 2002) from Councillor Peter Milczyn, Ward 5 – Etobicoke-Lakeshore, submitting his resignation from the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee and the Mimico Village Business Improvement Area (BIA). The composition of the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee includes Councillor Irene Jones, Ward 6 – Etobicoke-Lakeshore, and may include up to one other Member from the Etobicoke Community Council. The composition of the Mimico Village BIA, as prescribed in the Municipal Act, includes at least one Member of Council, and Councillor Jones is appointed. Accordingly, it is not necessary to replace Councillor Milczyn on either of these bodies for the remainder of the term of office ending November 30, 2003. However, as Members are appointed until their successors are appointed, Etobicoke Community Council may wish to recommend to Council that the resignation of Councillor Milczyn from the Assembly Hall Advisory Committee and the Mimico Village BIA be accepted, and refrain from recommending a replacement for Councillor Milczyn.
