    Unspunnenfest zusätzli Das Unspunnenfest in Interlaken ist ein Trachten- und Alphirtenfest, gestaltet von den grossen Schweizer Brauchtumsverbänden, der Schweizerischen Trachten- vereinigung, dem Eidgenössischen Schwingerverband, dem Eidgenössischen Jodlerverband und dem Verband Schweizer Volksmusik. Zusammen mit ihren kantonal- bernischen Mitgliederverbänden präsentieren sie Stein- stossen, Schwingen, Alphornklänge, Volksmusik, Trach- tentänze, Jodellieder und Naturjodel. Der Umzug am Sonntagvormittag des Festes ist eine Art «Parade der Schweizerischen Volkskultur». Seit 1946 findet das Fest regelmässig im Rhythmus von ungefähr zwölf Jahren statt. Die Tradition geht jedoch auf das beginnende 19. Jahrhundert zurück. Die ersten beiden Unspunnenfeste wurden 1805 und 1808 im Nachzug der Helvetik als Schweizer Alphirtenfest von vier Patriziern der Stadt Bern angeregt, um den Stadt- Land-Gegensatz zu überbrücken. Diese Feste gelten zudem als Initialzündung für den modernen Tourismus Andere Namen Schweizerisches Trachten- und Alphirten- im Berner Oberland, für die Wiederbelebung des Alp- fest Unspunnen horns und ein steigendes Interesse an Volksliedern. Bis Verbreitung BE (Interlaken) heute hat das Unspunnenfest grosse Ausstrahlung und eine besondere symbolische Bedeutung. For providing a broad and exact overview, the origins of the various athletic disciplines of the ethnic sports competitions in question will also be considered. In the Scottish case, the primary question here is in how far Highland Games are still genuinely Gaelic or whether they have ever been thus, and whether there are any Highland Games that are true to the pre-nineteenth century origins of most athletic disciplines featured. In the Swiss case, it will be shown that the originally staged herdsfolk games have indeed been accepted by the wider Swiss German community and are today largely arranged for locals and less so for tourists, though the latter are welcome.

    EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MUSICOLOGY ___________________________________________ ISSN 2504-1916 VOL. 18/1 (2019), 138–159 doi: 10.5450/EJM.18.1.2019.138 Environmental Perception and Activism through Performance: Alpine Song and Sound Impressions Britta Sweers n the summer of 2012, Swiss newspapers, radio, and TV news featured a remarkable story: The inhabitants of the Valois village Fiesch, known as a tourist gateway to the glacial environment of the Aletsch region, were finally allowed to pray the first prayers for the growth of the Aletschgletscher I 1 (“Aletsch Glacier”). Located in the eastern Bernese Alps, the Aletschgletscher, with a length of 22.75 kilometers (approximately fourteen miles), is the largest glacier of the European Alps (see also Figure 1). However, as photographs demonstrate, the glacier has been visibly receding in recent decades.2 In 2009, local mountain guide Herbert Volken was received by the Pope to ask for permission for the local community to be relieved from a 340 year-old solemn promise, when, with the blessing of Pope Innozenz XI in 1678, the locals vowed to pray against the growth of the glacier, which had often brought death and destruction to the region, and which was further intensified in the eighteenth century by additional vows, such as abstaining from public dancing.3 This seemingly obscure report paradigmatically reflects the highly complex relation of humans and their environment, and the way that the actual relationship between humans and nature is highly versatile. But as a na- tional legend, the man who helped to drive out Switzerland’s foreign rulers by shooting an apple off his son’s head has perfectly embodied the coun- try’s rather singular approach to independence throughout the ages. PRE-CONFEDERATION Modern Swiss history is regarded as starting in 1291, but people had already been living in the region for thousands of years. The first in- habitants were Celtic tribes, including the Helvetii of the Jura and the A comprehensive Mittelland plain and the Rhaetians near Graubünden. Their homelands overview of the country’s were invaded firstly by the Romans, who had gained a foothold by 58 history, politics and BC under Julius Caesar and established Aventicum (now Avenches) as society is provided by their capital. Then, Germanic Alemanni tribes arrived to drive out the Jonathan Steinberg’s Romans by AD 400. Why Switzerland? The exhibition, organized and curated by Sewanee art professor Julie Püttgen, showcases artists from the Swiss Scherenschnitt (literally: “scissor cutting”) tradition together with contemporary artists working in North America, and considers their responses to human interaction with the natural and man-made environment. Drawing from traditional papercutting techniques, Cutting Fine, Cutting Deep artists create silhouettes, dioramas, paper lacework, pop-up drawings, and complex symmetrical designs. The resulting narratives present striking contrasts and similarities: from Ernst Oppliger’s profound environmental love affair with Swiss pastoral life, to Humberto Duque’s absurdist figures in dismembered landscapes; from Lane Twitchell’s crystalline homages to American ephemera, to Ueli Hofer’s mythical Edens. All of these are linked together by explorations of human interrelationships with the natural and man- made world, as well as by the radically simple starting point of paper and blade.
