“Hello, I always enjoy glo very much, except until this hunting article. I have to keep the picture covered! Beautiful little girl, holding up the head of a beautiful dead deer. Yes, one can say they are with nature; God provided us the means for the food; we need to cull the herds, etc. I can't be convinced how a beautiful deer can be killed and "be with nature" despite using it for food. I grew up on a farm; my dad was a hunter. Hated it then, hate it now. And I even ended up on a rifle team in high school but could never shoot at an animal. Dating a hunter wasn't an option either. The farm animals were all my friends, could never raise and show an animal in 4-H that would end up on someone's plate. Would have felt like a traitor. One can argue there are too many deer. Yes, there are, but we are moving more and more into their territory. The fear of ‘bulking up’ has unnecessarily stopped many women from doing the one thing that will benefit them the most.

january 2013 glo 9 Photo by Barb Sieminski Zianos While holiday shopping the Divas decided it was time to take a lunch break. This put the fond old memories of our in all of us. This lovely Italian eatery has a fresh atmosphere and the service is great. Maury was our server that particular afternoon and did a great job. The Divas can be difficult at times as most Divas can be!

Upon Maury's recommendation, Sandy and I ordered the red pepper soup. Delicious! To accompany the soup we had Jimmy's famous Greek salad. The handmade Italian dressing set this salad apart from other Greek salads. Of course we had the fresh baked bread sticks brushed with garlic butter and parmesan. The dipping sauces consisted of cheese, marinara, garlic butter or alfredo and the Divas Neighborhood Health Clinics, Inc. had some of each. All were wonderful with the warm bread. Quality, Convenience & Close to Home We all chose pasta dishes that afternoon. The traditional spaghetti tossed in meat sauce and topped with hand rolled meatballs was very good. The lasagna was layered with sliced meatballs, ricotta, ‡ Family Medical Care mozzarella and meat sauce. The flavor was wonderful. We also ordered the fettuccini Alfredo. Oh was that ever rich and good. It is ‡ Women’s Health homemade Alfredo sauce tossed with fettuccini and seasoned with ‡ Prenatal garlic and black pepper and Parmesan. We have been friends for 45 years and are all retired. We all went to North Side High School and grew up in the same neighborhood. Now that our families are grown and moved out, we have a lot of spare time on our hands and like to eat out as opposed to cooking. Two of us have owned our own businesses and see the small business owner really struggling with the economy the way it is. So we thought we would eat at the small- er, family-owned restaurants instead of the big chains and fast food places. We have laughed at ourselves many times and referred to each other as "professional foodies." To contact the Divas, send an email to [email protected].

In 2011, she began nutrition consulting and became a cer- tified personal trainer. Though she doesn’t consider herself an expert, she is well on her way as she contin- ues her education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In addition to sugar, as Reilly mentions, Keiser says it’s a good idea to avoid processed foods, trans fats, chemical additives and preservatives, all of which make it tougher for your body to function optimally and fight off infection.

Keiser agrees with many of Reilly’s top immunity-boosting foods and adds mushrooms, oysters and yogurt.

1. Mushrooms: A mix of mushrooms, including the common button mushroom you find at the grocery store, may help enhance immune response and function. The polysac- charides in mushrooms have been shown to have antiviral, antibacterial, and believe it or not, anti-tumor properties. Mushrooms are also a fairly good source of vitamin D, which plays an important part in immune function, but is difficult to obtain through diet.

2. Oysters: Oysters are incredibly high in zinc. Zinc plays a critical role in immune function. It's important for normal cell develop- ment, reproduction, and healing. It helps to increase the body's white blood cell count and has been shown to decrease the incidence of infection in the elderly. Depending on the variety, oysters can contain as much as 180 milligrams of zinc per 100 gram serving.

3. Greek Yogurt: Yogurt contains pro- biotics, which help keep the digestive system balanced and functioning well. Since the gut is where 70 percent of the immune system is located, digestive health is crucial to maintain- ing a healthy immune system. Lena Yarian | Junior Achievement President

When Lena Yarian was in high school, she worked as a waitress every weekday morning before class. Doing so taught her a lot about people and that “if you really want something, you can figure out how to get it done,” she says. In college at IPFW, Yarian worked in retail and continued to gain appreciation for all types of people. “I am very lucky to have had both of these experiences,” she says of her early work experience. “I have had great mentors in all my jobs.” These experiences led her to her current position as president of Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, where she helps to serve 25 counties with more than 4,000 volunteers and more than 2,500 educators to reach 105,000 students. “I have a wonderful staff and a terrific board of directors, which makes my jobs fun and much easier,” she says. “I very much enjoy the daily challenges of the job and the many wonderful people I have the opportunity to work with each day.” Yarian says the biggest challenge of her position is trying to anticipate how and what needs to change in the coming future. When she isn’t working, Yarian attends her 16-year-old daughter’s basketball and softball games and visits with her 19-year-old son, who attends IPFW. She enjoys running (five nights a week) and yoga when she can squeeze it into her schedule.

Ask Don Wismer what his career is, and you will get a calliope of answers including: criminal investigator for the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, advocate for youth programs (founder of the Dare Summer Extreme Adventures program for inner city fifth grade students) and associate pastor at Aldersgate Church. One common thread throughout Wismer’s life experiences is helping others, and learning some life lessons from the women in his life about ethics, integrity and strength. “My mother was a huge influence in my life. I can remember at least one incidence where she was given a more expensive sandwich at a drive thru, and went back to pay the difference. She taught me a lot about honesty and personal integrity. My wife has been a huge impact in my life as well. Mimi is a captain and 26-year veteran of the Fort Wayne Fire Department. She is a force to be reckoned with (a good force that is). She has the unique ability to be as tough as nails when necessary, but can also display a beautiful grace and compassion for people who are hurt- ing.” The challenge of entering the ministry was huge for Wismer. His outreach programs include: “God on Tap,” a bar discussion group, “The Connexion,” a church service in a bar and “Lifetree Café,” church in a coffee house. “I have learned over time that just being present with someone during their times of crisis as well as during their times of success is meaningful for them. But does it really work?

“The attraction was so strong that I decided to cancel the other dates.” – Stephanie Essex, who met her significant other of two years, Joe Coleman, through online dating site Zoosk.com.

Cyber Success Local girl Stephanie Essex met her significant other Joe Coleman a little over two years ago on Zoosk.com. It was the first time she had used an online dating service, but he had a profile on Eharmony.com for a month prior to try- ing Zoosk. Both said that their profiles were only up a few weeks before they met one another and although Essex was talking to several men on the site, Coleman was the first one she agreed to meet in the “real world.”

“The attraction was so strong that I decided to cancel the other dates,” she says.

Essex says because she’s not into the bar scene, she needed to find a way to meet a diverse group of people in a safe environment. She says she discovered that you could tell a lot about a person by the way they fill out their profile and while there were some men who came on pret- ty strong, all in all it was a great experience. “A perk is the fact that people put their likes and dislikes right on the screen as opposed to the poking and prodding you have to do when you meet someone for the first time,”

January is a natural time to start thinking about goals for the New Year. Like many people, your New Year’s resolutions may include health-related goals like eating healthier and getting more exercise. Having a plan to achieve these goals is crucial to success. The National Weight Control Registry looks at char- acteristics of individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight and kept it off for a long period of time. They found that 98 percent of them modified their food intake in some way and 94 percent increased their physical activity. Key lifestyle changes were also observed in successful individuals. Start with a plan that includes every critical component to reach your goals: diet, exercise and motivation. Educate yourself about the nutritional values of food. Begin an exercise program that includes cardiovascular exercise with strength training to burn stored body fat and increase lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolism. Seek out someone who will hold you accountable as you travel on this journey. Eating meals and snacks that contain lean protein, healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats keep your energy levels up. Eat breakfast to get your day off to great start. Regular meals and snacks keep your metabolism revved up all day long, so plan on eating three meals and two snacks each day. Journal every- thing you eat and be prepared to show it to that one person who is holding you accountable. You can lose weight faster and healthier by choosing certain types of food. Seek out a meal plan that is researched based and nutritionally sound. Increasing your physical activity will increase your body’s need for energy, resulting in an increase of metabolism. This means your body will be better equipped to break down food for energy and burning calories. Find a workout buddy who will help you stay committed to your exercise routine. Pole dancing offers a great Once reserved for strip clubs, pole dancing has become a trendy form of exercise that has moved out of seedy bars and into the mainstream. From recent moms to grandmothers and teachers to accountants, women of all backgrounds are hitting upper body workout the poles to build their muscles, tone their bodies and improve their balance, coordi- nation and flexibility. “I taught myself how to dance watching videos on YouTube and breaking it down to its basic elements,” says Danielle Carroll, the pole dancing instructor at Boudior Noir-North in Fort Wayne. “It’s a very demanding discipline that literally works every inch of your body.” Though she has only been teaching for a few months, she says her students are thrilled to discover that they don’t need platform heels, skimpy outfits or a lot of upper body strength to get started. The typical student wears sweatpants or shorts along with a tank top and walking sneakers and can expect to learn how to use their muscles in new and provocative ways, all at a pace the student is comfortable with. “While you can’t escape the sensual and sexual side of pole dancing, there are so many levels to it and we really try to give it more of an athletic feel by adding repeti- tions to basic elements so that when it comes time for a more difficult movement like an inversion, they will be ready,” she says. It’s a great workout Brittany Atwood has been in Carroll’s class for five weeks and says she was looking for a fun new way to exercise that would strengthen her core muscles. She recently learned to climb the pole and said that it’s not as easy as it looks. “It literally works every muscle in your body including those you don’t think you have,” she says. “The nice thing about pole dancing is that you can change it up every day.” Atwood is engaged and is currently looking for a home where she can install a pole of her own to practice on in her spare time. She says it’s never boring, and as for her fiancé’s opinion of her new workout regimen… “It doesn’t bother him one bit!” she says. Not what you think! Brittney Shepherd is quick to say that she has never taken a dance class, has no intention of becoming an exotic dancer and is far from the athletic type, but thought pole dancing would be a fun workout that would keep her from getting stuck in a routine. “There are people who think pole dancing is all strippers and nudity, but it’s not like that,” she says. “It really builds your muscles and it takes a lot of strength, dedication and practice to get it right.” Though she has only been in the class one month, she is quick to tell her friends about her experience and encourage them to give it a try. “Everyone gets the wrong impression at first, but believe me, there is nothing sexy about the moves when you are just starting out. It’s just fun.”

Less is more when it comes to the All-New Nissan Altima.® Our 2013 models feature weight-reducing materials like aluminum hoods and high-strength steel to increase MPG, and an improved CVT to achieve lower rpm at higher speeds. The innovation doesn’t stop there; 70% of our sedans and crossovers now receive 31 MPG HWY* or better. The most innovative Altima ever rings in Nissan’s most innovative year.
