The paper analyzes the specific forms these policy areas are assuming in Vietnam, and the underlying political forces (both internal and external) driving policy implementation. An examination of how these policies are currently integrated and balanced follows. The analysis shows that contrary to government pronouncements, development patterns are unlikely to be altered toward more sustainable ends under existing institutions and laws. Finally, the article discusses the potential for integrating current policies to achieve sustainability goals. Introduction and Background The challenge of "sustainable development" is to overcome conflicts between economic development, environmental protection, and social equity concerns. This paper presents a case study of one country's attempts to integrate and balance policy objectives that promote sustainable development. Changes underway in Vietnam, while unique in many ways, are relevant to other developing countries attempting to industrialize while competing in the global economy. Vietnam's transition to a market economy is driven by global political-economic changes as well as internal demands for economic development.

The authors of the text in question, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski, are self-confessed Frasier fans with a background in different ambits of cultural study (the former as editor of the “Ages of Superheroes” essay series and author of X-Men and the Mutant Metaphor: Race and Gender in the Comic Books and the latter having researched the history of decorative arts and design). Above all, they share a mutual appreciation for all things Crane. From a structural perspective, the book is divided into two parts: “Part I: Making A Classic” and “Part II: Under Analysis”. Each section is further subdivided into four separate topics. The first deals with: the evolution of Cheers to the emergence of Frasier Crane; the story behind the eclectic cast; character profiles of Frasier, Niles, Martin and Eddy; and finally, a discussion of Daphne and Roz. The second part, as the name suggests, is more academically inclined with chapters examining ongoing character development in the Crane household; an in-depth look at Frasier’s apartment from structural and aesthetic perspectives, as well as in contrast to Niles’s home at the Montana; an analysis of set decoration, particularly chairs; and lastly, the representation of women, gender and race.

During the four exhibit days, over 50,000 people gathered in Pink Hill Park to remember loved ones, share their experiences with others and learn more about the Vietnam War era. The event registered over 2,000 Vietnam Veterans for their choice of a commemorative medal, lapel pin or patch to thank them for their service to our country. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs registered over 160 new veterans for benefits and the “Put a Face With a Name” campaign collected 123 photos during the event. Birkhold Jared Gardner Elizabeth Hewitt 1 Copyright by Katharine Elizabeth McCain 2020 2 Abstract This dissertation, Today Your Barista Is: Genre Characteristics in The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe, works to categorize and introduce a heretofore unrecognized genre within the medium of fanfiction: The Coffee Shop Alternate Universe (AU). Building on previous sociological and ethnographic work within Fan Studies, scholarship that identifies fans as transformative creators who use fanfiction as a means of promoting progressive viewpoints, this dissertation argues that the Coffee Shop AU continues these efforts within a defined set of characteristics, merging the goals of fanfiction as a medium with the specific goals of a genre. These characteristics include the Coffee Shop AU’s structure, setting, archetypes, allegories, and the remediation of related mainstream genres, particularly the romantic comedy. The purpose of defining the Coffee Shop AU as its own genre is to help situate fanfiction within mainstream literature conventions—in as much as that’s possible—and laying the foundation for future close reading. This work also helps to demonstrate which characteristics are a part of a communally developed genre as opposed to individual works, which may assist in legal proceedings moving forward. However, more crucially this dissertation serves to encourage the continued, formal study of fanfiction as a literary and cultural phenomenon, one that is beginning to closely analyze the stories fans produce alongside the fans themselves.

Stern 1 The Consumer, The Character and The Consumed: The Three Cs Model of Product Placement Effects ... product placements act as implied celebrity endorsements. Whatever an actor is seen using or driving is seen as a statement of preference and choice (Marshall, 2001, www.normmarshall.com). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of product placements in television serial comedies on consumer attitudes. We draw from Heider's balance theory (1946, 1958) to explain the attitudinal effects of placed products on consumers in terms of a triadic relationship between consumer viewers of a sitcom, characters in it, and products that the characters use. The theory, originally developed in social psychology, was based on the assumption that humans have a preference for harmonious situations in which the relations in a triad composed of a person, another person, and an object is balanced when "all three of the relations are positive or when two of the relations are negative and one is positive" (Heider 1958, p. 202). Heider (1958) and later Osgood and Tannenbaum (1955) identified two types of relations (1958): liking refers to a person’s degree of positive or negative evaluation of something or someone and unit refers to the level of association between a person and another person or object, based, for example, on similarity, causality or ownership. A basic assumption of this theory is that liking relations and unit relations are mutually interdependent and tend toward a balanced state.

Many of the performers, audience members, volunteers and other supporters of this effort continue to be involved with music and with each other—effectively forming complex interwoven networks of people and communities that connect Plowshares with other music communities in the past and the present. This thesis focuses, in particular, on Plowshares as a place of music making that built and nurtured community and contributes to an expanding literature about places of music making that build community and function as community centers. Ideally, this research will provide a foundation for deeper investigation of music communities in the future. Approaching the research from the perspectives of music, history, and anthropology (folkloristics and ethnography), the data collection and analysis employed an emic, or insider, perspective. Informal ethnographic interviews, oral history interviews, and an online survey provided first-hand information on how different people experienced Plowshares. Ongoing participation in contemporary music communities helped reveal additional information and insights about Plowshares, its operation, and its influences. The San Francisco Folk Music Club's newsletter, the folknik, provided information on the concert schedules, vision, development, and challenges of Plowshares. The San Francisco Folk Music Center's organizational papers—particularly the meeting minutes—provided detail on how the organization operated.

Here are some ps for picking out the perfect tree. The way to obtain the freshest tree is to harvest it yourself at a Christmas tree farm. This way, you are guaranteed a “fresh” tree rather than one that may have been harvested several weeks earlier. If cung your tree is not possible, here are some ways to check for freshness at a Christmas tree sales lot: First, give the tree a light but vigorous shake. Only a few interior needles should fall out of the tree if it is fresh. If a pile of brown needles appears on the ground below the tree, parcularly from the branch ps, it is not a fresh tree. Next, reach into a branch and pull the needles gently through your hand as you move out towards the p. The nee- dle should bend, not break, as your fingers run across them and the break, it is not a fresh tree. Regardless of whether you buy a tree from a lot or cut it yourself, once you get the tree home, leave it outside while you set the tree stand up. The choice of a stand is probably the most crical factor in maintaining the freshness of the tree once in the home. The stand should be able to hold ½ to one gallon of water as your new Christmas tree may absorb up to this amount in the first day.
