On 28th December 1944 a USAAF Boeing B17G Flying Fortress 42-197055 called Choo-Z-Suzy crashed at Garston, near Watford. Based at Th urleigh airfi eld, near Bedford, the fi rst mission on April 18th saw the aircraft drop 42 100lb demolition bombs on Berlin. From that time until the crash, the aircraft took part in 79 missions to 43 destinations over mainland Europe, dropping demolition, fragmentation, incendiary and smoke bombs, not to mention thousands of propaganda leafl ets. Th e crew fl ew deep into the heartland of Germany, as far as Dresden and Munich, and also on raids preparing for D-Day on the beaches of France. But the last mission, Mission 766, involving 1,275 bombers and 606 fi ghter aircraft , was aimed at rail, road, bridges and cities in West Germany. Choo-Z- Suzy was commissioned to target the Koblenz railway yards, dropping eighteen 250 lb demolition bombs and two 500 lb incendiary bombs. Th e aim was to prevent German forces from resupplying their troops who were attacking American ground forces at what became known as the ‘Battle of the Bulge’.
