Inventories such as this often accompanied wills at this date, and are a window into the lives of our ancestors, as they list personal and everyday household items alongside other property. They can exist even where no last will or testament was made. The inventory itself is written in English, though at this date the rest of the wording was still in Latin. A document pertaining to a transfer of a half share in the profits arising from tolls collected for the Sedgley 'Old Line of Road' between Sarah Hall and Abel Fletcher, dated 3rd January 1856. Sarah Hall was the widow of Benjamin Hall, a wheelwright and barrow maker who died in 1851 aged just 39. They had been renting a cottage near the corner of Bilston Street and High Street from Abel Fletcher who had his steam flour mill there. Sarah evidently owned a half share in the interest from the tolls, while Mary Ann Sherwood named in the deed (a relative of Sarah's husband) owned the other half share. -

WOLVERHAMPTON CHRONICLE 1860 to 1869 1 4 January 1860 STAFFORDSHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS STEALING IRON AT SEDGLEY George Hughes, boatman, indicted for stealing 56 lbs of iron, the property of the London and North Western Railway Company, at Sedgley, was found guilty and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. 2 18 January 1860 TIPTON DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE On Tuesday, an inquest was held at Swan Village on the body of Joseph Timmins, a boatman 20 years of age. On the preceding Saturday morning, deceased, in company with a man named William Smith, was on the canal with an empty boat, going to Tipton. When past Dudley Port, and near the canal bridge there, they came to a turn in the course of the canal and, meeting with another boat, a collision ensued between the two. Deceased, who stood up in the end of his own boat, fell into the water, and being able to swim, kept himself afloat until his companion, Smith, had nearly reached the side where he was, but at this moment he sank to the bottom of the canal, overcome, it is supposed, by the effects of the cold. Smith at once got out the body of deceased, and calling for help, a man named Griffiths, in the employ of the Canal Company, came up, and seeing that deceased was insensible, merely blew down his throat. This producing no apparent effect, he said, “I don't see that there's any life in him, and I'll take him to Tipton”. This course was pursued, and after taking the deceased to an office by the canal side, where he was laid still breathing, poor Timmins was conveyed to a public house in Tipton, a distance from this office of more than 300 yards. -

DUNSTON GARDEN VILLAGE, STAFFORDSHIRE INITIAL LANDSCAPE AND VISUAL APPRAISAL NOVEMBER 2019 WRITTEN BY: RK CHECKED BY: KC CLIENT: RIGBY GROUP JOB NUMBER: P19-0308 01 INTRODUCTION 1.1 This Initial Landscape Vision Document and Visual Appraisal has been prepared by Pegasus Group on behalf of Rigby Estates LLP. The report feeds in to and accompanies a document to support the allocation of land around Dunston, Staffordshire as a Garden Village in the second 2km stage of the Local Plan process. 1.2 The location of the site is illustrated in Figure 1. There are five parcels of land that comprise the site shown on the plan opposite. Each parcel has been assigned a letter reference for the purpose of referencing areas of the site clearly throughout the report. 1.3 The appraisal considers the possible effects of the proposed development upon landscape features, landscape character and visual amenity. Given the scale and extent of development along with the context of the surroundings, a 2km study area is considered to be appropriate. 1.4 The findings discovered through both desk-top study and on site assessment work have been used to inform mitigation recommendations and further iterations of the Illustrative Masterplan. A B D C E Figure 1: Site Location 2 DUNSTON GARDEN VILLAGE, STAFFORDSHIRE - INITIAL LANDSCAPE AND VISUAL APPRAISAL - DECEMBER 2019 02 SITE CONTEXT TO STAFFORD 2.1 The site is located adjacent to the small village of Dunston, east of the Coppenhall village of Acton Trussell and north of the market town of Penkridge. The site runs westwards from the River Penk, straddling the M6 (just south of Junction 13), A449, and School Lane.
