  • Spring/Summer 1998 Rector's Corner
Spring/Summer 1998 Rector's Corner Most of the time I use this column to highlight the physical or programmatic improvements that we have been able to complete due to the generosity of you, our benefactors. This time I want to concentrate on the reason for all these temporal blessings, the reason all of you support us: because we are engaged in the sacred and noble enterprise of forming priests after the mind and heart of Christ! Everything we do in the natural order- expansion, renovation, modernization of facilities, scholarships, new programs- is only to help us achieve our single supernatural goal: to prepare men to be faithful, holy, and effective priests. The only way this can happen is to inspire our men to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ. The Holy Father recently remarked to priests, "Love for Jesus and His Church must be the passion of your life. " Simply put, we urge our men so to know, love, and serve Jesus that they actually become one with Him, so united to Him that they will actually act in His Person as a priest. Not only that, but so intimately united are they to Our Lord that they love His Bride, the Church. Heady stuff, all of that, I admit... but this goal of our program of spiritual formation -how is it done? I wish I could explain it succinctly, but that is tough to do! Let me try to put it this way: there is both a programmatic and an atmospheric component to our spiritual formation. Our program offers the method, the way to achieve this passionate love of Christ and His Church: daily Mass, instruction and encouragement in daily prayer, communal morning and evening prayer in the Divine Office, trust in spiritual direction, an annual retreat and periodic days of recollection, emphasis on devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Mother, a reliance on the sacrament of penance, and time honored practices such as spiritual readings and acts of self denial.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II TO THE ALUMNI OF THE PONTIFICAL NORTH AMERICAN COLLEGE Clementine Hall Saturday, 7 November 1992 Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, Dear Brothers in Christ, 1. I am very pleased to welcome the alumni of the Pontifical North American College, together with the Rector, faculty and students of the Seminary on the Janiculum Hill and the student priests of the Casa Santa Maria dell’Umiltà. During this year commemorating the five hundredth anniversary of the first preaching of the Gospel to the peoples of the Americas, you have returned to Rome, where you received the spiritual, doctrinal and pastoral formation which has nourished your own apostolate as ambassadors of Christ (2 Cor. 5:20) and ministers of his Church. In this City, the communis patria of the Catholic faithful, it is appropriate that you give thanks for the abundant harvest of faith and good works reaped in the United States by the generations of priests who have gone before you. It is likewise fitting to beseech the Lord that the Catholics of your country will be granted the grace needed to carry out the new evangelization which is so essential in these last years of the second Christian Millennium (cf. John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio, 44). 2. In the years since 1859, when the Bishops of the United States, at the invitation of Pope Pius IX, first established your College in the old monastery of Our Lady of Humility, the advancement of the Church’s mission in American society has involved meeting ever new challenges and opportunities.

Ubi Episcopus: A Conversation with Donald Cardinal Wuerl in the Fiftieth Anniversary Year of St. Paul Seminary, Pittsburgh Alexander J. Schrenk Ubi episcopus, ibi ecclesia. “Wherever the bishop is, there is the Church.” These words of Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans are intended to make a theological point about the hierarchical unity of the Church. A practical corollary of that spiritual reality, however, is that no one has as broad and deep an experience of a particular local Church – from the administrative and pastoral, fiscal and spiritual – than its bishop. For that reason, when Father Joseph Mele, Father Michael Conway, John Bates, and I met last summer to discuss plans to put together a first-ever, fiftieth-anniversary history of St. Paul Seminary in Crafton, we knew that we needed to have the input of the one man who, better than anyone currently living, has the broadest experience of the institution. That man is His Eminence, Donald Cardinal Wuerl. He was a seminarian for the diocese when the seminary was founded by then Bishop John Wright in 1965, Pittsburgh Seminarian Donald Wuerl he served as its vice-rector and then rector from 1980 until 1985, and he meets Pope Paul VI (1964) oversaw its administration as bishop of the diocese from 1988 until 2006. Source: Alexander Schrenk Because I study at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, I was given the task of interviewing His Eminence. As a cardinal and a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Bishops, he is often in Rome.

The Pontifical North American College Catalog 2017-2018 A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE PONTIFICAL NORTH AMERICAN COLLEGE Early in 1855, His Holiness Pope Pius IX first expressed to members of the American hierarchy his interest in the establishment of a national seminary in Rome for the formation of candidates from the United States, stressing the unique lessons to be learned in Rome: the unity and universality of the Church, the traditions of our faith, and the ministry of the successor of St. Peter. More than four years later, on December 8,1859, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the patroness of the United States of America, Pope Pius IX formally inaugurated the Pontifical North American College on the Via dell'Umilta, a property which the Holy Father himself had given to the bishops of America for the purpose of initiating this seminary. In this sixteenth century former monastery of the Visitation Sisters located in the historical center of Rome, twelve students began their studies. Since that time, these buildings have continued to serve the North American College community, presently as the Casa Santa Maria, a residence for priests who are pursuing graduate studies in theology, scripture or canon law at various pontifical universities in Rome. At present, many countries have national seminaries in Rome which serve both as a house of for- mation and as a residence for the students pursuing theological degrees at one of the major Roman pontifical universities. At first, the students of the North American College attended the Urban College of Propaganda Fidei where seminarians, principally from missionary dioceses, studied.

  • 1 May 2020 Memorial of Saint Joseph the Worker Rome Under Quarantine
1 1 May 2020 Memorial of Saint Joseph the Worker Rome under quarantine Dear family and friends, Pax Christi I received many graces on last Saturday’s pilgrimage to Frascara (the university building, not Frascati, the Italian hill town outside Rome—Magari, as the Italians say, “if only!”). My novice classmate and I began our pilgrimage with Mass concelebrated in the small chapel across from my bedroom in the Palazzo Centrale. We had pranzo in the community refectory—tortellini in brodo (broth), Italian sausages with grilled onions, and Sicilian oranges. We then made our way to the Palazzo Centrale’s massive bronze doors. To open them at any time is always a somewhat solemn act, but most especially last Saturday. As I opened them, I was almost giddy with anticipation. We stood there for a moment just looking out the front door. Then, for the first time in seven weeks, we gingerly exited the building. How odd it felt to step out into the Piazza della Pilotta! Something that I have done innumerable times over the past three decades, and yet on Saturday the experience seemed almost novel. How quiet that sun-bathed piazza was! The only soul in sight was Serge seated in his portico directly across the piazza from the Palazzo Centrale. By mid-May the Roman sun will generate heat so scorching that no pedestrian will want to walk in it—although this year perhaps pedestrians will flock to it in droves—socially distanced droves, of course. But for now, it is still a pleasure to be warmed by the Roman sun’s rays.
