Meinardus, Ph.D.* In spite of deep-seated christological and soteriological dif­ ferences between Orthodox Christianity and Islam, there are some areas in which Christian and Muslim prayer converge which could be the basis of dialogue. In the popular piety of the Egyptians, the Virgin Mary, mother ofJesus, can play the role of mediatrix between Muslims and Christians. The subject is di­ verse and voluminous, so I will limit myself to a few aspects of the theme.Because of my long stay in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, I can describe some of the ways in which a devotion to the Virgin Mary brings together Christians and Muslims. For this purpose, thirteen Annunciations of this period which include that piece of furniture are analyzed, and in passing some inadequate interpretations that have been given about any of these pictorial images are evidenced. To justify our interpretations, we rely on an abundant corpus of texts through which many Fathers and theologians of the Latin Church consider the thalamus concept as an eloquent metaphor for the incarnation of the Son of God as a man in the Virgin Mary’s womb, as well as for her virginal divine maternity. The increasingly complex and detailed images of the Annunciation of the 14th and 15th centuries include almost always some narrative details –such as a stem of lilies,1 a book of prayers, a house in the form of a temple,2 the divine ray of light descending, with the dove of the Holy Spirit, towards the Mary‘s ear,3 or the submissive and demure attitude of the Virgin Mary4—, whose respective symbolism has been highlighted, with greater or lesser success, by numerous experts.

    BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.

    ‘FULL OF GRACE,’ LUTHER’S MARIOLOGY. ‘And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, FULL OF GRACE, the LORD IS WITH THEE...’ (Luke 1.28.) 1. This rendering is one in full agreement with the Greek text, and thus was understood & translated for all the Greek and Latin fathers. Third century Aramaic Peshitta has it so. Wycliffe, Tyndale and Cranmer have it as ‘Full of grace.’ Also Beza’s Reformed Geneva Bible, loved by the Puritans, says ‘might be rendered, ‘ full of favour & gr ace.’ This is not known or received either by contemporary Protestants, including far long ex-Catholic Lutherans. 2. Luther indeed was quite devoted to the Holy Virgin Mary, & retained most of the traditional Marian doctrines which were held then and now by the Western Catholic Church. This is often not well-documented in Protestant biographies of Luther and histories of the 16th century, yet it is undeniably true . It seems to be a natural human tendency for latter-day followers to project back onto the founder of a movement their own prevailing viewpoints. Since Lutheranism today does not possess a very strong Mariology, it is usually assumed that Luther himself had similar opinions. We shall see, upon consulting the primary sources (i.e., Luther's own writing,) that the historical facts are very different. We shall consider, in turn, Luther's position on the various aspects of Marian doctrine. 3. But even worse, so called ‘conservative’ Lutherans still cleave to a sectarian Protestant attitude despising and harming the Holy Theotokos, Mary, the Mother of God.

    THE VIRGIN MARY: A MUSLIM, A PROTESTANT, AND A GODDESS by IVY NICOLE CAMPBELL (Under the Direction of Carolyn Jones Medine) ABSTRACT Examination of The Virgin Mary’s role in Protestant circles and increasing popularity within the denomination of Christianity. This thesis also looks at Mary in texts other than the New Testament. I perform a comparative study of Mary in the Qur’an and the apocryphal text, The Protoevangelium of James . Lastly, I will apply Mary’s function in Goddess Theory to Sue Monk Kidd’s novel, The Secret Lives of Bees . Carroll: A Survey of Recent Mariology A SURVEY OF RECENT MARIOLOGY My customary opening triad (it is said putting things in threes is an Irish custom) consists of Dante, Jelly and the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Consultation report, The One Mediator, the Saints, and Mary. Dante's Divine Comedy is the object of a series of lectures by Jaroslav Pelikan: Eternal Feminines. The chapter on our Lady is lyrical, with the ex­ traordinary appreciation of history and Christian tradition we have learned to expect from Pelikan (Eternal Feminines: Three Theological Allegories in Dante's Paradiso [Rutgers Univ., 1990 ]). Friar of the Order of Preachers, Father Frederick Michael Jelly continues his steady pace of writing and lecturing on our Lady. The Catholic Home Study Institute of Leesburg, Virginia, has just published his correspondence course, the book-length Madonna: Mary in the Catholic Tradition, de­ veloped from his Our Sunday Visitor ( 1986) book of that title, which has itself reached three editions.
