1 Almodóvar’s Self-Fashioning The Economics and Aesthetics of Deconstructive Autobiography Paul Julian Smith There seems little doubt that Almodóvar is now the most successful Spanish filmmaker of all time, whether that success is measured in terms of financial or symbolic capital. With no fewer than eighteen feature films, none of which has failed to turn a profit, and countless honors, including the Prince of Asturias Prize, the Légion d’Honneur, many Goyas and innumerable Césars, two Oscars, and an honorary doctorate at Harvard, his career is unparalleled over some thirty years. His Los abrazos rotos/Broken Embraces (2009) received a rhapsodic review from the chief critic of the New York Times, the most important “gatekeeper” for admission to the select world of art cinema in the United States (Scott 2009). The particular importance of this feature is that it focuses on the construction of an auteurist self for the filmmaker, the theme that will be a main concern of this chapter. The contours of that career, which is of course still developing, remain unclear and cannot be reduced to the established models of film authorship associated with the “classical” auteurs (such as Welles and Rossellini) whom Almodóvar so regularly cites in his own oeuvre. Some sense of this unease comes from the diverse accounts of Almodóvar’s career in different languages on Wikipedia. Thus in the English version, after rapidly dispatching “Early Life,” “Beginnings,” and “Short Films,” the anonymous authors simply enumerate the feature films in order of their appearance (Wikipedia 2010a). The trajectory established is thus purely chronological.

  • Culture Versus Commerce New Strategies for The
Culture versus Commerce New Strategies for the Internationalization of Catalan Cinema Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy At the University of Northampton 2016 Maurici Jiménez © Maurici Jiménez, February 2016. This thesis is copyright material and no quotation from it may be published without proper acknowledgement. Abstract This thesis analyses the potential of Catalan cinema to become a national cinema as the current political climate, with a significant part of the population claiming a Catalan state, indicates the relevance of this examination. Catalan cinema is currently considered a regional cinema, however Catalonia has been defined as a nation with its own language and culture, and therefore Catalan cinema may come to reflect this reality. This work also considers the problems and possibilities for Catalan cinema to attain international impact. This thesis analyzes the distinctions between regional, national and international cinemas in the context of world cinemas and of the relationship between cultural identity and the economic demands of the industry. Some regional cinemas can be seen as national because of the cultural and historic social context in which they develop and this gives them the scope to become international in their own right. The thesis analyzes the policies and international agreements developed to protect the domestic industry against the economic imperatives of a global market, particularly in relation to the predominance of Hollywood films in the international film market and the measures — and theoretical approaches upon which they are based — that nation-states and the European Union undertake to protect their film production and to ensure that it reaches their own audiences, but also is distributed internationally.

  • By Georg Ebers Contents PREFACE
UARDA By Georg Ebers Translated from the German by Clara Bell DEDICATION. Thou knowest well from what this book arose. When suffering seized and held me in its clasp Thy fostering hand released me from its grasp, And from amid the thorns there bloomed a rose. Air, dew, and sunshine were bestowed by Thee, And Thine it is; without these lines from me. Contents PREFACE. In the winter of 1873 I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. The leisure of mind and body required to write it was given me through a long but not disabling illness. In the first instance I intended to elucidate this story—like my "Egyptian Princess"—with numerous and extensive notes placed at the end; but I was led to give up this plan from finding that it would lead me to the repetition of much that I had written in the notes to that earlier work. In the first place they served to explain the text; in the second they were a guarantee of the care with which I had striven to depict the archaeological details in all their individuality from the records of the monuments and of Classic Authors; and thirdly I hoped to supply the reader who desired further knowledge of the period with some guide to his studies.
