Her father was the Nobel prize-winning biochemist and Trinity don, Frederick Gowland Hopkins, and her mother, Jessie Ann, introduced her to museums. After an early declaration that she wanted to be an archaeologist, in 1929 she was one of the first to read for the new Cambridge degree of archaeology and anthropology. She left Newnham College with a first-class degree and an invitation to dig with Dorothy Garrod at Mount Carmel in Palestine. Her experience there, exposing a Neanderthal skeleton, had a marked effect on her, and she returned to this discovery in her prose and poetry. By then she had met another promising archaeologist, Christopher Hawkes, both working on a Roman site near Colchester. In 1933 they married and began what appeared to be a union of mutual interests, with a home in North London. Their only child, Nicolas, was born in 1937, and their first book together, Prehistoric Britain, was published in 1943. -

Introduction
Notes Introduction 1. The choice of literary fiction to the general exclusion of popular fiction is partly because the latter’s response to the Cold War has received some study, but also because study of the topic tends to overemphasise its source material. For example, see LynnDiane Beene paraphrased in Brian Diemert, ‘The Anti- American: Graham Greene and the Cold War in the 1950s’, in Andrew Hammond, ed., Cold War Literature: Writing the Global Conflict (London and New York: Routledge, 2006), p. 213; and David Seed, American Science Fiction and the Cold War: Literature and Film (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1999), p. 192. 2. Caute, Politics and the Novel during the Cold War (New Brunswick and London: Transaction Publishers, 2010), p. 76. 3. Richard J. Aldrich, ‘Introduction: Intelligence, Strategy and the Cold War’, in Aldrich, ed., British Intelligence, Strategy and the Cold War, 1945–51 (London and New York: Routledge, 1992), p. 1. For useful summaries of the different schools of Cold War historiography, see S.J. Ball, The Cold War: An International History, 1947– 1991 (London and New York: Arnold, 1998), pp. 1–4; and Ann Lane, ‘Introduction: The Cold War as History’, in Klaus Larres and Lane, eds, The Cold War: The Essential Readings (Oxford and Malden: Blackwell, 2001), pp. 3–16. 4. Dwight D. Eisenhower quoted in John Lewis Gaddis, The Cold War, new edn (2005; London: Penguin, 2007), p. 123. In the mid-1940s, the US assertion that ‘in this global war there is literally no question, political or military, in which the United States is not interested’ was soon echoed by Vyacheslav Molotov’s claim that ‘[o]ne cannot decide now any serious problems of international relations without the USSR’ (quoted in Paul Kennedy, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers: Economic Change and Military Conflict from 1500 to 2000, new edn (1987; New York: Vintage Books, 1989), p. -

J.B. Priestley's Wars by Neil and Jack Hanson
TRANSCRIPT J.B. Priestley’s Wars by Neil and Jack Hanson The last time I gave a talk about Priestley’s wars was at the Cheltenham literature festival, and two theatrical knights, who were both Priestley devotees, Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Timothy West did the readings from Priestley’s work on that occasion, so no pressure tonight Jack. This book came about because J.B. Priestley's son Tom, who is a very acclaimed film editor in his own right rediscovered, if you like, a cardboard box of Priestley’s letters from the First World War that had been sitting half-forgotten under his bed for 30 or 40 years. They were unpublished letters, and when Tom read them we discussed how we might bring these to the page. He also mentioned to me that the postscripts, the series of hugely influential broadcasts from the Second World War had never been published either in their entirety, one or two being published, but the majority had never been seen. So those became the two poles of the book we were going to write, if you like, Priestley's letters from the trenches in the First World War, and the postscripts he delivered in the Second World War. And as I will looked further into it I discovered that Priestley's War writings extended right throughout his life, right up to the last days of his life, if you like, when he was one of the principle driving forces and co-founders of the campaign for nuclear disarmament. So that was the arc, as they say, the journey, the personal Odyssey of John Boynton Priestley that we wanted to trace, beginning just a few days before his twentieth birthday, when Priestley enlisted in September 1914. -

It assesses past academic literature on the role of fiction in historical understanding, and on the processes involved in the writing, reading, adapting, and interpreting of fiction. -
