A child dies every four hours due to abuse or neglect, the fifth leading cause of death amongst children.

For most people, "It's a problem for someone else." However, child abuse involves more than just abuser and child. It involves the entire family and community. was Generally, abuse is divided into four categories: *Physical Abuse: a non‐accidental injury of a child. This is characterized by bruises, welts, burns, fractures, bite marks, and sometimes death. by *Sexual Abuse: any sexual activity with a child *Physical neglect: the failure to provide medical care, appropriate clothing, supervisions, housing, food, and other basic needs of the child. Harbor *Emotional or Verbal Abuse: anpublication area extremely difficult to define and often untreated. This may involve such behavior as threatening, teasing, insulting, or other attacksto on child's sense of self‐worth. The following is a description of Child Protectiveproduced Services (CPS), their goals, objectives, and services: This Child Protective Services is a statewide program available in all geographicalStart/ECEAP areas of the state.

Eligibility: Sound 1. Program: Service is initiated upon receipt of a report alleging child abuse/neglect. Reports are accepted from anyone, including anonymous sources.Head The child in question remains eligible for the service until it is shown that the child is not suffering from abuse/neglect and is no longer in jeopardy.

2. Financial: CPS is available without charge and without regard to income. In addition, other Title XX and IV‐B services, such as, homemaker services, daycare, emergency foster care, and chore services, which are provided in support of the protective service case plan, can be offered without regard to income.

Children and Family Services Goals, Objectives, and Services:

*Preventing or remedying neglect, abuse, or exploitation of children *To respond to all reports made to DSHS alleging abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children under the age of 18 years. *Receive and investigate reports of all alleged abuse, neglect, or exploitation of children, including identification and diagnosis relating to such children.

*Determine the validity of each report and whether the child in question, and other children in the same care, have been, or are, vulnerable, or at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation. *Provide, arrange, or refer for counseling and/or therapy for the child, as well as the parents, guardians, or other alleged "abuser."

*Cooperatively develop, or arrange for training courses for parents/guardians, or refer them to established programs. *Arrange for or provide emergency shelter for children, including runaways (DSHS estimated this figure to be about 1000 annually). *Provide, arrange, or refer to legal representation for children when appropriate. *Arrange or refer for medical care for abused, neglected, or exploited children and their parents, if parents are indigent.

Refer to appropriate law enforcement agency when: 1. A crime may have been committed 2. A court warrant had been obtained and the parents refuse to allow child to be removed. 3. A child's life or safety is in immediate danger. *Petition and/or provide information to courts to establishwas warship, including protective supervision. *Cooperate with out‐of‐state child protective service agencies in the delivery of appropriate services. * To cooperatively develop and maintain interagency and inter‐professional or paraprofessional agreements (guidelines for cooperation).
