National Walk Safely To School Day Friday 23 May 2014 Primary school aged children across Australia will make those important steps towards a healthier future by participating in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 23 May 2014. National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmen- tal benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can pro- vide for the long term health of our children. The annual event, now in its 15th year, encourages primary school aged children to walk to and from school, not just on Friday 23 May, but every day. Harold Scruby, Chairman and CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia said that unless teachers, parents, carers and the community generally get behind this event and its objectives, the outlook for Australia’s children is not good. “The childhood obesity epidemic has reached such critical levels in Australia, that 1 in 4 children are now overweight or obese. Unless there are significant changes to physical activity and diet, this is expected to reach 1 in 3 by 2020. “Children require at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity Ð and regular walking is the best exercise for all of us,” he said. Children are encouraged to lead a more active lifestyle by including a walk at the beginning, during and end of each day. The event also pro- motes improved diets, positive environmental action, better use of public transport with reduced car-dependency and important road safety mes- sages such as “children aged 10 years or under must always hold the hand of an adult’s hand when crossing the road,” said Mr Scruby. To support the day and encourage ongoing healthy behaviour, a fun and free interactive App is available to help keep the motivation up within families and schools. It measures the distances children walk, their aver- age speeds, maps and even allows schools to view scoreboards of their students’ walking achievements. Newcastle Herald, Newcastle NSW 06 May 2014

MAYOR’S COLUMN

I would like to pass on my congratulations to our Member for Bathurst Paul Toole MP for his appointment as Minister for Local Government. With Paul’s background in Local Government I believe he will be well suited to the role. This is a great step forward for the Bathurst Electorate. …………………………….

Last Friday 25 April I attended both the Dawn Service and the Anzac Day March held in Oberon to commemorate the 99th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. It was pleasing to see such a large number of people at both services. The Dawn Service was very reverent and those who gathered found it very moving. The Anzac Day March was also well attended. A gathering of returned servicemen and women led the march and it was lovely to see so many children from each of the Schools represented at the service. …………………………….

The RMS has advised that there will be a change in the speed zone on a section of O’Connell Road effective from 30 April 2014. The 100km speed limit will be reduced to 80km/hr from 250m north of the Beaconsfield Rd intersection to 2.9km north of Beaconsfield Rd, a total length of 2.6km. Warning signs have been erected to remind motorists to be aware of these speed changes. This change is the second speed zone change in recent years in this area and indicates to me that the RMS are more focused on reducing speed than improving road design and road surface. I am also disappointed in the lack of consultation by the RMS prior to introducing these changes. …………………………….

As I reported in last week’s column there have been a large number of tourists in the area over the School Holidays. Over the Easter long weekend 1175 people called into the Visitor Information Centre and accommodation providers in the area have been kept busy throughout the whole school holiday period. The main enquiries are for mushrooming which is very popular at this time of year. This weekend is also expected to be busy with both Mayfield Garden and Gairlock Garden open displaying their beautiful Autumn colour. The Tablelands Way Farmers Markets will also be held on Saturday morning in the grounds of the St Barnabas Anglican Church. …………………………….

Friends of the Oberon Library (FOOLS’s) are again coordinating the Oberon Waste to Art Competition and Exhibition. Entries for this year’s exhibition close on Friday 3 May. The Awards night will be held on Friday 9 May, commencing from 5.30pm at the Robert Hooper Community Centre. For further information please contact Kathy Sajowitz on 0419 231 525 or email [email protected]. The FOOL’s do a great job coordinating this exhibition and the standard of entries is growing each year. It is amazing to see how creative people are with items most of us would throw out. …………………………….

Walk Safely to School Day is an initiative of the Pedestrian Council of Australia which aims at promoting the road safety, health and environmental benefits of walking and/or taking public transport to school. This year’s National Walk Safely to School Day will be held on Friday 23 May 2013. All primary school children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school on this day.
