How skin irritation is caused concerning the forces in blade Summary shaving as well as the engineering of the physical razor and the process of shaving. Wanted general information about how razors work Reason for Interest Three forces in shaving: Notes 1. Perpendicular to skin – for loading the razor 2. Parallel to skin – for dragging the razor 3. Cutting the hairs Majority of razors can pivot forwards and backwards to spread load evenly on skin. There is a ratio between the number of blades and the space between the blades. Less space between blades=less load on each blade and less skin irritation from blades. Bigger cartridge=more skin irritation. The skin stretches up to 20% when shaving. This can cause irritation. Lubricating elements (shaving gel, lubricating strip, etc.) can cause less drag/irritation by reducing friction. Lubricating strip is usually placed after the blades. Wet shaving (when hair is hydrated) causes less irritation (force to cut beard is 40% less). Skin irritation can be measured using laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI). In this shiur we need to apply the principles that we learned in Part 1 to the electric shaver and understand the contemporary psak. A] THE HISTORY OF THE ELECTRIC SHAVER • 1879 - invention of the manual beard-clipping machine, mentioned by poskim at the end of the 19C. • 1898 - patents first filed for an electric razor. • 1903 - invention of the safety razor by Gillette in the US. This was marketed in Europe from 1905. • 1925 - invention of the electric safety razor and the vibro-shave. • 1931 - Jacob Schick created the first electric shaver. This was already referenced in the US poskim by 1932.1 • 1939 - Phillips began to produce the shaver with a round head. 2 • 1980s - Invention of the ‘Lift & Cut’ electric shaver. • LASER HAIR REMOVAL Treatment Instructions
LASER HAIR REMOVAL Treatment Instructions LASER HAIR REMOVAL PRE TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS • No tanning, sunless tanning or tanning beds. Tanning should be avoided for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment. Self-tanning creams and sprays need to completely fade. An SPF of 30+ should be applied generously 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. • Avoid Certain Medications. Medicated Creams (i.e. glycolic, tretinoin, retinol, some antibiotics) that make you photosensitive should be stopped one week prior to treatment. • No facials, peels or laser skincare treatments. No peels or strong skin care treatments in laser hair removal areas for two weeks before and after laser treatments. • No waxing, tweezing, bleaching or threading. Lasers target the pigment melanin in the hair beneath the surface of the skin. Do not wax, tweeze, bleach, thread or use depilatory agents before, during or after your treatment. Shaving is the only recommended hair removal method when performing laser hair removal. • Do not use lotion, cream, make-up or deodorant on areas to be treated. Come to your appointment with clean skin free of any topical products. Any products applied to the skin can obstruct or refract laser light negatively and decrease effectiveness of the treatment. LASER HAIR REMOVAL POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS Immediately after treatment there may be mild redness and swelling at the treatment site, which could last up to 2 hours or longer. Redness can last up to 2-3 days. The treated area may feel like a sunburn. Anywhere from 5-20 days after the treatment, shedding of the surface hair may occur and will appear as new hair growth.

  • WHO Surgical Site Infection Prevention Guidelines Web Appendix 7 Summary of a Systematic Review on the Effectiveness and Optimal Method of Hair Removal
WHO Surgical Site infection Prevention Guidelines Web Appendix 7 Summary of a systematic review on the effectiveness and optimal method of hair removal 1. Introduction Removal of hair from the intended site of surgical incision has traditionally been part of the routine preoperative preparation of patients undergoing surgery. Hair removal may be necessary to facilitate adequate exposure to the site and preoperative skin marking. Furthermore, suturing and the application of wound dressings can be complicated by the presence of hair. Apart from these practical issues, hair has been associated with a lack of cleanliness and the potential to cause surgical site infection (SSI). However, there is also the belief that hair removal inversely increases the risk of SSI by causing microscopic trauma of the skin. To minimize the potential of skin trauma, the use of clippers instead of razors has been proposed for preoperative hair removal. Clippers cut the hair close to the skin without actually touching it, whereas razors involve a sharp blade drawn directly over the skin. A third method for hair removal is the application of depilatory creams containing chemicals. The drawbacks are the necessity to leave the cream in place for approximately 15-20 minutes for the hair to be dissolved and the potential for allergic reactions. A Cochrane review, published in 2009 and updated in 2011, concluded that there was no statistically significant effect on SSI rates of hair removal 1. However, a significant harm was seen when hair removal with razors was compared with clipping. 2. PICO questions 1. Does hair removal affect the incidence of SSI? 2.
