LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCLUDE THE 2018/2019 CLASSICAL SEASON, MAY 10-12 Denève leads St. Louis premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Nyx, Ravel’s Shéhérazade featuring soprano Rinat Shaham in her SLSO debut, and Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique in final concert before becoming Music Director in September 2019 (April 10, 2019, St. Louis, MO) – Stéphane Denève, Music Director Designate of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, will lead the final weekend of the orchestra’s 2018/2019 classical subscription season, May 10-12. The concerts take place at 8:00pm Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, and 3:00pm Sunday, May 12. Denève, who serves as the Music Director Designate this season, will become the 13th Music Director of the SLSO this September in the 2019/2020 season, the orchestra’s 140th. The May 10-12 concerts open with the St. Louis premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Nyx. Described as “a rich and dazzling musical invention” (San Francisco Chronicle), the tone poem draws its inspiration from the Greek goddess Nyx, a relatively-unknown figure in Greek mythology. The concerts continue with Ravel’s Shéhérazade, a song cycle based on the text of a Tristan Klingsor poem written in response to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade Suite. Ravel’s composition reflects the story of the heroine and narrator of The Arabian Nights. Mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham makes her SLSO debut singing Shéhérazade. Denève Closing the 18/19 season is Berlioz’s masterpiece Symphonie fantastique, considered among the most influential orchestral compositions of all time. A celebrated interpreter of French repertoire, Denève leads the SLSO in this rousing symphonic story about a talented artist who resorts to drastic measures because of unrequited love. • Cuban Flair Set to Heat up the Sydney Opera House This Summer in John Bell’S Carmen
MEDIA RELEASE JANUARY, 2018 Bizet | Directed by John Bell | Conducted by Carlo Goldstein | Tahu Matheson Cuban flair set to heat up the Sydney Opera House this summer in John Bell’s Carmen 10 February – 23 March | Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House Starring | Rinat Shaham | Marcelo Puente | Michael Honeyman | Sian Pendry After a sell-out season in 2016, John Bell’s vibrant production of Bizet’s Carmen, featuring gypsy girls and bull-fighting boys in eye-popping colours, returns to the Sydney Opera House this summer. Set against crumbling colonial architecture, this vivid production will bring obsessions and love to the stage through irresistible tunes, traditional Spanish dance and a touch of contemporary breakdancing. “Carmen is colourful, physical and entertaining, but it shouldn’t get too pretty,” said John Bell. “To succeed, it must have punch. Sex and sexual politics. Physicality and power.” Israeli born mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham reprises the role of Carmen, a character she has been internationally recognised as one of today’s finest interpreters of the seductive femme fatale. Sharing the role is the stunning Sian Pendry, who made her mark as the fiery Carmen last year in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Tenor extraordinaires, Argentine Marcelo Puente and Georgian Otar Jorjikia, will both make their highly anticipated Opera Australia debuts, sharing the role of soldier Don Josè. Carmen also brings with it some of Australia’s biggest opera names – Michael Honeyman (Escamillo), Stacey Alleaume and Natalie Aroyan (Micaëla), Richard Anderson and Adrian Tamburini (Zuniga) are but a few of the exceptional singers to appear on stage.

MEDIA RELEASE Bizet | Directed by John Bell | Conducted by Guillaume Tourniaire Carmen 4 May – 26 May | State Theatre, Arts Centre Melbourne Starring | Rinat Shaham | Dmytro Popov | Shane Lowrencev | Stacey Alleaume John Bell’s highly acclaimed production of Bizet’s Carmen has its Melbourne premiere this May The passion, heat and danger of Carmen is brought to dazzling heights in John Bell’s acclaimed production that tackles Bizet’s gritty tale of power, corruption and destruction head on. Set against crumbling, monumental colonial architecture, this vibrant and colourful production will bring obsessions and love to the stage through traditional Spanish dance and a touch of contemporary breakdancing. “I’ve always been intrigued by the psychology of that choice,” contemplates John Bell, who this year follows up his critically acclaimed Tosca with Bizet’s Carmen. “What leads you to love the one person who is going to destroy you? “Carmen is colourful, physical and entertaining, but it shouldn't get too pretty", he adds. “To succeed, it must have punch. Sex and sexual politics. Physicality and power.” Conducted by Guillaume Tourniaire, Bizet buffs and first-time opera-goers alike will be captivated by Carmen’s extraordinary score. “Carmen is a must see opera, even if you’ve never set foot in an opera house,” said Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini. “If you’re new to opera, this production of Carmen is the perfect first show – the work itself is, of course is brilliant, the production values are second-to- none and with the stellar Australian and international cast we have assembled, it’s an opera that can’t help but impress.” Carmen brings with it some of opera’s biggest names – Israeli born mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham (Carmen) and Ukrainian tenor Dmytro Popov (Don José) both return to the Opera Australia stage after starring in Carmen in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour.
