CONJECTURES sense similar to that in which processes or things may be said to be parts of the world; that the world consists of facts in a sense in which it may be said to consist of (four dimensional) processes or of (three dimensional) things. They believe that, just as certain nouns are names of things, sentences are names of facts. And they sometimes even believe that sentences are some- thing like pictures of facts, or that they are projections of facts.7 But all this is mistaken. The fact that there is no elephant in this room is not one of the processes or parts ofthe world; nor is the fact that a hailstorm in Newfound- 10 land occurred exactIy I I I years after a tree collapsed in the New Zealand bush. Facts are something like a common product oflanguage and reality; they are reality pinned down by descriptive statements. They are like abstracts from TRUTH, RATIONALITY, AND THE a book, made in a language which is different from that of the original, and determined not only by the original book but nearly as much by the principles GROWTH OF SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE of selection and by other methods of abstracting, and by the means of which the new language disposes. Mathematical logic offers an idealized account of correctness, namely, formal derivability. Informal proof is viewed as an approximation to the ideal. • A mathematician can be called on to expand definitions and inferences. • The process has to terminate with fundamental notions, assumptions, and inferences. Formal logic and mathematical proof Two objections: • Few mathematicians can state formal axioms. • There are various formal foundations on offer. Slight elaboration: • Ordinary mathematics relies on an informal foundation: numbers, tuples, sets, functions, relations, structures, . • Formal logic accounts for those (and any of a number of systems suffice). Formal logic and mathematical proof What about intuitionstic logic, or large cardinal axioms? Most mathematics today is classical, and does not require strong assumptions. But even in those cases, the assumptions can be make explicit and formal. Formal logic and mathematical proof So formal derivability provides a standard of correctness. Azzouni writes: The first point to observe is that formalized proofs have become the norms of mathematical practice. And that is to say: should it become clear that the implications (of assumptions to conclusion) of an informal proof cannot be replicated by a formal analogue, the status of that informal proof as a successful proof will be rejected. Formal verification, a branch of computer science, provides corroboration: computational proof assistants make formalization routine (though still tedious). -

'DESCRIPTORS *Educational Research; *Research Methodology IDENTIFIERS *Logical Positivism ABSTRACT Although quantitative research methodology is widely applied by psychological researchers, there is a common misconception that quantitative research is based on logical positivism. This paper examines the relationship between quantitative research and eight major notions of logical positivism:(1) verification;(2) pro-observation;(3) anti-cause; (4) downplaying explanation;(5) anti-theoretical entities;(6) anti-metaphysics; (7) logical analysis; and (8) frequentist probability. It is argued that the underlying philosophy of modern quantitative research in psychology is in sharp contrast to logical positivism. Putting the labor of an out-dated philosophy into quantitative research may discourage psychological researchers from applying this research approach and may also lead to misguided dispute between quantitative and qualitative researchers. What is needed is to encourage researchers and students to keep an open mind to different methodologies and apply skepticism to examine the philosophical assumptions instead of accepting them unquestioningly. 1 2 TRACING THE DEVELOPMENT OF STRUCTURAL REALISM Ioannis Votsis 1. Introduction This chapter traces the development of structural realism within the scientific realism debate and the wider current of structuralism that has swept the philosophy of the natural sciences in the twentieth century. 1 The primary aim is to make perspicuous the many manifestations of structural realism and their underlying claims. Among other things, I will compare structural realism’s various manifestations in order to throw more light onto the relations between them. At the end of the chapter, I will identify the main objections raised against the epistemic form of structural realism. This last task will pave the way for the evaluation of the structural realist answer to the main epistemological question, an evaluation that will be central to the rest of this dissertation. Generally construed, structuralism is a point of view that emphasises the importance of relations. It takes the structure, i.e. the nexus of relations, of a given domain of interest to be the foremost goal of research and holds that an understanding of the subject matter has to be, and most successfully is, achieved in structural terms. The following quote from Redhead (2001a) nicely conveys this intuition: “Informally a structure is a system of related elements, and structuralism is a point of view which focuses attention on the relations between the elements as distinct from the elements themselves”(74). This vision has shaped research programmes in fields as diverse as mathematics, linguistics, literary criticism, aesthetics, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy of science. It is the last-mentioned that I am concerned with in this chapter. -

Lobovikov1 APPLYING LOGIC TO PHILOSOPHICAL THEOLOGY: A FORMAL DEDUCTIVE INFERENCE OF AFFIRMING GOD’S EXISTENCE FROM ASSUMING THE A-PRIORI-NESS OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE SIGMA FORMAL AXIOMATIC THEORY For the first time a precise definition is given to the Sigma formal axiomatic theory, which is a result of logical formalization of philosophical epistemology; and an interpretation of this formal theory is offered. Also, for the first time, a formal deductive proof is constructed in Sigma for a formula, which represents (in the offered interpretation) the statement of God’s Existence under the condition that knowledge is a priori. Keywords: formal axiomatic epistemology theory; two-valued algebra of formal axiology; formal-axiological equivalence; a-priori knowledge; existence of God. 1. Introduction Since Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Cicero, and especially since the very beginning of Christianity philosophy, the possibility or impossibility of logical proving God’s existence has been a nontrivial problem of philosophical theology. Today the literature on this topic is immense. However, even in our days, the knot- ty problem remains unsolved as all the suggested options of solving it are contro- versial from some point of view. Some respectable researchers (let us call them “pessimists”) believed that the logical proving of God’s existence in theoretical philosophy was impossible on principle, for instance, Occam, Hume [1], and Kant [2] believed that any rational theoretic-philosophy proof of His existence was a mistake (illusion), consequently, a search for the logical proving of His existence was wasting resources and, hence, harmful; only faith in God was relevant and useful; reason was irrelevant and use- less. -

Elliott Sober Contrastive Empiricism I Despite what Hegel may have said, syntheses have not been very successful in philosophical theorizing. Typically, what happens when you combine a thesis and an antithesis is that you get a mishmash, or maybe just a contradiction. For example, in the philosophy of mathematics, formalism says that mathematical truths are true in virtue of the way we manipulate symbols. Mathematical Platonism, on the other hand, holds that mathematical statements are made true by abstract objects that exist outside of space and time. What would a synthesis of these positions look like? Marks on paper are one thing, Platonic forms an other. Compromise may be a good idea in politics, but it looks like a bad one in philosophy. With some trepidation, I propose in this paper to go against this sound advice. Realism and empiricism have always been contradictory tendencies in the philos ophy of science. The view I will sketch is a synthesis, which I call Contrastive Empiricism. Realism and empiricism are incompatible, so a synthesis that merely conjoined them would be a contradiction. Rather, I propose to isolate important elements in each and show that they combine harmoniously. I will leave behind what I regard as confusions and excesses. The result, I hope, will be neither con tradiction nor mishmash. II Empiricism is fundamentally a thesis about experience. It has two parts. First, there is the idea that experience is necessary. Second, there is the thesis that ex perience suffices. Necessary and sufficient for what? Usually this blank is filled in with something like: knowledge of the world outside the mind. -

The Pragmatics of explanation: Remarks on van Fraassen’s theory of why-questions1 A Pragmática da explicação: Comentários sobre a teoria das questões-por-quê de van Fraassen Renato Cesar Cani Universidade Federal do Paraná – UFPR/CAPES – Brasil [email protected] Abstract: In this article, my aim is to analyze Bas van Fraassen’s pragmatic solution to two of the traditional problems concerning scientific explanation, namely, rejection and asymmetry. According to his view, an explanation is an answer to some request for information. The emergence of a question, as well as the evaluation of the explanations adduced, depends on considerations about contextual factors. In addition, I will evaluate the pertinence of objections raised by Philip Kitcher and Wesley Salmon against van Fraassen’s account. I will argue that their charge is not sound, for it actually misunderstands the role played by context in van Fraassen’s account. Although Salmon’s and Kitcher’s realist commitments motivate the point made by them, I will hold that a pragmatic account of explanation does not commit one to an anti-realist approach to science. Empiricism, Stances and the Problem of Voluntarism Peter Baumann Synthese 178, 2011, 207-224 Empiricism can be very roughly characterized as the view that our knowledge about the world is based on sensory experience. Our knowledge about the world is "based" on sensory experience in the sense that we could not know what we know without relying on sense experience. This leaves open the possibility that sense experience is only necessary but not sufficient for the knowledge based upon it1-as long as the non-empirical elements are not themselves sufficient for the relevant piece of knowledge.2 The basing relation is not just a genetic one but also a justificatory one: Sense experience does not only lead to beliefs which happen to count as knowledge but also qualifies them as knowledge. In his important book The Empirical Stance Bas van Fraassen characterizes traditional empiricism at one point in a more negative way-as involving the rejection of "metaphysical" explanations which proceed by postulating the existence of something not 1 "But although all our cognition commences with experience, yet it does not on that account all arise from experience." (Kant, CpR, B1). -

An Argument Against the Unification Account of Explanation Michael Strevens Draft of December 2009 Abstract Unification accounts of explanation equate unifying power with explanatory power; you might expect, then, that an increase in the known unifying power of a theory would be accompanied by an increase the perceived quality of its explanations. This paper presents examples suggesting that there is no such relationship: a theory’s increased unifying power means that it explains many new things, but it does not explain the old things any better just because it now explains the new things. It seems that the relationship between unifying and explanatory power is rather complex—or non-existent. The negative implications for the unification account are investigated. 1 1. The Unication Approach to Explanation According to a unification account of explanation, to explain a phenomenon— an event, a sequence of events, a law, an ongoing “effect” such as the aurora borealis—is to show that it belongs to a set of phenomena which can be unified by a relatively simple theory (Friedman 1974; Kitcher 1981, 1989). A generic form of the unification account might, then, require that an explana- tion of a phenomenon e do three things: 1. Present a sufficiently simple theory T, 2. Present a sufficiently large and perhaps diverse set of phenomena E to which e belongs, and 3. Show that (the phenomena in) E can be derived in the right sort of way from T. To flesh out the view, three things must be provided: an account of what counts as deriving E from T in the “right sort of way”, an account of what counts as a “sufficiently large” (or sufficiently diverse) set of phenomena, and an account of what counts as a “sufficiently simple” theory. -

Philosophical Adventures Elisabeth A. Lloyd INDIANA UNIVERSITY John Dewey lecture delivered at the one hundred tenth annual Central Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 21, 2013. I had the lovely opportunity of being introduced by Alison Wylie, to whom I owe a large thank you, and thank you especially to Anne Jacobson, and the whole program committee, for this chance to share a bit of my life and career with you. This invitation charged that I was to give an “autobiographical sort” of talk. Specifically, it required the speaker to provide “an intellectual autobiography, with perhaps some account of the way in which [she] was shaped by or shaped the profession, how the profession seems to have changed over the years, etc. The lecturer might reflect on the people and issues that led [her] into philosophy and provide a personal perspective on the state of the field today.” I tried to stick pretty closely to this mandate. Over the course of my career, which is now—although I find this astounding—over thirty years long, I have had the great pleasure of seeing my primary field of research grow and establish itself as a serious field of thought and activity in philosophy. When I was in graduate school at Princeton in the early 1980s, I was told, and I quote, “there is no such thing as Philosophy of Biology. You can’t write a dissertation on that.” And John Beatty wrote that same year: “In the world of academic specialties and subspecialties, philosophy of biology certainly counts as a self-respecting, if not otherwise respected, field of study.”1 It is impossible to imagine anyone saying that now! Five years later, I was also told that feminist philosophy of science was hopeless, that there were no good cases of male bias in science worth discussing, and that since science was self- correcting, those sorts of bias couldn’t have any long-term significance.
