Accordingly, Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee is going to organize a National Lok Adalat with the approval of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Pradeep Nandrajog, Judge High Court of Delhi and Chairman, DHCLSC for the pending cases under following category:- 1. Misc. Appeals, Civil Appeals, 2nd Appeals, Original Suits, Writs,MACT Appeals. 2. Electricity & Water Bills(Excluding Theft Cases). 3. Service matters relating to pay and allowances and retrial benefits. To facilitate settlements, the Committee will organize pre-Lok Adalat sittings. The parties and their Advocates who are interested to settle their matters in the National Lok Adalat may contact O/o Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, Chamber No. 33 to 37, Lawyers Chambers, Delhi High Court with particulars of their cases.     REVIEW ARTICLE The hazards of smoking and the benefits of cessation: A critical summation of the epidemiological evidence in high-income countries Prabhat Jha* Centre for Global Health Research, Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Unity Health, Toronto, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada Abstract In high-income countries, the biggest cause of premature death, defined as death before 70 years, is smoking of manufactured cigarettes. Smoking-related disease was responsible for about 41 million deaths in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, cumulatively, from 1960 to 2020. Every million cigarettes smoked leads to one death in the US and Canada, but slightly more than one death in the UK. The 21st century hazards reveal that smokers who start smoking early in adult life and do not quit lose a decade of life expectancy versus non-smokers. Cessation, particularly before age 40 years, yields large reductions in mortality risk. Up to two- thirds of deaths among smokers are avoidable at non-smoking death rates, and former smokers have about only a quarter of the excess risk of death compared to current smokers. The gap between scientific and popular understanding of smoking hazards is surprisingly large.     THE UNATTAINABLE BAR: A LACK OF GENDER DIVERSITY IN THE INDIAN JUDICIARY - Kairavi Raju* ABSTRACT Since its establishment, the Supreme Court of India has had only eight sitting women judges. A diverse bench is an essential characteristic of a fair and impartial judiciary. It provides minority sections of the society a voice and enhances the courts’ representative quotient and democratic legitimacy. The percentage of women judges in the lower and higher judiciary at present is nothing less than deplorable. This article highlights the operation of gender bias in the judicial system. It includes influencing bench compositions, evaluating potential women judges on arbitrary criteria, applying higher standards when assessing women judges in addition to constantly challenging their professional competency. Furthermore, an attempt has been made to understand the reasons for such gender based bias. These include inflexible workplace environments, occupational capacity and limitations drawn on the basis of gender, failure on part of women to be able to freely ‘perform’ gender, the nature of law as a profession and insecurity on the part of men due to fear of major overhauling of legal system due to women’s disparate decision making style. This article also examines the affirmative actions taken by numerous states in the country and reviews them in light of constitutional mandates and international conventions. Finally, the article examines women’s response to such organizational and professional barriers. INTRODUCTION The recognition of feminist principles in the United Kingdom can be traced back to the First World War; Britain experienced a shortage of work force in factories back home, hence, a large number of women were recruited while men were enlisted as troops to fight on the front.1 However, inclusion of women in the legal profession was never given due thought and was, in fact, discouraged.
