Wildlife site resource map and species information for neighbourhood planning – Abbotskerswell June 2016 - 1 - Guidance notes: 1-Introduction Any development, from a loft conversion to a housing estate has the potential to affect wildlife. By wildlife we mean the whole range of plants and animals found in Devon (also referred to as biodiversity). Sites that are important for their geology can also be affected. With a Neighbourhood Plan, communities are able to establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood. They will be able to say, for example, where new homes and offices should be built, and what they should look like. Neighbourhood Plans should take into account local need, housing targets identified by the local authority and the mitigation hierarchy. This is important, as where the local authority says that an area needs to grow, then communities can use neighbourhood planning to influence the type, design, location and mix of new development. They cannot however use neighbourhood planning to block the building of new homes and businesses. The information below is provided to assist you in designing a neighbourhood plan, however the information DBRC holds on biodiversity can be enhanced by additional survey or species recording within the area and you may want to consider how more information could be gathered by the community. For further information on how to record biodiversity where you live, go to http://www.dbrc.org.uk 2.1 Sites important for wildlife There are several designations that cover sites of wildlife and geological value in Devon. These include sites with international and national statutory designation and local non- statutory designation and are shown on your map. -

ALEXANDER Museum of Zoology and Departmentof Zoology The Universityof Michigan,Ann Arbor ABSTRACT Seven general kinds of life cycles are known among crickets; they differ chieff,y in overwintering (diapause) stage and number of generations per season, or diapauses per generation. Some species with broad north-south ranges vary in these respects, spanning wholly or in part certain of the gaps between cycles and suggesting how some of the differences originated. Species with a particular cycle have predictable responses to photoperiod and temperature regimes that affect behavior, development time, wing length, bod)• size, and other characteristics. Some polymorphic tendencies also correlate with habitat permanence, and some are influenced by population density. Genera and subfamilies with several kinds of life cycles usually have proportionately more species in temperate regions than those with but one or two cycles, although numbers of species in all widely distributed groups diminish toward the higher lati tudes. The tendency of various field cricket species to become double-cycled at certain latitudes appears to have resulted in speciation without geographic isolation in at least one case. Intermediate steps in this allochronic speciation process are illustrated by North American and Japanese species; the possibility that this process has also occurred in other kinds of temperate insects is discussed. INTRODUCTION This HEAP Area has been defined on the basis of geology, topography, land use and settlement patterns which differentiate it from other HEAP areas. This document identifies essential characteristics of the Undercliff as its geomorphology and rugged landslip areas, its archaeological potential, its 19 th century cottages ornés /marine villas and their grounds, and the Victorian seaside resort character of Ventnor. The Area has a highly distinctive character with an inner cliff towering above a landscape (now partly wooded) demarcated by stone boundary walls. The most significant features of this historic landscape, the most important forces for change and key management issues are considered. Actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT Location, Geology and Topography • The Undercliff is identified as a discrete Landscape Character Type in the Isle of Wight AONB Management Plan (2004, 132). • The Area lies to the south of the South Wight Downland , from which it is separated by vertical cliffs forming a geological succession from Ferrugunious Sands through Sandrock, Carstone, Gault Clay, Upper Greensand, Chert Beds and Lower Chalk (Hutchinson 1987, Fig. 6). o The zone between the inner cliff and coastal cliff is a landslip area o This landslip is caused by groundwater lubrication of slip planes within the Gault Clays and Sandrock Beds. -

Essential characteristics of the South-West Wight Coastal Zone include the long coastline and cliffs containing fossils and archaeological material, the pattern of historic lanes, tracks and boundaries, field patterns showing evidence of open-field enclosure, valley-floor land, historic villages, hamlets and dispersed farmsteads, and vernacular architecture. The Military Road provides a scenic and historically significant route along the coast. The settlements of Mottistone, Hulverstone, Brighstone and Shorwell straddle the boundary between this Area and the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge. Historically these settlements exploited both Areas. For the sake of convenience these settlements are described in the HEAP Area document for the West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge even where they fall partially within this Area. However, they are also referred to in this HEAP document where appropriate. This document considers the most significant features of the historic landscape, the most important forces for change, and the key management issues. Actions particularly relevant to this Area are identified from those listed in the Isle of Wight HEAP Aims, Objectives and Actions. ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT Location, Geology and Topography • Occupies strip of land between West Wight Downland Edge & Sandstone Ridge and coast. • Coastline within this Area stretches from Compton to Shepherd’s Chine and comprises soft, eroding cliffs with areas of landslip. -

Top 10 Real-Life Body Snatchers Parasites and zombies are not science fiction; they infest rats, crickets, ants, moths and other creatures, sucking the life out of them By Megan Gambino, Smithsonian.com October 24, 2011 To ensure their own survival, parasites alter the appearance and behavior of their hosts in the creepiest ways. For instance, rats carrying the parasitic protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, which reproduces inside the gut of a cat, no longer fear the smell of cat urine. In fact, they are sexually attracted to the scent, according to a recent study. This way, infected rats walk right into the grips of a feline. Here are ten other parasites whose sophisticated manipulations of animals are more horrifying than fiction. 1. Paragordius tricuspidatus Exactly how a hairworm parasitizes a cricket is unknown. Scientists suspect that the insect ingests either an infected mosquito or water containing hairworm larvae. But once inside, the hairworm grows three to four times as long as the arthropod, filling all parts of its body except the head and legs. What happens next is even more bizarre. The parasite, Paragordius tricuspidatus, produces proteins that hijack the cricket’s central nervous system, making it attracted to areas brighter than its shaded forest home. The cricket, Nemobius sylvestris, heads then to an exposed pond or river and dives in, at which point the hairworm emerges from its host’s rear end. In an aquatic environment, the worm can find a mate and reproduce. For some crickets, it’s a suicide leap. But others lucky enough not to have drowned have lived for several months after the parasite removes itself. -

Updates to tasks / matters arising from meeting 6 December 2018 Bus Stops – Mark Earp and a team of four inspected as many rural bus stops as they could. It was felt that by and large these were pretty good but a few do need improvement. All bus stops had a post and a current timetable. There had been grant out for sustainable travel called the “Innovation fund” Mark wondered if anyone had applied for concreate pads, to be funded, at any of the rural bus stop locations? The General Manager for Southern Vectis Mr Richard Tyldsley has been invited to the next LAF meeting. Prior to this LAF members / guests should take time to look at the rural bus stop locations in their areas and using their local knowledge have given feedback to the LAF of any unsafe or redundant ones. -

Isle of Wight Parks, Gardens & Other Designed Landscapes Historic Environment Action Plan Isle of Wight Gardens Trust: March 2015 2 Foreword The Isle of Wight landscape is recognised as a source of inspiration for the picturesque movement in tourism, art, literature and taste from the late 18th century but the particular significance of designed landscapes (parks and gardens) in this cultural movement is perhaps less widely appreciated. Evidence for ‘picturesque gardens’ still survives on the ground, particularly in the Undercliff. There is also evidence for many other types of designed landscapes including early gardens, landscape parks, 19th century town and suburban gardens and gardens of more recent date. In the 19th century the variety of the Island’s topography and the richness of its scenery, ranging from gentle cultivated landscapes to the picturesque and the sublime with views over both land and sea, resulted in the Isle of Wight being referred to as the ‘Garden of England’ or ‘Garden Isle’. Designed landscapes of all types have played a significant part in shaping the Island’s overall landscape character to the present day even where surviving design elements are fragmentary. Equally, it can be seen that various natural components of the Island’s landscape, in particular downland and coastal scenery, have been key influences on many of the designed landscapes which will be explored in this Historic Environment Action Plan (HEAP). It is therefore fitting that the HEAP is being prepared by the Isle of Wight Gardens Trust as part of the East Wight Landscape Partnership’s Down to the Coast Project, particularly since well over half of all the designed landscapes recorded on the Gardens Trust database fall within or adjacent to the project area. -

Paradise on the Isle of Wight, Compton Bay and Downs, butterfly walk Shippards Chine, Military Road, Brook, Isle of Wight, PO30 4HB Butterflying does not get any better than this; walking along the TRAIL chalk ridge that runs through the Walking middle of the Isle of Wight you will find an abundance of flora and GRADE insect life, pure escapism into the Moderate real world! This is a great site for Adonis blue and chalkhill blue DISTANCE butterflies, with large populations 5 miles (8.6km) of small lue, dark-green fritillary and Glanville fritillary. Brown TIME argus and grayling can also be 2 hours to 2 hours 30 spotted. In late summer you minutes can often catch a glimpse of the clouded yellow. OS MAP Landranger 196; Terrain Explorer OL29 There are moderate slopes with cattle terracettes, but the main track along the crest of the downs. Total ascent is 900ft (280m). The exposed downs can be windy, and the chalk is slippy in wet conditions. Contact Dogs are welcome, but please keep your dog on a lead around wildlife and take any mess home with Facilities you.
