    UNIVERSITY NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN SUMMARY Description. The University neighborhood encompasses two of Cleveland’s most well known places, University Circle and Little Italy. University Circle came into being in the 1880s with the donation of 63 acres of wooded parkland to the City by financier Jeptha Wade, one of the creators of Western Union. “Little Italy.” was established in the late 1800s by Italian immigrants who settled there for lucrative employment in the nearby marble works. The dense housing in Little Italy represents the largest residential area in the neighborhood. There are a few other isolated streets of residential and student housing located in the neighborhood. Between October and July we watched with awe as our headquarters was transformed week by week into our new home. Taken down to the studs last October, our new space now sparkles with the energy of clients, staff and the light that shines in from numerous well-positioned windows throughout the building. In any given hour of the day, staff can now collaborate easily in one building, clients can use our large meeting Dan Zelman spaces for Zumba or yoga in the evenings, and our art studio is brimming with creativity through the week. Alyson’s Place, our medical clinic operated with MetroHealth, is larger and more accessible, and now hosts our dementia caregiver support program as well. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and foresight of our lay leaders and special volunteers Jeffrey Kahn and Gerilyn Gleason, who devoted countless hours to ensure the look and feel of this project came together as we hoped, and better yet, on schedule. Without our special donors and friends of the agency, we could not have embraced this opportunity. We hope you will enjoy our stories of success and inclusion in this year’s report.     Arts and Cultural Industry Workforce Barometer: A Survey of Northeast Ohio Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations Prepared by Community Partnership for Arts and Culture 50 Public Square, Tower City Center Suite 555 Cleveland, Ohio 44113 June 30, 2004 In an effort to more thoroughly understand the state of health of Northeast Ohio’s nonprofit arts and cultural assets, The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (The Partnership) has conducted its second annual survey of job loss and growth in the arts and cultural sector. This year’s study was expanded to include The Partnership’s seven-county service area (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties). 175 organizations were contacted to participate in the study, 55 of which completed the survey. This represents a response rate of 32%. Below is a breakdown of the study’s findings. For a list of participating organizations, please see Appendix A. Summary of Findings Respondent organizations posted a net gain of 33 jobs for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2004. o 57 jobs were gained during the period o 24 jobs were lost during the period 66% of respondent organizations reported that the number of individuals in their employ either stayed the same or increased over the previous year o 33% of respondents reported that employment had increased o 33% of respondents reported that employment had stayed the same o 9% of respondents reported employment had decreased o 25% did not respond to this question 60% of the organizations reporting decreased employment were in the budget range of $1,000,000 - $4,999,999 78% of the organizations reporting increased employment had budgets under $1,000,000 1 Employment Increases Types of Positions o 51% of employment increases were programs and services2 positions o 27% of employment increases were administrative3 positions o 22% of employment increases were support4 positions 1 The data in this section only reflects the 45 positions for which data was available.

Please review the User Guide for Corridor Sketch Summaries prior to using information on this corridor: I-90: US 2 to Sprague Ave. I/C (Interstate 90 Central) This eight-mile, east-west corridor within Spokane County runs along Interstate 90 between US Route 2 and Sprague Avenue on the west and east end of downtown Spokane, respectively. The corridor is primarily urban with Spokane’s central business district directly north of this section of I-90. Land uses include dense commercial and residential developments as well as some industrial uses. In addition to downtown Spokane, a large medical campus lies just south of the corridor including Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital and St. Lukes Rehabilitation Institute. Other major landmarks nearby include Washington State University Spokane and Gonzaga University and Riverfront Park just north of the corridor and Spokane International Airport is just west of the corridor. Between US 2 and US 195, the character is mainly suburban to rural. Land use here includes commercial and residential along with several natural areas and parks. The terrain along the corridor is generally on a north-facing steady slope except at the east end where I-90 crosses over Latah Creek canyon. Vegetation is comprised of maintained grass, coniferous and deciduous trees, and brush.
