Luleå University of Technology, Daniel Koskinen Johan Hedberg i ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to obtain a deeper understanding about fan engagement in professional sports. Fan engagement originates from both the field of sports marketing as well as relationship marketing. This thesis has examined the benefits of fan engagement as well as marketing strategies for the concept. For this thesis, qualitative case studies with three hockey teams from the Swedish Hockey League, Modo Hockey, Skellefteå AIK and Frölunda Indians, has been conducted in order to be able to reach the purpose of this thesis. Our findings suggest that team identification (fan loyalty and fan attachment to a team), fan retention (fan satisfaction, strengthen the relationship with fans), new opportunities for sponsorships and brand image are considered to be important benefits for professional sports teams. Two strategies to use for professional sports teams in order to engage fans are online and event strategies. Regarding websites, data suggested that it mainly is used to provide information as a one-way communication tool, and that social media is primarily used for professional sports teams to interact with fans. A general conclusion can be drawn that fan engagement is an important factor to consider for professional sports teams. ii SAMMANFATTNING Syftet med denna studie är att få en djupare förståelse för supporterengagemang inom professionell sport. Supporterengagemang härstammar både från sportmarknadsföring och relationsmarknadsföring. Denna studie har undersökt mål och fördelar med supporterengagemang samt dess marknadsföringsstrategier. För att uppnå syftet med denna studie har kvalitativa fallstudier utförts med tre elitserieklubbar, Skellefteå AIK, Modo Hockey och Frölunda Indians. Resultat av vår studie visar att klubbarna anser att det är viktigt att få supportrar att känna sig som en del av organisationen, skapa lojala supportrar, stärka relationen samt göra supportrar nöjda i syfte att behålla dem. Nya sponsringsmöjligheter och varumärkets anseende visade sig också vara fördelar. Två strategier klubbarna kan använda sig av för att engagera supportrar är online och evenemangstrategier. Insamlad data visade även att klubbarnas officiella hemsidor primärt används som envägskommunikation för att tillhandahålla information och att social medier används främst för att samverka med supportrar. Enbart vid tre tidigare tillfällen sedan förbundets bildande 1922 har svenska mästare inte korats. Då har det berott på pågående världskrig och för milda vintrar när allt spel skedde utomhus. Den här gången var det pandemin till följd av spridningen av covid-19 som medförde att all ishockey på nationell nivå helt ställdes in den 15 mars. Några veckor senare ställdes de internationella världsmästerskapen också in. Ett oväntat och drastiskt slut på en säsong som innan dess kantats av så mycket positivt värt att lyfta fram.

    BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS: COACHES BIOS BRENT THOMPSON - HEAD COACH Brent Thompson is in his seventh season as head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, which also marks his ninth year in the New York Islanders organization. Thompson was originally hired to coach the Sound Tigers on June 28, 2011 and led the team to a division title in 2011-12 before being named assistant South Division coach of the Islanders for two seasons (2012-14). On May 2, 2014, the Islanders announced Thompson would return to his role as head coach of the Sound Tigers. He is 246-203-50 in 499 career regular-season games as Bridgeport's head coach. Thompson became the Sound Tigers' all-time winningest head coach on Jan. 28, 2017, passing Jack Capuano with his 134th career victory. Prior to his time in Bridgeport, Thompson served as head coach of the Alaska Aces (ECHL) for two years (2009-11), winning the Kelly Cup Championship in 2011. During his two seasons as head coach in Alaska, Thompson amassed a record of 83- 50-11 and won the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the team to a record of 47-22-3. Thompson also served as a player/coach with the CHL’s Colorado Eagles in 2003-04 and was an assistant with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen from 2005-09. Before joining the coaching ranks, Thompson enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career from 1991-2005, which included 121 NHL games and more than 900 professional contests. The Calgary, AB native was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round (39th overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

Nu gäller det närmast Frölunda i Scandinavium, regerande mästarna som MODO ännu inte förlorat mot i vinter. - Det här blir en härlig utmaning, säger coachen Harald Lückner. Läste någonstans att Frölunda förlorat fem av de senaste sex matcherna, men det är inget vi kan bry oss om. Vi har nog att fokusera på vårt. Södertälje senast? - Första perioden var spelmässigt strålande, i och för sig är det motståndet som styr en del också. Bara ett fel, vi skulle gjort flera mål. I andra ett tag var vi aningen sämre, men helhetsmässigt en riktigt bra dag på jobbet. Anthony Tuzzolino? - Kommer man in i det här skedet av säsongen i ett nytt lag går man inte in och dominerar. Han kände sig för en del, men var klart godkänd. Jag är dessutom övertygad om att han kommer att växa in rejält i elitserien vad det lider. - Det bästa med Tuzzolinos inträde i laget är dock att vi nu har fyra bra kedjor att gå runt på. Det gjorde vi konstant i Södertälje och det är väl första gången i vinter vi kunnat göra det. Ingen förlust ännu mot regerande mästarna Frölunda? - Det stämmer och vi ska förstås göra allt för att den sviten ska hålla. Straffen senast, var du lika lugn i båset som mot Timrå borta då det blev straff? - Det kan ni skriva upp. Karol Krizan sprider ett lugn kring sig som är suveränt, så är det bara.

    The Blend of Normative Uncertainty and Commercial Immaturity in Swedish Ice Hockey Re-submitted for publication in Sport in Society (February 2014). By describing and analysing normative uncertainties and the commercial immaturity in Swedish ice hockey (SHL/SIHA), this article focuses on the tension and dialectics in Swedish sport; increasingly greater commercial attempts (i.e., entrepreneurship, ‘Americanisation’, multi-arenas, innovations and public limited companies (plcs)) have to be mixed with a generally non-profit making organisation (e.g., the Swedish Sports Confederation) and its traditional values of health, democracy and youth sports and fosterage. In this respect, the elite ice hockey clubs are situated in a legal culture of two parallel norm systems: the tradition of self-regulation in sport and in civil law (e.g., commercial law). Indeed, the incoherent blend of idealism and commercialism in Swedish elite hockey appears to be fertile ground for hazardous (sports) management and indebtedness. This mix of ‘uncertainty’ and ’immaturity’ has given rise to various financial trickeries and negligence, which have subsequently developed into legal matters. Consequently, the legal system appears to have become a playground for Swedish ice hockey. This article reflects on the reasons and the rationale in this frictional development by focusing on a legal case that comes under the Business Reorganisation Act. The analysis reveals support for a ‘soft’ juridification process in Swedish ice hockey in order to handle the charging tension of the two parallel norm systems.     Playing Fast Not Loose: Evaluating team-level pace of play in ice hockey using spatio-temporal possession data David Yu*, Christopher Boucher, Luke Bornn, Mehrsan Javan SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, Quebec, Canada *Email: [email protected] 1. Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].
