This is the final PR before TuckerCon. We hope we’ve given you all the information you’ll need before the convention (or at least pointed you in the right direction). If we’ve done our job correctly, you won’t have any trouble getting to or finding your way around the con once you’re there.

As with any NASFiC, TuckerCon has gone through several challenges and changes since we won the bid, but we haven’t lost sight of our original goal – to give you the best possible convention for your money. Our programming and gaming departments are busily putting together an exhausting schedule that will rival any convention – local, regional, national, or world-level. Our masquerade and art show departments will again put on professional-class events, and all the other departments are working diligently to bring you the best experience you’ve ever had at a con.

We hope you’re looking forward to TuckerCon as much as we are. As Co-Chairs, we’re looking forward to seeing you and sharing our con (Archon) with you.

– Steve Norris, Chair / Michelle Zellich, Co-Chair

What’s Up and Where’s It At?

St. Louis Science Fiction, Ltd., hosts of just off exit 11 on I-55/I-70 (11 miles east of St. Archon, St. Louis' premier SF/Fantasy Louis/Mississippi river). convention, is hosting TuckerCon/Archon 31, the 2007 North American Science Fiction Convention For up-to-the-minute details, logon to the (9th NASFiC), since the Worldcon has been TuckerCon/Archon 31/NASFIC Homepage: awarded to a non-North American site http://www.archonstl.org/31/ (Yokohama, Japan). To allow out-of-town families to attend before Fall school sessions begin, we rescheduled the 2007 convention for a four-day weekend two months earlier than usual -- 2-5 August instead of our usual first weekend in October. This will place our St. Louis area convention a month before the Yokohama Worldcon, instead of a month after the Worldcon if we had scheduled our normal weekend. TuckerCon - The 9th [Occasional] NASFiC/Archon 31 is held at Collinsville, Illinois (St. Louis, Missouri area). Located at the Collinsville, IL Gateway Center (convention center - http://www.gatewaycenter.com/) and adjacent Holiday Inn (same location as 1993- 2006 Archons - http://www.hicollinsville.com/),

Kevin Wagner Murphy (born November 3, 1956 in River Forest, Illinois) is a United States actor and puppeteer. For eleven years he was a writer for the Peabody Award-winning comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, for nine of those years playing and operating , one of the show's puppet characters. During the final three years of the series he additionally portrayed , a talking mountain gorilla in the style of Planet of the Apes. After taking over the role of Servo, an anonymous person sent him a six-foot long banner that read "I HATE TOM SERVO'S NEW VOICE." Flattered by the enormous amount of effort taken to heckle him, Murphy hung the banner in his office for over a year.

After the end of MST3K, Murphy spent the year 2001 going to a different movie every day (including September 11) and wrote a book about this experience, entitled A Year at the Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odyssey (ISBN 0-06-093786-6). During his year at the movies, Murphy samples theaters from small-town boxes to urban megaplexes, attempts (and rejects) a theater food diet, suffers a kidney stone, visits both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals, sneaks Thanksgiving dinner into a showing of Monsters, Inc., and records all of these experiences, both good and bad. His feat — viewing 360+ films on four continents — was mentioned in Ripley's Believe It or Not.

Murphy holds a B.A. in Journalism and an M.A. in Directing for the Stage and Screen, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Murphy lives in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area with his wife, Jane.

Starting in 2006, Murphy has joined Michael J. Nelson on several audio commentaries for Nelson's service.

Our previously-announced Guest, actress Mira Furlan, has accepted a part in a new television series her husband is producing in Belgrade, and will not be able to attend Archon 31. "A Short Note About A Big Phan: Roger Tener, Toastmaster" There are words for Roger Tener, and many of them are unprintable. Not because they aren't suitable for polite discussion, but because they're too big to fit on the printed page. Despite these drawbacks, they are dwarfed by the man himself. Roger Tener is larger than life. In many respects, not the least of which is 'literally' ... none less than Kermit Eller, the man who toured the US as Darth Vader in the 1970s for LucasFilm, commented repeatedly, "You're the biggest S.O.B. I've ever seen!" Kermit contacted George and suggested that they hire Roger to spell him on the tours, but the plan fell through when it turned out that Roger was too big to fit into the Darth Vader outfit. (!!) And like Sir Arthur Clarke's monolith, to think that his huge stature ends in only our four perceptible dimensions is naive and shortsighted. Bio and Art by William R. Warren, Jr. First and foremost, he is a huge phan. A SMOF, whether he recognizes it or not. He has had the likes of Ted and Jayne Sturgeon and the aforementioned Kermit Eller as houseguests, to say nothing of his long-term friendship with Wilson Tucker and his wife Fern. Roger is the founder of "The Chronicles Of The Dawn Patrol", a weekdaily newsletter for aviation and skiffy enthusiasts, fan and pro. He attracts smart people, they recognize his professionalism and humor and influence. He's a fixture in Midwest Phandom, and there is little that is not within his range of travel. He's a pilot par excellence, and ranges far and wide in his precious friend, 52-Tango. He personally worked on Superman's airplane (yes, he did!) and is on a first-name basis with the likes of General Chuck Yeager. I'm namedropping for him because he's bigger than that. Secondly, he is a core-value-huge family man. His delightful wife Cathy and his sons (all of whom are larger than life as well) are foundations of American qualities we all admire. Cathy is a Registered Nurse, Roger is a recently-retired EMT, and their boys are heroes serving (or having served) proudly in military service. His mom and dad were stolid and beautiful people, as is his brother ... they were very influential in my own life, and I was only an occasional visitor. Living with these people rubbed off on Roger, and he is repaying those qualities in spades. Finest kind, Hawkeye ! (tweet-TWEET-tweet) There are no wimps in the Tener household. Even the cats have attitude. Tornados know better than to mess with them. Thirdly, he is a true friend, if you're ever lucky enough to understand what that can mean. I didn't say, "What it DOES mean", I said "What it CAN mean" ... for Roger takes friendship seriously, and you can ask for none better in your life. This is your opportunity to find out exactly how valuable he can be in your life, if you don't already know. He'll be easy enough to spot at Tuckercon, just look for a crowd of people having fun gathered around someone towering over their heads and shoulders, that will be "Pinky" Tener. Quick-witted, keen (in every sense of the word) and humble to a fault, he doesn't know how influential he really is on the world around him. Personally, I think it's just gravity ... for all you astrology types out there, let me assure you, Roger Tener had more influence on you at your birth than Venus or Mars. Allow yourself to gravitate toward the man ... he doesn't bite unless invited, and Cathy is there to keep him in line. And Roger, your own line back at ya ... "You're a steely-eyed missile man."
