Toledo2 1 Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management, University of California, Berkeley, USA 2 Centro de Investigaciones en Ecosistemas, Universidad Nacional Autònoma de Mèxico Abstract: Although risk and uncertainty dominate the lives of most rural inhabitants of the semi-arid regions of the world, many farmers have been able to develop durable farming systems through the use of innovative soil and water management systems and the use of locally adapted crop species and varieties. In this paper we provide examples of farming systems developed by traditional farmers well adapted to the local conditions of the semi-arid environment, enabling farmers to generate sustained yields meeting their subsistence needs, despite harsh conditions and low use of external inputs. Part of this performance is linked to the ingenious soil and water conservation systems but also to the high levels of agrobiodiversity exhibited by traditional agroecosystems, which in turn positively influences agroecosystem function. We also give examples of projects aimed at assisting rainfed resource-poor farmers in the development of a variety of practical techniques and strategies to enhance production and resiliency in the midst of resource constraints typical of semi-arid environments. Scaling up Agroecology to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
SCALING UP AGROECOLOGY TO ACHIEVE THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS 2ND FAO INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON AGROECOLOGY By Kim Assaël From 3 to 5 April 2018 FAO has hosted the 2nd International Symposium on Agroecology: Scaling-up Agroecology to achieve the (SDGs). Building on the first Symposium and the subsequent regional workshops, the Symposium on Agroecology focused the transition of Agroecology from dialogue to action, by sharing ideas and experiences, while discussing policies and actions that can support agroecology in achieving the SDGs and accompany the decade of Family Farming (2019-2028) and the Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025). About 400 participants were attended, from policy- makers and governments, agroecology practitioners and civil society representatives, to members from academia and research, the private sector and representatives from the regional meetings. Even with it almost 700 were the effective participants and plenary rooms have been changed at the last minute to make space to all participants. Key elements and actions to support scaling up agroecology have been intensively discussed as the multiple benefits of agroecology are an important path for meeting the 2030 Agenda objectives and addressing the interlinked challenges. The key facts underpinning the big advantages of agroecology are summarized in the FAO website: Agroecology relies on ecosystem services to improve productivity. The knowledge and practices of farmers and food producers from all over the world are at the core of agroecology. Agroecology can address the root causes of hunger, poverty and inequality. Agroecology combines farmers’ knowledge with modern science in innovative ways. Agroecology provides local solutions for global challenges. -

52 Best Practices on Agroecology: Permaculture/Agroecology system in Timor-Leste Permaculture/Agroecology system in Timor-Leste National School Curriculum for Basic Education Introduction Timor-Leste is a half Island country with a total population of 1.2 million people; it is geographically situated between Asia and the Pacific region. It is a tropical country and 80 per cent of its population live in rural areas. Agriculture, fishery and forestry are the main economical mainstays. Figure 1. Students working in the garden during school garden classes (photo: Ego Lemos) In 2013, the Ministry of Education of Timor-Leste decided to reform its national curriculum for Basic Education from grade one to six. Permaculture/Agroecology school gardens had been part of the discipline of Arts and Culture. The organization behind this movement of Permaculture/Agroecology is Permatil (Permaculture Timor-Leste), which was established in 2002. This school garden program now became part of formal education of Timor-Leste. 1415 schools have been targeted to introduce school gardens across the territory of Timor-Leste. The main reason for introducing school gardens is to help teachers and students learn how to grow a variety of seasonal food crops that can contribute to the school feeding program, shifting from passive learning inside classrooms into activities outside the classroom, while providing beauty to the school landscaping. School students and communities learn how to copy the model into their home garden to improve health and nutrition of the wider family. Description of the Agroecology system The Permaculture/agroecological system is a system that increases the production of agriculture without harming nature; it is culturally appropriate and makes communities more resilient to climate change. -

Historically it has been viewed as a problem primarily of urban areas to be solved by the outmoded engineering practice of "pave it and pipe it." This method fails to properly manage stormwater in the uplands, leading to disastrous consequences: large, powerful volumes of water moving too fast, resulting in severe erosion and flooding in low-lying areas. -

NATURE AND NURTURE FARM DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT PLAN Jared Aslakson Yihan Li Michael Lordon Alexandria Peters A project submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degrees of Master of Science and Master of Landscape Architecture University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment April 2017 Faculty Advisors: Jennifer Blesh Stanton Jones ABSTRACT This master’s project intends to explore the design process and management of restoration agriculture in Southeast Michigan. Our client, Nature and Nurture LLC. is a multi-faceted business owned and operated by Mike Levine and Erica Kempter. Between the two of them, they provide organic landscaping services, teach classes, sell organic, locally-adapted seeds, fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms to restaurants and stores throughout Southeast Michigan. The Levine and Kempter extended family has recently acquired 120 acres of property in Scio Township, near Dexter, Michigan. Much of the property has been conventionally farmed for 50 or more years, while other portions of the property are high- quality woodland and wetland. Ultimately, our clients would like to derive their income primarily from the farm. Moreover, they are committed to ecologically responsible farming and are interested in using organic practices, restoration agriculture, and agroecological techniques throughout the property. To that end, our role was to create a site plan that: does not damage the existing high-quality ecosystems on the site, is able to increase the quality of the soils in the conventionally farmed areas (metrics for quality include but are not limited to: soil organic matter, amount of organic nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium), and is able to increase the site’s overall habitat quality.
