But it lacked in some ways like going in depth regarding the missions, soldiers and the surrounding atmosphere involving the war. It was a new side if ww2 that is not talked about much. I thought at first that this book would be just an historical account Of particular note was Anderson Larsen:- An Having just finished a lengthy biography of Winston Churchill and recognised his importance during the Second World War I felt drawn to read this book about those soldiers who did so much in what was Special Services. As a lover of history I had a bit of knowledge of him and in this book learned so much more about him. The book focussed a great deal on all of his missions and I was so gripped by his courage and bravery particularly in all he did in Crete and the other occupied islands. The book does not hold back on what he and his soldiers had to do and on how vicious and ruthless the Nazis were. Unbelievable but true story of 24yo Anders Lassen, who died a hero, fighting Nazis in Italy. Inspiring, funny, dramatic It's just incredible the sacrifices these young men made to defeat Nazis, especially when we compare their acts of courage to the alt-right cowards tearing up their own country today, instigated by the coward-in- chief. Set much of the time in Greece during the German occupation, the hero of the story, Anders Lassen, should be much better known as such for his great courage, fearlessness and sacrifice as part of the resistance outside his native Denmark. The only non-Commonwealth recipient of the British Victoria Cross during World War II, post-humously at the age of 24, there's a memorial statue of him in Cop Excellent book, reads like an adventure story but so much more nail-biting when you realize it's true. It's I don't read military history that often, but the title of this book was too good to pass Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII, and let's face it, the shenanigans of unconventional units during World War II remain irresistible even some seventy years later. It's not entirely clear, but this unit functioned kind of like the Special Boat Service, as far as I can tell not being well-versed in all the intricacies of the various units. In any event, this history is pegged to a larger-than-life soldier who was in at the formation of the first unit, present for its greatest triumphs, and was killed in action near the end of the war. Through him, the reader is taken through the first mission at Fernando Po aka Bioko off the coast of present-day Cameroon, then some dirty work in the Channel Islands, before moving to a wide range of raids across the Greek islands including a particularly spectacular airfield raid in Creteand then finally a calamitous mission as part of the Allied push up Italy. The considerable focus on Anders Lassen, appropriately nicknamed The Viking, makes the book read almost like one of Plutarch's Lives : history told through the actions of a great man. And his brothers in arms, each a hero in their own right. Anders Lassen was part of Ian Fleming's inspiration for James Bond: the hard-drinking, womanising daredevil killer - this story is even better than any thriller, though, because every bit of it is true. Lewis knows how to portion out his hints, so that when the SBS raiders land in Italy in Januaryyou follow them with a sense of foreboding that I assume would be present even if you didn't know when and where Anders Lassen died.
