So Britain's wartime leader called for the lightning development of a completely new kind of warfare, recruiting a band of eccentric free-thinking warriors to become the first 'deniable' secret operatives to strike behind enemy lines, offering these volunteers nothing but the potential for glory and all-but-certain death. Churchill's Secret Warriors tells the story of the daring victories for this small force of 'freelance pirates', undertaking devastatingly effective missions against the Nazis, often dressed in enemy uniforms and with enemy kit, breaking all previously held rules of warfare. Master storyteller Damien Lewis brings the adventures of the secret unit to life, weaving together the stories of the soldiers' brotherhood in this compelling narrative, from the unit's earliest missions to the death of their leader just weeks before the end of the war. But it lacked in some ways like going in depth regarding the missions, soldiers and the surrounding atmosphere involving the war. It was a new side if ww2 that is not talked about much. I was very intrigued to find more about these soldiers who in their own way an 3. I was very intrigued to find more about these soldiers who in their own way and according to their own rules, waged a war against the enemy that largely contributed to the war effort. Jan 21, James rated it it was amazing. Engaging, exciting, educational. Reads like a novel but it is amazing because it is true. Great way to fill in your knowledge and understanding of WWII. Jun 19, Mr Allan Goldie rated it it was amazing Shelves: history. Having just finished a lengthy biography of Winston Churchill and recognised his importance during the Second World War I felt drawn to read Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII book about those soldiers who did so much in what was Special Services. I thought at first that this book would be just an historical account Of particular note was Anderson Larsen:- An Having just finished a lengthy biography of Winston Churchill and recognised his importance during the Second World War I felt drawn to read this book about those soldiers who did so much in what was Special Services. As a lover of history I had a bit of knowledge of him and in this book learned so much more about him. The book focussed a great deal on all of his missions and I was so gripped by his courage and bravery particularly in all he did in Crete and the other occupied islands. The book does not hold back on what he and his soldiers had to do and on how vicious and ruthless the Nazis were. The book ends sadly just as the war in Europe was concluding with the death of Anders Larsen A great book to read. Jun 17, Ian Perry rated it really liked it. This book achieved both, I am in awe of the achievements of these men. Their sacrifice was huge, those who survived lived with tortuous memories. Aug 29, Barbara rated it it was amazing Shelves: own-it. Picked this up in London at Churchill's War Rooms. Unbelievable but true story of 24yo Anders Lassen, who died a hero, fighting Nazis in . Inspiring, funny, dramatic It's just incredible the sacrifices these young men made to defeat Nazis, especially when we compare their acts of courage to the alt-right cowards tearing up their own country today, instigated by the coward-in- chief. Oct 22, Noel rated it it was amazing Shelves: wwii. Exploding from the first page, onward, this tome leaves nothing wanting to those looking for an adrenaline- fueled gallop through war-torn Europe. The vivid descriptions of the individual clandestine actions taken upon harbors, small island outposts, and Nazi strongholds, provides for a breathtakingly good accounting of each soldier's achievements. This is a must "read, or at least listen-to,"as far as I'm concerned. Apr 21, Liam Wakefield rated it really liked it. Absolutely amazing! What started out to be just another good book on WWII, turned out to be a brilliant account of Andres Lassons magnificent wartime exploits! The deeds of these men of the Raider company were truly amazing and something that the world should know about. Oct 07, Angel Serrano rated it really liked it Shelves: history-of-europe. Ha nacido el SAS. Lassen seemingly set the standard for all those Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII came after him. Jan 14, Jon Eggins rated it it was amazing. A detailed and well researched portrayal of a stunningly breathtaking team and equally breathtaking feats. Highly, highly recommended. May 25, Hugh Harkin rated it really liked it. Book was really good showing how these men managed to do quick in and out raids on airfield in and around the Mediterranean. Dec 15, Gavin Moore rated it it was amazing. Must read for anyone interested special forces operations in WW2. A gripping educational account of incredible courage and daring. A true story not to be missed. Nov 09, Vinayak Malik rated it really liked it. Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII in all the missions. Jun 01, Tania Kollias rated it it was amazing. Excellent book, reads like an adventure story but so much more nail-biting when you realize it's true. Set much of the time in during the German occupation, the hero of the story, Anders Lassen, should be much better known as such for his great courage, fearlessness and sacrifice as part of the resistance outside his native . The only non-Commonwealth recipient of the British during World War II, post-humously at the age of 24, there's a memorial statue of him in Cop Excellent book, reads like an adventure story but so much more nail-biting when you realize it's true. I don't read military history that often, but the title of this book was too good to pass up, and let's face it, the shenanigans of unconventional units during World War II remain irresistible even some seventy years later. Like a lot of popular military history, the action described is fascinating and Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII writing is not the best. This is the story of how British created a "deniable" special force under the Special Operations Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII to run the equivalent of black ops during World War II. It's I don't read military history that often, but the title of this book was too good to pass Churchills Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII, and let's face it, the shenanigans of unconventional units during World War II remain irresistible even some seventy years later. It's not entirely clear, but this unit functioned kind of like the , as far as I can tell not being well-versed in all the intricacies of the various units. In any event, this history is pegged to a larger-than-life soldier who was in at the formation of the first unit, present for its greatest triumphs, and was killed in action near the end of the war. Through him, the reader is taken through the first mission at Fernando Po aka Bioko off the coast of present-day Cameroon, then some dirty work in the Channel Islands, before moving to a wide range of raids across the Greek islands including a particularly spectacular airfield raid in Creteand then finally a calamitous mission as part of the Allied push up Italy. A true story well told, with real live action heroes. The considerable focus on Anders Lassen, appropriately nicknamed The Viking, makes the book read almost like one of Plutarch's Lives : history told through the actions of a great man. And his brothers in arms, each a hero in their own right. Anders Lassen was part of Ian Fleming's inspiration for James Bond: the hard-drinking, womanising daredevil killer - this story is even better than any thriller, though, because every bit of it is true. Le A true story well told, with real live action heroes. Lewis knows how to portion out his hints, so that when the SBS raiders land in Italy in Januaryyou follow them with a sense of foreboding that I assume would be present even if you didn't know when and where Anders Lassen died. One thing, though, at the very end of the book, jarred on me: the verse inscribed on Lassen's grave is in part mistranslated. The pages of 'Bee' and 'Vee'
