  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

  • Althorp.Com Theodorealexander.Com FOREWORD
spencerofalthorp.com theodorealexander.com FOREWORD The histories of the Spencer Family’s Heritage and Althorp are so tightly entwined that they would be impossible to unravel and separate. All the Spencers’ favourite possessions, which have cascaded down the generations, have ended up in Althorp, this most English of houses, just an hour north of London. Enter its 550- acre park, and you find yourself in a peaceful setting that radiates timeless good taste, with its swathes of fine English oaks stretching out in every direction, while the family’s rare herd of black fallow deer graze beneath. It’s a scene familiar to each of the 19 generations of Spencers who have known and loved this corner of England. When Columbus was sailing towards America, my family were farming here. When Britain was defying Hitler, it was a Spencer cousin who helped lead the way – our wartime prime minister’s full family name was Spencer-Churchill, though everyone shortens him to Winston Churchill. All through history, during the past five centuries or more, it seems you will find a Spencer there or thereabouts, making their mark, doing their best. These Spencer ancestors were able to indulge their tastes – to commission art, furniture, and all the finer things in life. You can see the Spencer touch in every corner of Althorp – this historic house that my family CONTENTS has called “home” for over 500 years, and which for the past decade, has been given unprecedented care and attention. A massive programme of restoration and repair has taken place, which our partnership with Theodore Alexander has certainly helped.

  • Holywell House: a Gothic Villa at St Albans
HOLYWELL HOUSE: A GOTHIC VILLA AT ST ALBANS FRANCES HARRIS HoLYWELL HOUSE, when the Dowager Lady Spencer first came to live there in November 1783, was a small and rather run-down country house on the southern edge of St Albans: one of many properties inherited by John Spencer of Althorp at the death of his redoubtable and fabulously wealthy grandmother, Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough. In 1746 it passed to his son, who became the ist Earl Spencer, and although in the latter's lifetime it was regarded by the family as no more than a convenient staging-post on the road to Northamptonshire/ at his death in 1783 his widow, Georgiana, fixed upon it as her dower house. The Spencers' three great houses, Althorp, Wimbledon Park, and Spencer House in St James's, now belonged to her son and daughter-in-law, and she was in any case unwilling to settle anywhere that would recall memories of her own happy married life. The house as Lady Spencer found it when she first moved in was virtually unchanged since the late seventeenth century: the product of a somewhat makeshift renovation carried out by the future Duke and Duchess of Marlborough shortly after they had acquired the property from the latter's family in 1684. It consisted of a tall, narrow, north- facing block with a hipped roof and pediment, almost certainly the work of William Talman, who had still to attain fame as the architect of Chatsworth. At right angles to it, and facing east across the extensive gardens, was a much older two-storied wing, with an open colonnade or cloister on the ground fioor and above it a low-ceilinged gallery with a further set of rooms at the soutb end.

  • The Sir George Scharf Sketchbooks 2
The Sir George Scharf Sketchbooks 2. Introduction to SSB 43 (14 June–20 October 1856) by Philip Cottrell, University College Dublin NB. All page references are to SSB 43 and catalogue numbers refer to items from the Art Treasures Exhibition’s Gallery of Ancient Masters unless otherwise specified. Scharf Sketchbook 43 covers the period from mid-June to late October 1856. Around forty Art Treasures items are represented, in addition to dozens of other miscellaneous works of art. As with most of the sketchbooks, Scharf assembled its content in a reasonably regular and chronological manner, although some pages have been removed, a couple have been left blank (pp. 134-135), and there are a few gaps in its compilation. These include an unusually long seven-week hiatus which lasted from early August to the end of September which coincided with a convulsive turn of events in Scharf’s personal and professional life. Not least of these was his appointment, at the age of thirty-five, as Art Secretary to the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition on 8 August. The first two thirds of SSB 43, up to page 86, predate this crucial moment, and are largely devoted to a visit to Cambridge between Saturday 28 June and Wednesday 2 July followed by a two-week tour of Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders which began on 21 July.1 The sketchbook then picks up again in late September, at which point Scharf’s new duties had entailed his removal from London to lodgings in Manchester, and thus began the first of Scharf’s several lengthy stints in the city, often of several weeks’ duration.
