SHABBAT SERVICES

PARASHAH

In this week's parashah, after the sin of Baal-Peor, G-d announced that because Pinhas had displayed his passion for G-d, G-d granted Pinhas G-d's covenant of peace and priesthood for all time. G-d then told Moses to attack the Midianites to repay them for their trickery luring Israelite men to worship Baal-Peor. G-d instructed Moses and Eleazar to take a census of Israelite men 20 years old and up, and Moses and Eleazar ordered it done. The census finds 601,730 men between the ages of 20 and 60. G-d instructed Moses on how the Land is to be divided by lottery among the tribes and families of Israel. The Levi'im men aged a month old and up amounted to 23,000, and they were not included in the regular enrollment of Israelites, as they were not to have land assigned to them. The only persons whom Moses and Eleazar counted that were counted in the first census at the wilderness of Sinai, were Caleb and Joshua.

The daughters of Zelophehad approached Moses, Eleazar, the chieftains, and the assembly at the entrance of the Tabernacle, saying that their father left no sons, and asking that they be given a land holding. Moses brought their case before G-d, who told him that their plea was just and instructed him to transfer their father's share of land to them. G-d further instructed that if a man died without leaving a son, the property was to transfer to his daughter, or failing a daughter to his brothers, or failing a brother to his father's brothers, or failing brothers of his father to the nearest relative. G-d told Moses to climb the heights of Abarim and view the Land of Israel, saying that when he had seen it, he would die, because he disobeyed G-d's command to uphold G-d's sanctity in the people's sight when he brought water from the rock in the wilderness of Zin. Moses asked G-d to appoint someone over the community, so that the people would not be like sheep without a shepherd. G-d told Moses to single out Joshua, lay his hand on him, and commission him before Eleazar and the whole community. Joshua was to present himself to Eleazar the priest, who was to seek the decision of the Urim and Thummim on whether to go out or come in. The parashah ends with a listing of all the offerings for regular days, the Shabbat, Rosh Hodesh, Passover, Shabuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shemini Hag'Atzeret. Parashah Pinhas has 168 verses Haftarah Pinhas has 22 verses Sefer HaHinukh has 6 Mitzvot

FROM THE RABBI

By Rabbi Albert Gabbai

Minhag:

To Mrs. Bobby Freedman for her donations

of the flowers on our Shabbat tables this week.

The custom of calling a Cohen to the Torah first, followed by a Levi, is spread all over the Jewish communities.

To Caralyn and David Vessal for sponsoring

the Kiddush in memory of beloved husband,

father and grandfather, Mr. Joseph Vessal.

According to the Sephardic tradition, if a Cohen is not present, a Levite does not take his place because once the
Cohen is not called, "the order became disturbed" (Nitkalkel HaSeder).

If there are no Levites, then the same Cohen is called the second time and not another Cohen. This is done so that no one in the community would cast aspersions on the Cohen saying, "There must have been a blemish on this one, that is why they called another one."

To Mrs. Farah Vessal for dedicating the lunch

on Shabbat in memory of beloved husband,

father and grandfather, Mr. Joseph Vessal.

MAZAL TOB!

To Dr. Brian Englander on being named

Chair of the Department of Radiology at Pennsylvania Hospital.

In addition, if needed, on Shabbat we can call a Cohen or a Levite

MARK WOLFSON’S

MIKVEH ISRAEL BLOG

Mr. Mark Wolfson has started an interesting blog called Mikveh Israel History. In it he explores the people and events in the history of Congregation Mikveh Israel. You can see it at:

Did you know that you can double or even triple your donations to Congregation Mikveh Israel?! Many employers sponsor matching gift programs that match charitable contributions made by their employees. Some companies may even match gifts made by retirees, spouses, and board members. Speak with a representative at your company and see if religious organizations are eligible to receive matching gift funds. If your gift is eligible, simply request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it, completed and signed, along with your donation to Congregation Mikveh Israel.
